Title: Ordinary Day - Part 2
Post by: Perry on January 16, 2014, 02:44:50 pm
So now you have this.

(https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi664.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv1%2FPerryBee%2FBuildingdeeps003_zps3f417a6d.jpg&hash=125b3db1ef6da1514e812bccbc8b9a244e0b4ed6) (http://s664.photobucket.com/user/PerryBee/media/Buildingdeeps003_zps3f417a6d.jpg.html)

From here, all you really need is some quality glue, a drill with a countersink bit, a second drill/driver for your screws, and maybe a clamp for any cupped wood.

(https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi664.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv1%2FPerryBee%2FBuildingdeeps012_zps420ed8ef.jpg&hash=c8e48e872833a15e504f18e4b21475c108c0ba28) (http://s664.photobucket.com/user/PerryBee/media/Buildingdeeps012_zps420ed8ef.jpg.html)

My son's Rabbit, Thorin! Remember him!

(https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi664.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv1%2FPerryBee%2FBuildingdeeps004_zps352b29de.jpg&hash=f19ab13b49658c8a86c9b995ee40f4d9e38a48ec) (http://s664.photobucket.com/user/PerryBee/media/Buildingdeeps004_zps352b29de.jpg.html)

Put your pieces together with glue, pre drill all your holes and simply screw them together! Easy!

Be careful and observant when doing all this!
Remember this little runt?

Here's what happens when you're not watching! Custom wooden ware!  :D

(https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi664.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv1%2FPerryBee%2FBuildingdeeps017_zps130ef099.jpg&hash=fff2680ef66b020961faf717087d31744e613130) (http://s664.photobucket.com/user/PerryBee/media/Buildingdeeps017_zps130ef099.jpg.html)

Here's some of the work. Once I have them all done I will set my hand hold jig up and put hand holds in all of them. Then prime!

I love seeing pictures of freshly cut wood.  They activate my mind's nose and I fill my lungs with that delicious smell.
All the more when they're pictures of such nicely cut and beautifully assembled sections.
As they say in jolly old England "Carry on."

I hear that! When we were first married my hubby worked in a lumber mill. His work clothes were my favorite to sort thru  :)

Actually I just discovered that the little runt also chewed through the flex line on the hose from my air compressor. He has the rubber chewed off it in about a half dozen places. The webbing inside is intact so I think it will still work, but I'm not impressed. Guess I'll find out the moment I turn on the valve and charge the line with air. :o

When my wife was a kindergarten teacher she once brought home a large rabbit for the Christmas Holidays.  The dang thing ate up several of our house hold extension cords, lamps and such.  I'm not big on eating rabbit, but there comes a time when it could sound good.  As stated above, anything chicken fried with gravy is a good breakfast.

In the oil patch, we have long ago discovered that field rats and mice like to eat the insulation on wiring.  When a rig is stacked in a field, the workers go around and place open bottles of ammonia near the critical wiring.  Rats and mice will not hang around ammonia.

By the time I am finished I will have about six extra hives for myself, and six sitting in the back of the shop to sell, OR use myself if I have a boom of a year with swarms and cut outs.
NO BUNNYS were harmed in the...   no, not true, I ate the bunny.   :-[

Finished routering and painting the boxes today.

Nice work Scott!  ;) 8)

Hubby, and our friend, and I, are starting production of 4 mediums this week. Our friend is old school and very resistant to 'change.' He looks at me out of the corner of his squinted eyes, slightly shaking his head, "Why in the world would you want to change from a deep to mediums?" I tried to explain the lifting thing as I get older. "Why would you ever need to lift them?"

I told him firmly to shut up and get to work, there is a steak dinner in it for him. They have been our friends for over 30 years, we have seen our families go thru lots of stuff. His squinting subsided just a bit, so I added a homemade blackberry pie. He's now on the project with rock music in the background. Food always works with men!

Save those few deep bodies, they work great with medium frames for swarm traps.

I got all my nucs assembled, painted, and frames assembled. I've been fortunate that I've been allowed to use the heated shop at work for the assembling and painting. I have room to spread out and can get all the painting done well in advance of spring.  These are all part of my overwinter nucs like what Michael Palmer uses and Betterbee sells.  The divided bottom boxes are getting made with the rest of the 10-frame equipment. It's almost all cut to length and ready for cutting box joints and frame rest rabbets.

(https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs27.postimg.cc%2Fd5clzkrcv%2Fnucs.jpg&hash=b2ea0feb22ac33ee6e7dd46884608591bebf41ef) (http://postimg.cc/image/d5clzkrcv/)

Went to Lowe's to get 1X12s to make deep hive bodies out of and they had a cull pack of 1X8 and 1X10 and a few odd 1X6 and a 1X4. Most was pretty decent looking and for 30% of sticker price I couldn't pass on it. I had to put it all on my roof rack since mama had the van and I desperately need a truck or at least a trailer.
(https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs9.postimg.cc%2Fg4rr5l56z%2Flumber_roof.jpg&hash=d44d8becd73687621e0048d8608267a8bf160fdc) (http://postimg.cc/image/g4rr5l56z/)

Pretty sure I exceeded the safe loading limits of the rack, the load bars were bowed pretty good but didn't yield so we're good. All back to normal.

(https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs10.postimg.cc%2Femt2dq5qt%2Fload_bar.jpg&hash=0c1d7d34beb280ec840acaa69f99209135c76413) (http://postimg.cc/image/emt2dq5qt/)

Everything cut to length. Didn't have much scrap considering it was all cull lumber. The Carr Siding is the only tongue and groove material I can find around here, most of it is smooth on the backside some has the v-grooves at the joint. It'll work fine for bottom boards and maybe even some telescoping tops with aluminum flashing over the top.

I'm starting to think I got in over my head looking at the boxes containing the 900 frames I need to assemble.....

I do plan on selling up to 8 new, complete hives to help defray cost of my materials but there is still the time commitment. I was able to assemble 200 frames yesterday, got a ways to go yet.

I got one of the Robo jigs to do 10 at a time. Friend of mine built one that held 20 but said it was bulky and hard to use so he cut it down.

I used to use a pair of the 10 framers from Rob's design also.
Work on one while other is drying.

Car siding works great for bottom boards. I have also used plain pine boards slid into the grooved side boards and glued the edges together. That also works quite well.
My frame assembly jig is a little backwards...  Hadn't seen one in use when I built it, but it works pretty well and does thirteen frames at a time...   why 13??  because I had boards that long  ;D
