‘Like it’s been nuked’: Millions of bees dead after South Carolina sprays for Zika mosquitoes
On Sunday morning, the South Carolina honey bees began to die in massive numbers.
Death came suddenly to Dorchester County, S.C. Stressed insects tried to flee their nests, only to surrender in little clumps at hive entrances. The dead worker bees littering the farms suggested that colony collapse disorder was not the culprit — in that odd phenomenon, workers vanish as though raptured, leaving a living queen and young bees behind.
Instead, the dead heaps signaled the killer was less mysterious, but no less devastating. The pattern matched acute pesticide poisoning. By one estimate, at a single apiary — Flowertown Bee Farm and Supply, in Summerville — 46 hives died on the spot, totaling about 2.5 million bees.

Ok, last winter I read an article where a bunch of Brazilian doctors said the cause of the microencephaly was not the mosquitoes, but a larvacide in the water supply. I did not buy into the zika causing microencephaly instantly and still don't. There is too much money to be made fighting zika, and by our old friends in the pesticide industry. But I quit posting links to that article because I really don't know and can't verify. I can't verify this one either. But something is smelling pretty rotten in the whole deal. And I don't blame the president. Although South Dakota's officials that okd that morning spray run need to be fired without unemployment, minimal. #CDC This article is all over several forums.
This just turned up in my news feed. I have read but cannot verify.

Oh my!
The new war on Zika reminds me of California's war on the fruit fly back in the late 80's or early 90's. They sprayed Malathion by helicopter all over California.
Shortly after, they had the Rodney King violence. I was in grad school and focusing on neuropsychology at the time. I had read how organophosphates can trigger predatory responses in pets. Folk were using the chemical to treat for ticks and fleas. I wondered if there was a connection between the population of California getting hit with sub-lethal doses in the general population and the outbreak of rioting. The Malathion becoming a piece of the puzzle that put the rioters at risk for aggression.

I did not know that about malathion. I learn something daily.

I was not aware of this either. When it was still available I used it on my hogs for swine lice and my hounds for ticks. Didn't notice any increase in aggression but it was only once or twice a year. I believe you have a compelling hypothesis and it would be great if someone would take it up for study.
Just anyone but the chemical companies.

I just got jumped all over by a guy in my local group (the master gardener working on being a master beekeeper) who thinks it was all the beekeeper's fault for not covering their hives.
ABC news reported on a case of Guillain-Barre that was supposedly caused by zika virus, so he wants to see us all out there covering our hives for airborne spraying and lots of it. as far as I know put all women on birth control for a year and let the junk run its course. So far there is only one case of G-B and it MIGHT have been caused by zika but there are other causes
I chatted with a friend in a rural area. Trying to keep the hives here for the rest of the year, get her some wildflower seed and clover seed soon, and the hives move out in early spring. Might keep one here, kind of as an observation hive (but NOT in the house)

Talk about using a sledgehammer when all that is needed is a fly swatter.
As usual, overreaction on the government's part. I remember when the prison I worked in had the first case of AIDS and how panicked everyone was. Then common sense finally prevailed. Common sense was certainly lacking here.
I feel so sad for that beekeeper. I was heartbroken just losing two hives. He must be devastated!😥
