Where do you get your fondant to top your hive up for the winter? (If you go that way). Thanks!

Perry has a fondant source nailed down, but I haven't been able to find it available in my area. I'm just making sugar cakes for the few hives I'm watching closely. I can't find Perry's post with a picture of the fondant label and the name of his supplier.

maybe this will help

I'm in Nova Scotia also and checked out Perry's source for the fondant a couple of years ago but it is much cheaper to make sugar cakes for my five hives. It would take forever to use up 50 lbs of fondant and I would imagine there is a shelf life on it.
5 lbs sugar
1/4 - 1/2 cup water
mix up in my wife's mix master
press into two 8" cake pans (dollar store)
175 degrees in the oven for 4 hours presto your done
5 lbs of sugar makes two sugar cakes. I place one on each hive when I wrap them for a little bit of security of the winter.

What 40 Acre said.. I use 50 lb bags of sugar and heat them at 200 degrees for about two hours and let them cool off over night before popping them out, but same principle and idea.
I have considered fondant, but have yet to find any that is cheaper than 50lb bags of sugar from Hy-Vee. i am sure it would be less work, but it gives me a reason to drink Rum and Coke and stare at the oven for two hours at a time!!

BMS Distributors is where I use to get my fondant, but after the price jump 2 years ago (from $50 for 50 lbs to $73 for 50 lbs) :o
I switched to a new place that just opened its doors in Truro, Golden Green Sustainable Resources. They now sell a purpose bee fondant called Ambrosia, $29.50 for 15 kilos (33 lbs). I just picked up 7 cases for my nucs and any light hives.

Cool, I'll have to check them out and thanks to everyone for your responses!
