The city fire dept. uses the little lake next to my house to train. In winter, if there is sufficient ice, all the different stations meet and practice ice rescue. In the summer, they practice using a truck that pumps the water out of the lake to fight a fire, which is useful in rural situations.

Today was training day. My heart always leaps to my throat when I see the fire fighter playing the victim in that cold water.

Firemen have always been the unsung heroes in my mind. Our local fire dept. is made up of one paid fire chief. The others are volunteer firemen that go through all sorts of training, (fire, rescue from floods and car wrecks, first responder to health issues and other things). I am impressed with them, and being too old to assist them with my old body, I do readily assist them when the pass the plate.

My son is in the local Fire Dept. Proud of him.
He has done further training and is part of the water (boat) incident team.
Is the volunteer showing the "feet first" attitude for being carried downstream ?

I didn't know this forum had so many members with fire dept. connections.
The volunteer is bobbing in a hole cut in the ice. It's a lake and I am told, at it's deepest it's around 10ft. deep. The rescuers are practicing distributing their body weight and how to safely pull the victim from the water.
The lake is man made and was originally part of the cities water supply. One of the city's water plants is just down the street. That is nice during winter storms. The city makes sure there is access to the water plant and you have to go past my house to get to the plant.
Several years ago, in the summer, we woke up to a light show from dozens of emergency vehicles. A man fell into the lake and was crying for help. Miraculously a neighbor heard the cries and called 911. I never did hear why the man was out there in the middle of the night, why he was in the water, or why he couldn't save himself. I watched the fire department water rescue for a while. When I observed a fireman throw his gear into the back of a boat and hang his head, I knew the out come.

With the exception of the cities, I believe most firefighting here in NS is done mostly by volunteers. If you are a member you qualify for free auto registration and a couple of other small benefits, but clearly, you have to want to do it.

i am a former fire investigator, i went through all the training that firefighters are required to do to pass and obtain my degree except for water training and the aerial ladder (don't think i would have ever passed that test). i did do the dragging of equipment up and down flights of stairs and a 250 pound dummy down three or four flights of stairs and all sorts of other stuff.
firefighters; guys and gals go through some exceptional, intensive training.
we also have a small lake near us in the city where our local fire department trains and practices for water rescues/emergencies. when i know they are training, i like to watch them train. very educational. in our rural res, if someone has an old barn or some structure we can contact the fire department and burn it down for training purposes.

I grew up near a small Kansas town. The Mom and Pop grocery store was owned by one of the volunteer firemen. It was an all volunteer fire department. I can still see Junior tearing off his apron as he came from behind the meat counter to answer a call.
