Title: Do Bees Hate Dog Poo?
Post by: tbonekel on January 26, 2014, 06:31:32 pm
Man, people will post anything around here! I was out walking in my yard this afternoon and I stepped in some dog poo. I got most of it off, but you know, it sometimes lingers. Anyway, I happened upon my hive area and was standing about 4-5 feet from one of the hives just watching and minding my own business. Bang! I got dinged on my arm. Not only that, but one of the girls followed me for about 100 ft. from the hive. Was it because I smelled bad?  :P

Hmmmmm, I don't know Tbone. You could blame it on the dog poo……OR ………take a bath.

Do you have your epi-pen, just in case you're allergic to soap?

It sounds to me like you definitely got the dirty end of the stick!
Dirty was not really the word I was thinking of.

Maybe the smell of feces rings a bell with BEARS.  Did the bees see this upright large animal with a BAD smell, and relate it to a bear?  I have never read of bees smelling, but then again, I have very limited knowledge of bees.

""I have never read of bees smelling, but then again, I have very limited knowledge of bees.""

If they didn't smell, they wouldn't emit pheromones. Smell is probably their most used sense.

"I have never read of bees smelling,"

lazy, what iddee said.  also, the 'sense of smell" is referred to as chemoreceptors or odorant receptors, and is located in their antennae.  i think there is a current article on this in one of the bee journals, if you subscribe to either.

"Smell is probably their most used sense."  I'm disgusted with my knowledge of bees.  If you don't see me post again, start looking on Ebay for used equipment.

I don't think much of anything stinks worse that dog poop. Except this guy I work with. His farts should be illegal and you can't use the bathroom after him for quite a while. But it does seem to give him some degree of amusement.

You have never worked in a boiler room with a guy who drinks heavily and loves garlic with every meal.
Then you would understand what a stinky man was.

I will also, iddee. This time last year, I knew almost nothing and still am learning something new almost everyday. But, apparently, I haven't learned how to avoid dog poo.  ;D

As I have 4 dogs and am fostering a rottweiler, I am an expert at avoiding dog poo. Take yard rake, rake to perimeter of fence if your dogs like to dig. If they don't like to dig, rake to perimeter of fence, scoop up with square shovel, put in dog chow bag and out with trash.

Lazy, I'm a LOT closer than Iddee. You aren't quitting!

Heart is full, pockets are empty, but never again will I foster a stubborn rottweiler who weighs 97 lbs, has bad hips and a possessive attitude, is 3 years old and unaltered. He has learned not to pee in the house and that nite nite means go to sleep chew your bone but don't bark all night because I crated you.

He leaves tomorrow. Didn't mix with my dogs for contagion issues, still not mixing for potential problems, he is a sweetheart and good that he got out of the pound, but oh my I am not big enough to pick him up. Had to get a volunteer to come help me take him to the vet.

Check Facebook. That is where the shelters are posting their pets, some have gotten their EU on healthy dogs down below 20%, a few are claiming zero, not sure. But there are rescues and shelters and in Texas hundreds of dogs are euthanized daily. Cities enforcement of spay/neuter laws are slack, we have extra dogs. The big boy in the tub getting a drink is headed for Northern Michigan tomorrow.

Jen - always happy to help a pup find a good home: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Italian-Greyhound-Rescue-Northern-California-IGCA/239643372727474

Look to be close to you. Rescues will cost more than adopting from the pound BUT you rarely have to deal with kennel cough, heartworms are usually already treated if present, the dog is almost always spayed or neutered already and has been fostered with actual people in houses, not coming from a pretty awful place.

I pull them off death row, it is not easy, but it is rewarding.  And rescues always need fosters, gives you a chance to try the dog out, gives the dog a chance to try you out, and there is no love like a failed foster.  They have several that need fosters

That's awesome Gypsi, my hat's off to you. And thanks for the fb link. If I have an epiphany with a dog I can take the course to train and love that dog, most any dog. Last year California But I'm sure not a cat person. But I do capture feral cats for spay/neuter. We hava clinic in our town that has several weekends a year for captured ferel for problem cats.
