I'm up to my ears in medium nucs, I have 8. Have sold 2. During our next bee group meeting, I want to do a short presentation with 1 deep hive box and 3 medium hive boxes, and how both set ups equal the same volume of bees. I don't understand this math, but we have discussed it before on this forum. Hubby keeps saying that it's 1 deep hive box = 2 medium hive boxes. I think it's 3 medium hive boxes.

You really should listen to your husband.

2 Deeps = 3 Mediums
18-1/4" frame depth vs 18-3/4" frame depth
-
Oooh, that's where my equation went off. So it would be 1 deep = 2 meds...
-
No, it would be 1 Deep = 1.5 Mediums
-
Ummm, well if you want to be exact about it..Yah! But the closest we can get would be 1 deep = 2 meds...
I mean, how else can we do that?... unless I'm missing something here, which is very possible ;)

1 deep and 2 mediums is what you'll have to do.

Okay! Thanks you guys. I really need to know what I'm talking about at the next meeting and this really helped :eusa_clap:

Don't forget our shallow friends. 2 shallows would be very close to 1 deep. Yes people do still use them.

I thought shallows were designed for comb honey?

Too much math this early in the morning, ha! I have a few shallows I use for honey supers. I can fit two of them in each basket wall in the extractor. I don't use them for comb honey. I actually like their size. But, I have too many mediums going on to change now.

We were using shallows when were trying foundationless, but I added plastic foundation to all the frames this year and that is what we are going with. Why waste a good frame and a good box. Easier on the back too.....
