How would you recover from something like this? Vandals are worse than thieves!!

How sad. I hope they catch the vandals.

Jen, you might be on to something there.  A competitor or possibly a personal relationship gone wrong?  HMMMM.

To me the destruction is too complete for it to be just hoodlums.

What a shame!  Jen, I think you are on the right track.  This appears vindictive.
I thought I saw something about donations have begun to roll in.  I can't seem to find it now though.

don the fat man had hives stolen once & the not much afterwards someone sprayed the nucs he had ready to sell with pesticides. after the theft i'd have invested in some game cameras. you never know what might show up on a game camera.

Rober, I really hope that if these beekeepers build their apiary again, that they can come up with a way to protect the bees. I know of beeks with electric fences for bear and critters.

I see the Los Angeles Times has picked up this story.  It says the couple has received enough donations to rebuild their apiary.  "Smashing the beehives and killing half a million bees was a senseless attack, and police are still looking for the culprits. But the fact that thousands of strangers saved the business from ruin makes this one of the most inspiring food stories of 2017."

I’ve got mixed feelings about that.

I’m happy for the beeks, but it kinda lets the offenders off the hook. They can self-justify their actions because everyone pitched in and fixed things.

“See? I didn’t do anything very bad!”

It may make it easier for the vandals to commit future crimes.

Just to clarify, I'm glad people are helping these beeks recover their losses.  I just wish the news media wouldn't publicize the money and make it sound like everything is now okay for them.

Several months ago, Riverrat started a thread about a beekeeping family, in Kansas, that had a trailer loaded with hives and the trailer was stolen.  I ran into the wife at a state beekeeping meeting.  They found strewn hives dotted across the country side.  Obviously, the trailer was what the thieves wanted.  She expressed frustration with the Barney Phyfe style of police work and they have written it off as a loss.
In the case of the Sioux City beekeepers, I did read that the police will continue to investigate.  I also read that the couple did have a trail camera in place.  The vandal(s) destroyed or stole it as well.
I feel for these people.

With family that had trailer stolen in Kansas the hindrance is they had found busted hives in several counties and towns making multiple jursidictions involved.  In Kansas the different Jurisdictions have yet to learn to work and cooperate with each other,  )Once we get them in first grade we are hoping to work on this)  Same issue I dealt with when my planner with the bee cards was stolen .  Nothing was ever done to the thieves and very few items returned because they could not figure out which jurisdiction to prosecute.  One would say the couldn't the other would say we wouldn't etc.  Hopefully the vandalized yard will be investigated at the people caught.  Even if caught and convicted the owners will still not recover any money from the convicted as in the courts they sentence you to restitution but once your probation ends and your fines are paid they cut you loose you may get a little but once this is done it  leaves you only the option to pursue the matter in civil court which is more headache and costly than the original loss
