Title: Modifying a Blacksmith Saying
Post by: Walt B on February 04, 2014, 07:53:14 pm
Aside from some folks thinking honey is available by just going out to the hive and turning a spigot  :), I have had a few (not many) responses to the selling price such as, "That's too much." and "I can get it for less at Wal-Mart." Rather than being really indignant, I suggest that they either go to Wal-Mart or buy honey elsewhere.

But, I remembered a Blacksmith saying that went something like this, "There are only two ways that a blacksmith can go to he** (very hot place): work cold iron and not charge enough."

I think that can be modified for beekeepers to "There are only two ways for a beekeeper to go to he**: don't use smoke when you're working the bees and don't charge enough for their honey."

What do you think?

Walt

too funny.....!!! :D
i had a customer last summer who stopped by my roadside stand. he was driving a mercedes suv, and he and his wife were dressed in designer clothing. he wanted a 15 dollar jar but was complaining about the price and wanted to pop the lid to taste the honey.  i gave him a sample. another 20 questions, and again complaining about the price, meanwhile, customers coming and going.  i finally said to the guy, look, can i ask you a personal question, how much money do you make an hour, cuz i don't make any.  i reached back behind my table grabbed a hat and veil, (keep it there for kids to try on) set it on the table, and said to him, here's my veil, there's my hives, you go get the honey, and i'll wait for you to come back.......... :D

he bought 4 jars.........

You think I am stinging you?  You can have it for free if you go and take it out of the hive yourself, heck I would even pay to watch you collect your bargain honey!

Am going to have to remember that U Pick line!

$90 for three pounds of bees, $200 for one hive kit plus shipping and assembly. One year and a little luck and work you can have your own supply, or pay now and enjoy with out the gamble.

I like that one Walt.

after several years of selling honey here to pretty much the same crowd I don't get those kinds of responses anymore.  matter of fact one or two of my best customers inform me I should charge more.... in regards to price I do like to price stuff so anyone should be able to afford a taste of good honey.  I do not use WalMart or Sam's Club honey to determine my own price... it is not the same and if you can not figure that out the first time you taste my honey then certainly my honey would be wasted on anyone with such a lack of taste buds.  I have in recent times had old codger that buy 4 quarts at one time try and give me a bonus/tip and young ladies with children at their side tell me 'they want to give me a big wet kiss' for providing them and their children with something with such a wonderful taste.  grandpa (which I ain't and never will be) is of course quite flattered by the offeringsbut being a grown person do no how to say no to both.

'they want to give me a big wet kiss' for providing them and their children with something with such a wonderful taste.

LOL  What no sense of adventure in your old age T??

My wife gets the biggest kick out of it when my flirtatious manner gets me in trouble.. I turn bright red and start looking for the exit signs...

I havent had any complaints about prices, my wife had one from an older lady and raised the price a dollar, when she complained about that she raised the price another dollar..  The lady said something about apparently not wanting to sell. My wife told her that everything we had would be gone in a week so she didnt need to sell her honey to someone that didnt appreciate it..
I gave trying to teach her how to be politically correct years ago.
