A hive I thought I lost in last big freeze had activity in the doorway today, must say I am surprised. while a warm day , not warm enough to open up to be sure.
Oh well bonus if alive, and no biggie if other bees are looking for honey in the deadout.

Like I tell some folks, I still hear bees in almost all my hives to this point. It doesn't mean they are a functioning colony, or even viable, or maybe they are even being robbed out. But at least I hear bees, and that sure as heck beats the alternative right now.

Agreed!! Supposed to turn up into the 30's later this coming week, so I hope to take the stethoscope to the hives.. I am praying this is the last nasty cold snap, but know well that more is easily possible for quite some time.. Would ONE 50 degree day to check stores be to much to ask?

lazy, up here? with our weather? ain't gonna happen for awhile according to forecasts.....50 degrees is ........well, a loooonggg ways off!

Milwaukee this morning was a case of walk 10 blocks even with a military goretex on, and still feel the chill. A wet snow or a good rain is coming!!! I can feel it.

yeah I know the weather's been atrocious down here in Florida, there's been two days were below 35 what a disaster almost freezing

How many hives do you have? Give them a quick wrap around, slightly overlapping with 2x4 fiberglass wall stud insulation. Then give it a good 2 wraps of roofing-tar paper. Put a couple bungees around it or wrap & tie it snug with bailer twine. Put roughly a 2x2 cut off of osb, plywood, etc(it doesn't have to be pretty) on top of the telescoping lid and weight it down with a big stone or a cinder block to keep the rain out of the insulation jacket, and the wind from knocking it down. Trust me on this. Keep those bees warm if they're alive this long!!!

I know a fellow who thought one of his hives was a dead-out. He saw a wee bit of activity, and the first warm day he ripped the top off and immediately took 11 stings from a healthy hive of bees. One of these days, i will tell you how it is that I know so much about this beekeeper. :) Don't give up too soon.

Sure is a surprise when you think it's to cold for them to fly.

I had a DBL. nuc that I thought was dead half the cluster was frozen a week ago so I figured it was doomed . Today I was checking my bee yards and that nuc was a humming away along with the rest of my hives.
Spring can not get here fast enough for me been a long cold winter.
