Wood stove is topped off, horses watered and grained, chickens fed and watered.. so NOW I have my coffee in hand and look out the window at the white landscape, I see another inspiring sight...
Thats Eddie Eagle and his soaring companion Ellen Eagle soaring past on their daily route...
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a317/KnitePrince/DSCN0226.jpg) (http://http://s14.photobucket.com/user/KnitePrince/media/DSCN0226.jpg.html)
SEVEN Degrees.. with 15 - 20 mph winds.. OK... thats enough winter.. is it spring yet?
-
Good morning. Cold here as well.
Hey LazyB, we have a thing about 15 minutes from here every year in Sheffield Mills. All the chicken farmers up here save their dead birds and freeze them and then in a few weeks they start to put out all the frozen carcasses in a field. They've been doing it for a few years now and the eagles have figured it out and show up in numbers you would not believe. There can be as many as 6 to 10 sitting in a single tree, waiting.

The wood stove is going and I can smell bread a baking; the horses are fed and watered and I fetched back a wheel barrow of wood. When the bread comes out I am going to have a good thick crust with honey and sesame butter drizzled on! Life is good!

Your right Lazy. They have brought large field tankers from the fire department to get me before. I have a 4x4 now that can get me in if I need to.

Good morning. We got a bit more snow last night, but not enough to fire up the snow blower yet. I'm anxious to show my wife how to run it.

Good Morning, all. 32 here, or 0 to Perry.
Perry, just be sure you aren't bent over when you go to show her how to use it. :o
-
No typo buddy! ;)
In all seriousness. I often point out to my wife as we're driving around, how I notice a lot of women out there mowing lawns and such in the summer. She just looks at me and says...........nothing! :?
I know where I stand on such things around here. Self preservation has always been a big factor in my life!
-
LOL

I don't think we're supposed to get over -10 C (10 F) here today. Also, storm warning for the area, 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12") of the white stuff possible this weekend.
And so it starts.......!
-
I thought it had started here.. but supposed to be 32 today.. and 48 on Thursday!!! MOVE BEES MOVE!!
I'd be perfectly happy if this was one of those winters we didnt get enough snow to keep the ground covered!!! You can keep it all right up there Perry!
-
Yesterday we had freezing fog,so I rolled down my window and took a picture. This is what your missing Zookeep.Today we have regular old rain.
(http://i847.photobucket.com/albums/ab31/jcb63/th_freezingfog001_zps29bc0a08.jpg) (http://http://s847.photobucket.com/user/jcb63/media/freezingfog001_zps29bc0a08.jpg.html)

8 to 12 inches that doesnt sound like much fun Perry... The Wife all set with Snowblower instructions?
supposed to be 27 here today with a chance of snow showers, and 7 tonight.. but I see that by Thursday it is supposed to be 46 degrees... So far so good for allowing a decent day now and then the bees can move about and stay on food..
Probably work in the shop most of the day... get more boxes and frames built!! " Yall take care now, you hear?"
-

-
Snow patrol???????? you mean you got to go looking for it???????
-
well g, snow patrol at my house consists of a wide array of shovels, brush broom, ice choppers, ice melt and a roof rake, oh and a fangled thing i rigged up to brush the snow off the satellite dish using the roof rake......
-
38 F.. 3 C. here, cloudy and clearing. Sunny and 51 F...10.5 C. this afternoon.
-
-12 C ( 10 F) here this morning, and the snow we were expecting is starting to fall. :?
-
Pulll your hat on tight Perry.. BIG mug of hot coffee, pull a chair up by the window, put your feet up and enjoy what you cant do nothing about. Looks like were gonna be getting hit by Electra the end of the week.. of course.. thats a week away, lot can change by then. With any luck they will decide its gonna miss us :D
-
It's 20 degrees here and the sun is shining. We have had only a trace of precipitation here. We need a lot more for a good nectar flow in the spring.
I will be making honey almond bark and banana bread today. I think those will make good Christmas presents for some folks.
-
Was rainy and 70F all day yesterday
Front done come through now its like winter again!
Mornin folks!

rainy and 70 and its like winter again?? JP... expect a call for a cutout soon.. AFTER I plant the concrete vibrator on the wall next to the hive!!!
-
Warmed up some overnight. Windy. Snow closed all the schools and there are power outages around. Not much moving today I expect.
-
Sounds like a good day to stay inside and drink coffee Perry!!
14 here this morning.. but looks like the next three days will be in the upper 30's and 40's on one of those days!! WIth luck it will melt the snow and we wont see another flake!!
-
More snow in the 20's. I am with Lazy and Perry, stay in and drink coffee...and build equipment. Too bad I am working extra duty today.
-
Banana bread made...CHECK!
Honey Almond Candy made...CHECK!
Fudge made...CHECK!
Honey bottled with bows and out the door to husband's co-workers...CHECK!
Now this Santa's helper can focus on wrapping a few presents.
-

That sure sounds like some good eats tight there.
-
Good morning.
School's are open today after being closed on Monday!!
Now they're calling for more snow tonight and tomorrow, another 8 inches. Sigh. :|
Probably won't do the last farm market on Wednesday, there won't be anyone there.
-
You get that snow blower running yet? Sounds like your going to need it!! Supposed to be 36 here today and 42 tomorrow with chance of rain.. just in time to melt all the snow so we have a muddy brown Christmas.. happy for the break in cold temps though!
-
Morning, still cold and snow on the ground. I have the same question Perry, you get that blower working?
-
mornin' ! i was here, snowed again yesterday. more snow coming in, at least we caught a break on the subzero temps. well, i am off to bottle some honey, received a few orders this morning. went to the last christmas party last night before christmas, i won't have to skate around the ice in a pair of girlie heels until january now......
-
I didn't manage to get it running, but a small engine guy down the road just picked it up and will see what he can figure out. He said he would get it back to me today cause they're calling for another 8" tonight.
-
Whooeeee!!! thermometer says -3 and the winds blowin about 20mph... Driveway drifted in and the wife TRIED to make it.. needless to say.. I've been out shoveling and pushing while SHE sat in the car... fingers are tingling, ears burn.. what nose?
Now.. you would THINK that whoever got STUCK would do the digging.. SO.. I believe REWARD should be in order!!!!
"Fahgeht it! Mistah!" was the reply in that Maine accent.. :'(
-
wow lazy, we are at -3 with a windchill factor of -20, and the winds are whipping here pretty good, and some snow falling. i'm not going anywhere today, and i am not going to spend much time shoveling anything either. but then i not stuck in the driveway.....LOL!
merry christmas everyone!
-
was 73 the other day and now 43, 30 degree difference in just a couple of days, BBBBRRRRRRRR
-
Good Morning~ Yeap, G I fired my wood stove back up for full throttle again.
-
Good Morning~ Yeap, G I fired my wood stove back up for full throttle again.
I cleaned the chimney Friday. I might start a fire later this week.
-
Greg, I have been burning since October and I count on a warm/dry day in December to do a mid-season chimney clean but that didn't happen. Is this first time firing yours?
-
Greg, I have been burning since October and I count on a warm/dry day in December to do a mid-season chimney clean but that didn't happen. Is this first time firing yours?
Yeah, it's more for looking at rather than heat. I'll probably build a fire Friday (I've got to work through Thursday).
-
I see, my stove is for primary heating when the temps are below 32. The heat pump is not not efficient at all below 32. I had heating the bills the first year in the 650 to 800 range until installed the wood stove. Now, my bills do not exceed 250 in the winter months.
-
I had heating the bills the first year in the 650 to 800 range until installed the wood stove. Now, my bills do not exceed 250 in the winter months.
WOW!!! we heat with electric (heat pump) and the coldest months it is less than $220. Electric everything, no gas. Have been looking into the outside hot water set ups, always a tree or two laying around the farm.
-
I think it is over a month now since I let the fire out. Wood stove is the entire heat. 13 Below F. or -25 C out there right now. Just went out and plugged in the VW Diesel cause i got an 8 a.m. appointment to have my teeth sharpened.
I use about 12 face cords or as you may call it ricks of wood a year. I have it dried at least a year ahead and no creosote accumulates aside from what falls down into the cleanout. That amounts to about a gallon or bit more a year. If you are burning soft wood or unseasone at all the chimney cleaning is a big deal for sure. They are scary when they light off!
-
-17 degrees.. winds 8 - 10 mph Its BLOODY cold outside! TOld wife she had to go fill the wood stove.. LOL right... off to fill the wood stove...
-
"-17 degrees.. winds 8 - 10 mph " Hey Lazy is that temperature reading in Fahrenheit of Foreignheat degrees
-
good morning and merry christmas!
lazy's not the only one with goofy temps! -20 F with windchill factors at -30......yikes!
-
Good Morning! Yeap, freezing here in Indiana too.
-
I had heating the bills the first year in the 650 to 800 range until installed the wood stove. Now, my bills do not exceed 250 in the winter months.
WOW!!! we heat with electric (heat pump) and the coldest months it is less than $220. Electric everything, no gas. Have been looking into the outside hot water set ups, always a tree or two laying around the farm.
Use all the electricity you want to. We'll make more. ;D
-
In the fall I can see the lights on top of the bridge over Ft. Loudon and at night can here the horn blow for the lock master. Just think of all the free electric that went by with all of the flood gates opened up.
-
Thats Fahrenheit not Celsius !!! 23 here this morning so its like a heat wave rolled through last night..
Spent the day yesterday shoveling the pond, and then spraying it with water so wife and company can SKATE on it today... She was AWFULLY happy I did all that shoveling .. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!
I have a heatmore wood stove. I built a 24 by 24 wood shed, and set the Heatmore back in the corner of it, ran the pipes into the house.. It heats the house, and the hot water... so long as the stove is going we can take showers two hours long and never run out of hot water.. I had a concrete shower built with two shower heads and a glass door.. so I can take a shower with her, or just set my chair up outside the glass door... ;D It's ALL in the planning!!!
We have an LP Gas furnace that heats the water in the event the wood stove goes out, and we also have AC/HEAT heads on the walls for air conditioning in the summer and heat in spring and fall when you dont want to heat the concrete up yet.. Without figuring how much money I spend on Chainsaw gas and gas for the Dually its hard to say how much we spend a month.. but it CANT be very much.. Oh, we had a well drilled so no water bill either... Just need to buy the 24000KW Wind generator!!!!!
-
A chilly 25 F here this morning.
Best part is three of my four girls are home, one in Germany but home soon also.
Nothing better than family!
Cooking going on in the kitchen and the house is starting to smell yummy.
-
Good Morning and Merry Christmas. Wow, Scott, you have it going on with the heat. I have entertained the thought of an outdoor burner. One reason being I have five women in my house and no hot water left for dad..ha! I caught your two shower head purpose too, heheh. I have 2 heads in mine too.
G, I will be home soon for my warm Christmas fun...little less than 5 hours of patrol left.
-
I hope everyone has a great and happy day! :D
-
good morning cold and snowy here
-
Got 3 in. to 4 in.of snow last night, temp. in the 20's F, cows standing with there heads in the hay feeders, haven't made up my mind yet to either work in the shop or start on income taxes? :-\ Jack
-
Cold (for here) here...got down to 28 last night. Supposed to go to low 20's tonight. Guess I'll let the water drip. Pipes froze a couple of years ago, no damage, but I'm still "gun shy".
Walt
-
SNOW! Good Morning!
-
Bah! Humbug! SNOW here too >:( Been plowing and shoveling since 5:30.. Up side??? Well I took Jay's inner cover with me and mailed it before I came back to the house...... Gimme a minute, I'll think of another up side ...........
-
snow here too and week two or so of subzero temps, cool on the inner cover lazy! can't wait to see jen's pix!
-
It was 45F a little while ago. However, look at the picture attached and see if you can tell when the cold front came through. It's gonna be cold for the next week or so. I've started a fire in the fireplace. Man alive! The wind has really picked up. This graph is from my home weather station:
(https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wxforum.net%2Findex.php%3Faction%3Ddlattach%3Btopic%3D21221.0%3Battach%3D11752%3Bimage&hash=0d2516d52ca13b2d442351349435f9407c7601f0)
-
-20 C here right now. Blizzard warning in effect for tonight and tomorrow. Up to 12" of snow too.
-
- 23C / -9F, windchill - 35C / - 31F, bitterly cold morning with frost quakes
-
-16c here today windchills to -28. don't really want to go to work today
-
About the same here I guess 0 Deg F with 15 mph winds.. Man its decided to be an ugly winter so far... I guess the bunions and old injuries and even the fuzzy caterpillars were correct in their predictions for a COLD winter.... >:(
-
17F with 10 mph winds this morning. Brrrr! (https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi585.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fss298%2FSlowmodem_photo%2Fcold.gif&hash=34238f137358b3e519c34ace0dc24ce5030da7ad)
I'm gonna throw another log on the fire!
-
Had a low of 24 this morning with a 10 mile an hour wind, don't know the wind chill, all I know it was cold and going down to 16 by Monday.
Ken
-
- 23C / -9F, windchill - 35C / - 31F, bitterly cold morning with frost quakes
What is a frost quake? That sounds scary.
-
had never heard of a frost quake either, just had to google it myself. Pretty wild, bet that plays havoc on the underground utilities.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryoseism
-
It sounds like a shot gun being fired. According to a local TV station some people called 911 to report gun fights.
-
you southerners don't know what your missing when that happens on your roof.....lol...... ;D
and it wasn't my hillbilly neighbors shooting at something.... :D
here's another story:
Cracking Ice Noises Causes Multiple Calls to Police (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/kitchener-waterloo/cracking-ice-noises-cause-multiple-calls-to-guelph-police-1.2482692)
-
The ice on the pond woke me up a few nights ago, I expect it will wake me again tomorrow night with -16 to -20 temps.. when the ice pops with water under it, the sound is deep and hollow sounding.. we always called it "making Ice"
-
Last week my weather station reported -40 C-------I almost believed it until I looked outside and it stopped reporting. I climbed up the pole where it is positioned to check its contacts. All looked well but only after a few hours did it resume reliable reporting. It's been working OK since then but I might have to make adjustments in the broadcasting wavelength to avoid possible interference from unknown sources.
Today was a beautiful sunny day. with a high of 22C. Now (9 PM) it has dropped to 10C.
-
Weather warning that came through a little bit ago for this area....
... WIND CHILL WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM NOON SUNDAY TO NOON CST TUESDAY...
* TIMING... SUNDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING. THE LOWEST WIND CHILLS WILL BE SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT.
* WIND CHILL READINGS... 30 TO 45 BELOW WITH NEAR 50 BELOW EARLY MONDAY MORNING.
* TEMPERATURES... 21 BELOW TO 3 ABOVE ZERO SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING.
* WINDS... WEST 20 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 35 MPH SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY.
* IMPACTS... BITTERLY COLD AIR AND STRONG WINDS WILL CREATE DANGEROUSLY LOW WIND CHILL VALUES... . RESULTING IN FROST BITE... HYPOTHERMIA OR EVEN DEATH IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN
I'm thinking I better order at least two packages.. My bees are well set, but it isnt often the weather is this cold this LONG... Talking with the beekeeper I got the extractor from today, and he is praying he manages to get half of his hives through this. The way I see it, if I do order two packages, then ALL of my bees will survive!!!
-
It's been a tough one so far, and we just started the 2 coldest months! :o
-
Agreed Perry. Keep the fingers crossed!
-
same us us lazy, unprecedented and record breaking sub zero temps. yikes!!!
-
Considering that global warming is an average, someone must be sizzling hot to "counterbalancee" your cold days.
My, isn''t it hot outside. I think I'll turn on my air conditioner and make the world hotter yet....... :o
-
Morning!
9 degrees and 25 - 30 mph winds. Supposed to get COLDER as the day progresses... Guess I better get out and get my wood furnace filled, cuz this is gonna get ugly. standing here on the heated floor my feet are warm as I watch the WAVES of snow roll across the field. Thankfully the wind is no longer out of the SE so its hitting the backs of the hives and the windbreaks first. Going to do something I have never done. Get the wife to bring a stethoscope home so I can listen to the hives when it gets into the thirties next weekend to see if they are still kicking.
Not bad standing here with my coffee in hand, but I have to go out THERE to fill the wood stove.. OOH! Wait, the truck is in the heated garage! MUAHAHAHA!!!!
-
Still at 30 degrees here but snow is coming down pretty good. 2" so far. Already went and check my wood furnace so I'm good for awhile. We'll soon follow you on the temps Scott unless you can keep most of it your way ??? ???
-
LOL I can Try FinHome I can go outside and do a snow dance naked, maybe Mother nature will get to laughing so hard she'll relent on this nastiness.
* WIND CHILL READINGS... LOWERING TO BETWEEN 20 BELOW AND 30 BELOW ZERO THIS AFTERNOON... THEN AS LOW AS 30 BELOW TO 45 BELOW ZERO EARLY MONDAY MORNING.
* TEMPERATURES... SINGLE DIGITS AND TEENS DURING THE DAY... THEN LOWERING TO NEAR 19 BELOW ZERO OVERNIGHT AND REMAINING BELOW ZERO THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING.
* WINDS... NORTHWEST 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 30 MPH.
* IMPACTS... BITTER COLD TEMPERATURES AND STRONG WINDS WILL CREATE LIFE THREATENING CONDITIONS.
Unfortunately for you there are certain parts of my anatomy I VALUE!!!!!! so the naked dancing in the snow AINT happening !!!!
-
Just a tad TOO MUCH INFO SIR
Your weather schedule just about duplicate ours. Going to be a fun ride though I've been through these kind before. I think we'll do just fine :)
-
OOH! Wait, the truck is in the heated garage! MUAHAHAHA!!!!
I ain't even got a garage. You can call home and ask my wife! (Uneasy Rider - Charlie Daniels Band). But I do hope to get a garage built this spring.
37F at midnight, currently 40F. Maybe making it to 50F this afternoon. 16F in the morning and 18F for a high tomorrow. Then colder Tuesday. I don't think many (if any) people down here wrap their hives. It will be interesting to see how the bees fare.
-

Awoke to a beautiful winters morn. The calm before the sub zero winds tonight.

Right behind you Jim but this is only part of the snow. They just upgraded us to a possible 12"-14" now.

That pie will be frozen by then!!

Add another 4" to my picture. County just shut down all roads. If its not an emergency, you could get arrested for being on the roads :P

Yep, I saw some of my girls out and about, too.
Going from 49F this afternoon to 16F in the morning. High of 18F tomorrow. Brrr!
Got some winterizing done. Got the vents closed for the crawl space, a light in the root cellar, and the dog house winterized with straw, and more rags inside.

A couple of years ago, when it got below zero, I went down to the dollar store and bought a cheap heating pad and put where the dog lays on an old porch swing (his couch). He wouldn't go near it (stupid dog). So now I just try to make him comfortable as I can. Dogs are like bees, they're going to do what they're going to do, not what I want them to do.
-

I BEG your pardon?!!?!!? That would be a mess that several folks, including me would SERIOUSLY regret if someone tried to arrest me for going to check on my businesses or properties during a storm..
Because of a national emergency like a contagious Virus or Military emergency with fighting going on fine, but because of the weather? AGAIN, I am glad I live in this little Podunk town!!!!
-
In Illinois, it is the same law, but they are very relaxed about the enforcement. I have stayed out on closed interstates all night bringing in stranded motorists. I was always able to get them to let me through the roadblocks to go back looking for more.
-
Think it's pretty much a way to try to get most of the people to stay off the roads. Not sure they will enforce it too drastically. We've got almost a dozen counties out here declaring a snow emergency. County north of me gave up and sent all the snow plow trucks back to the shop. We're probably close to the 12" mark but hard to tell with all the drifting going on. I've area's with 2" and some with 24". Looks like my hives got a good insulation coat. Just hope that lil Nuc makes it.

I bet the snow will help a lot with this cold/wind Not snowing here thankfully just beginning to get COLD

Was 30 most of the day and been in the mid 20's for the last 3 hours. Waiting for the hatchet to fall

Still 54 here but the wind is really starting to pick up.

Still 54 here but the wind is really starting to pick up.
No word on when 54 will come around here again :'( :'(
-
State police just posted that the two major highways are being shut down. I-65 and 80-94 in NW Indiana. Winds are very nasty out here now and getting colder.
-
hey guys it's 25 below zero here now i think, and that's not windchill factor......wind is pretty brutal, here tell the southern states are going to get some of the brunt of this as well, not the sub zero temps, but unusual low temps for southern states?
-
Just reading about your situations puts a shiver down my spine. BRRRRRR!
And then I look outside here and the beautiful sunny day warms me up.
-
Good Morning and be safe to all in this brutal cold.
Haven't quite caught Riverbee but we're sitting at -15 not counting wind chill. My wood furnace which will normally give us a good 16 hour burn is running out after 7 hours now. Guess I'll be making a few extra trips out there over the next couple days.
-
Just stay safe and warm folks. The news up here is warning the Eastern States and Canada about a "polar vortex" bringing temps not seen in decades. Montana and Manitoba have seen windchill temps of -50 C (-58 F).
-
Last night it got to 55* F then the wind picked up and heavy rains, This morning 18* F and a light snow on the ground. This is supposed to be the high for today and going to 0* tonight.

What is normal for you this time of year?
-
Not a 55* swing that is for sure!!
Not sure what normal is any more, last couple of winters have been really mild.
I would say a few days in the 20's, most of the time dipping to below freezing and highs in the 40's.
-
I know what you mean as far as the last few winters. Nothing normal about them. Just going with the flow ???
-
I would say a few days in the 20's, most of the time dipping to below freezing and highs in the 40's.
That's about right.
-
Morning all. 17F (-8C) last night. Supposed to be about the same tonight. Let the faucets drip last night to prevent freezing; will do the same tonight. After tonight temps are supposed to be above freezing for the near future with highs near 70F (21C) Friday. :)

-4 this morning with very little wind, which is nice for a change. SUpposed to get up around 1`4 degrees today!!! WOOT heat!!!! LOL
We actually hit -47 below Wind chill with a highest recorded windspeed of 48 mph.. that was one ugly night. my SHOWER pipes froze at the top on the north side of the house. Had to put a heater in the shower to get it thawed out. Will have to insulate the concrete wall and build the dirt against it up a bit higher this spring.
Hope everyone else came through that nasty cold in good shape.. has to get warmer from here right????
-
A nice, sunny 7 F. "-13.8 C." here this morning. Made coffee with water saved last night. Don't have any this morning. OH, well. It will thaw eventually. Just gotta have a little patience.
-
Thats what we're hoping for. Expecting 5 today and possibly 38 by sunday. Gotta find them shorts again
-
4F here this morning, already has raced up to 6F. But the sun is out and it's going to be a beautiful day. Took some food and water out to the dog this morning. He was already on his morning constitutional. Should be back into the 60s this weekend. That will be nice.
-
Got to -10F last night, -3F now, supposed to get to 32F today and looking at 50F for Sat. and Sun. The next thing to look forward to is Mud up to your butt. Jack

Ok during the summer I always wishing for the winter to get here, always said I could on enough clothes to stay warm and only enough to cool off, change my mind this morning with a 12 degree outside, freezing than and still now even though it has gone to 24 now with a high of 32. The bees was coming out yesterday and still cold outside and not making it back in to the hive, I think the hives were warming up good in the sun, so I put a brick at the lower entrance, should I close the top one also.
Ken
-
Morning!
-
Strange weather this morning. Tuesday morning was 7 F. This morning is 57 F, calling for 66 F today. Right now we are having thunder & lightening. That ain't supposed to happen in mid Jan. Raining for the third consecutive day.

I wouldn't close the top, you need ventilation of some sort.

not good with computers just learning will have my wife teach me how to load pics but i don't want to make others jealous.

Fun time and excitement today.
Our large metropolis city consisting of 3 city blocks, had a tornado come straight across main street at noon today. Most excitement this town has had since Annie Oakley came to town. Six foot diameter oak trees down, buildings upside down, roofs off houses. All streets in and out are closed for clean-up. Won't have an update until the emergency vehicles allow the streets to open again.
-
At least you've got electricity and a connection to the internet----some consolation.
I feel for you and all your fellow Randlemen. :o
-
Anyone hurt Iddee? On most normal years I am somewhere helping clean up the mess left by a twister. Amazing things.. can completely demolish a house into kindling and broken glass, and still leave the barn on one side and shed on the other side untouched.. Went to one place that still had the grill and patio furniture standing on the porch, but the house was gone...
-
No reports of injuries yet. Don't know the extent of damage yet. Town is still closed off. Didn't look all that bad. Just a small area of half a mile or so, an looked to have stayed 20 feet or so off the ground.
-
Wow Iddee , missed that, was working on madams pantry cupboard all day, so didn't have the news on like normal.
-
Good to hear you're all OK there.
-
Supposed to be 46 here today... EVERY time I look at the forecast its been getting warmer.. last week we were supposed to get to 38is today. Couple days ago we were suppoosed to get to 40, and the weather this morning says its supposed to be 46.. So have High hopes it will hit 50!!!!!!! lookout bees, I'm comin through!

Glad to hear no one was injured. MinnieMo and I welcome you to tornado alley.

Good Morning everyone. 50 F yesterday so I peeped into my hives yesterday (by popping the top and not tearing into them). I discovered I have lost 4 out of 10 so far this winter. Plus, I am not sure about the bees in the 4' tall tree trunk I got from the city bee tree. I could not see nor hear anything from inside the trunk but you never know. I haven't given up on it yet.
-
Good Morning Jim,
Sorry to hear that. Hope the rest hang in there.
Have a good day..
-
Good morning. Jim, do you treat at all? Any idea as to what took them out?
-
Sorry BoilerJim to here about your bees, it is always bad to know they did not make it, here hoping the rest makes it good.
Ken
-
Sorry about your losses, Jim. A 40% loss is hard to take. I would be curious to know the causes. Keep us posted.
-
It's going to be nearly 60F here today and they're calling for snow tonight. This is wacky weather!
-
Was 34 when I woke up this morning.. Been out moving cows and fixing fences all day.. by 3 the wind was blowing 50mph and the temp had dropped to about 16.. Let me tell you I was glad to have that done. Tomorrow my Cell phone is getting shut off and the front gate locked!
-
And Publisher's clearing House will be trying to get in your gate, but will give up and go to the next one on the list.
:'( :'( :'(
-
LOL, thats exactly what will happen!
-
I know what your say LazyBKpr, i just weaned some calfs and it doesn't take much to spook them and lay a fence down. I'm on stand by. 8) Jack
-
Going to be 68 outside today have one hive very busy yesterday i am going to open it today and see why it is the only one out of ten that is so busy.

Thanks for that picture RB. It brings back memories of my childhood in Miami Beach, the cocanut palms, the sea and especially the sky and its many hues.
-
Good for you riverbee, you deserved some vacation time in a good warm place, after around 2 months or more of the cold weather that been going on there would drive anyone crazy, just enjoy your self as much as possible.
Ken

Got the last of the boxes painted yesterday. So one end table and about 200 frames to make. Running out of projects.. need to figure out more before the wife starts pointing at HER projects and stamping her foot at me.

Colder today, but nothing like you folks in the mid-west and north are experiencing...only supposed to get to 55F (13C) today. Was 72F (22C) yesterday, I took the opportunity to till up the veggie gardens. We'll probably plant onions tomorrow. Thursday and Friday highs are only supposed to be around 40F (4C).
All y'all stay warm and take care of yourselves until the polar vortex goes back home.

-6 f outside with 35 mph winds.. I am SO ready for winter to be over.. Last winter wasnt nearly this nasty.. in fact its been many many years since we had an ugly winter like this.. I packed in more wood this year because All the old timers and the almanac predicted a bad winter, and its starting to look like I am not going to have enough.. All I can do is hope we get a mid 30's day before march when I can get down to the bottom and get wood cut.
-
Freezing my tall off here!

got you beat lazy, it's minus 22, windchill -35, another subzero drop for the past couple days, and is going to last for another couple days. like you, we have been in unusual extended low and subzero temps since december. it's getting really old!

rodmaker,
been listening to public radio this morning on your situation, and dry conditions. doesn't make for a good situation for keeping bees healthy, or keeping bees.

Got down to 24F (-4C) last night. Also had about 0.5" (12mm) of snow, which, for us, is a veritable blizzard! ;D
Opened the outside coop for the chickens this morning and they were having no part of the white stuff. Looks like they're staying inside until it melts.
Tomorrow the high temperature is supposed to be 70F (21C). ???

Good Morning. I can't believe how much snow and cold temps we are getting!! Hope the bees survive all of this...really apprehensive about it.
-
ditto blue! we are back down to subzero temps and crazy windchill factors, we shoveled off the driveway and deck looking like polar bears, and the snow is blowing back over. weather says we will remain in this pattern for another week!
-
Every day seems to start out the same here.
Wake up to more new snow fall and single digits
Schools closed again
Plow driveway so wife can go to work
Snowblow path in back yard so little dog can crap
Try to find mailbox after county plow truck passes by
Risk life going to town for more beer
Watch weatherman and see the same for tomorrow
Look in direction of where beehives used to be seen
Go to bed drunk and depressed
Start all over in the morning
We having fun yet? ;D
-
Plow the driveway so the wife can go to work. 8) Your the man, keep up the good work. Jack

Jack, she's the only one that has a full time job around here in winter.

Good evening all. Hope all y'all are keeping warm and safe. We had some snow here a couple of days ago. I haven't been in Texas long enough to forget how to have fun in the snow...I built a snowman.

Woke up this morning with a 45 degrees outside and looked at weather report and do you believe snow tomorrow, well we have gotten it here before but it has been only light dusting. Just hope not a 1973 one with 23 inches of the stuff, closed every thing that day and the next until it kind of melted away petty fast, not out of the woods yet.
Ken
-
we have a 'dangerous wind chill warning' continuing and going on here, where is MISTAH lazy?....... :D was wondering what lazy's getting in iowa.
-20 F here, wind chills are expected to be between -30f and -50f until tomorrow afternoon.
-
60 F. here today. Forecast 30 F. for a high tomorrow, with snow. Everyone I know has pneumonia. Just wish it would be constant for awhile.
-
A balmy -12F here this morning. We're getting used to kind of weather somewhat.
If Lake Michigan freezes over we will have Wisconsin weather and sunshine.

They say everything is bigger in Texas......................................I beg to differ!

Good morning all. Supposed to have a high a little above freezing today. Supposed to be in the 70's Friday. Wonder how I caught a cold? ???
Perry's right, not everything is bigger in Texas. :)

OKAY JIM, On a nice sunny day it's apropriate to give you a welcome to the forum. Getting straight into posting, you almost slipped in under the fence without proper recognition.
How about telling us something about yourself and your background with bees. We're not only friendly, we're a curious group.
WELCOME :welcome:
-
its cold here boys and girls. Im ready for spring
-
cold you say MM? hello from the center of the polar vortex again today......i think the snow blower has more mileage on it now, than my jeep, and my garage is colder than a walk in freezer.....a friend sent me this, this morning......
A Wisconsin Poem
It's Winter in Wisconsin
And the gentle breezes blow.
Seventy miles an hour,
At thirty-five below.
Oh, how I love Wisconsin,
When the snow's up to your butt.
You take a breath of winter air
And your nose gets frozen shut.
Yes, the weather here is wonderful,
So I guess I'll hang around.
I could never leave Wisconsin,
'Cause I'm frozen to the ground!
.............. :D
-
Sounds a bit like Robert Service riverbee.
Here is a limerick about cold in Canada
I met an old man from Quebec,
Who was stuck in the snow to his neck;
I said are you frizz, and he said yes I is,
But we doan call this cold en Quebec!
-
Wife is down in Bama doing an audit for the company she works for..
She said traffic is nearly at a standstill. There is no milk or bread on any shelf, and the lines at the gas stations are LONG... They have closed most businesses and all the schools....
I asked why the panic?
She replied, with a funny catch in her voice...
They are expecting three inches of SNOW
When I finished laughing... I had to ask her if she was serious... She was..
"You would think a hurricane was about to hit here.. The guys riding with me werent impressed with me passing everyone driving 12 mph, so I had to tell them a bit about winters in Iowa and Maine... 3" is a flurry, not a blizzard. They still werent impressed, and didnt let me drive anymore because I am crazy.. I hope that they get to ride with YOU in your truck one blustery winter day, then maybe they will understand CRAZY..
;D 8)

Supposed to be 36 today, 42 tomorrow!!!!!!! Hopefully the bees will MOVE to resources.. The Winter siege is giving us a VERY short break thankfully, but looks like back to teens and 20's by Friday..
-
1.5" of snow through about midnight, schools closed because the temp was only 16 this am and roads very slick. Bright sun outside today and snow melting despite a high of only 36, but that brings more drama.
Drove my son to a friend last night around 8:30pm and I am well versed in Snowy roads and they were bad off the main roads... my 16 year old came back from swim practice around 7:30 and took almost dble the time as normal. Her boyfriend and Two of her friends did not do so well, all leaving the road and that was a HUGE wake up for her.
This morning she says "my brakes are funny , they keep pulsing when I stop" ... needless to say more education needed.
School already closed for tomorrow as the roads WILL Freeze hard tonight - forecast is 17 again. While city roads are not the issue , it is the rural county roads that dont get salt or even ploughed, already hard packed ice in places according to friends who live out there.
South not used to this white stuff.
-
good morning from the frosty, snowy midwest, at least it's above zero here, about 15 d f......snow coming down pretty good, weather says 4-6 more inches of snow. according to my snow shovel about now, it looks to be 8 inches....FIBBERS...... :D
-
Heat wave here today. High of 29F forecast with 4 more inches. Sounds good to me! 8)
-
A late good morning to all.
Supposed to be a bit warmer today (60F), but hasn't made it. New printer arrived so I'll install it. Tomorrow supposed to be in the 70's, so I'll repair the roof shingles damaged by recent winds.
Walt
-
good morning, we have about 8" of snow on the ground from yesterday's storm and it's minus 17 f here. the snowblower, the shovels, the ice choppers are all getting a work out......including me.... :D
i was telling perry and g3 last night that i had gone to the liquor store after all my hard work, and saw a bottle of whiskey on the shelf named 'CABIN FEVER', i almost bought it but didn't. didn't really think it would help me out......or maybe it would have?......... :D
-
LOL Mrs River.. Might have helped, depends on how much you drank!!!
Winter looks to be getting back to normal here.. MAYBE... we shall see.. 10 - 20 deg F is normal this time of year so I wont complain about that. If its 20 I can work outside just fine. Its the -50 wind chill I couldnt take.. Those temps kept up I would have to take the limit off the Captain Black I allow myself to drink.. and that.. would not be pretty!
-
Good late morning all.
Temperature is now in the mid-60's. Supposed to top out in the mid-70's today and tomorrow, with a slight chance of rain tomorrow. If it happens, it will be welcome. We've only had about 0.75" of rain in January (average is a little over 2.5").
Well, I'm off to replace/repair some roof shingles that were damaged by our winds.
Walt
-
Another late good morning all.
Had some winds and the shingles held...all is good. :)
High is said to be in the 60's today, so I'll give the girls some more syrup.
Tomorrow the high is expected to be low 40's so we decided to take the day off and go to the Kimball Art Museum in Fort Worth to see a Picasso and Matisse exhibit from the Art Institute of Chicago. They also have a new building that opened in November, housing some of the permanent collection.
Walt
-
Hope you had a good time Walt!!!
It was a cold morning here, but quickly warmed up to near tropical temps at 20 deg F.. Almost able to wear shorts and flip flops again!!!
The snow is coming down, and the wind is starting to blow.. I think this area might be a bit messy tomorrow morning. I'll have to get up early and knock down the drifts so the wife can get out to the main roads. Till then I'm staying in the house where its warm!
-
Good afternoon all. Just got back from getting me some "culture". It was a nice art exhibit at the Kimbell and we had a very nice lunch.
One thing...on the drive to Fort Worth there was a sign that read, "Various Lanes Closed". ??? Yep, guess the highway department wanted to put a little excitement into the drivers' lives. :D I was thinking they should have added "Let the Games Begin".
Didn't find any closed lanes.
Walt
-
heh, glad you had a good time and an exciting drive watching for closed lanes. :D
Snowed here, we only got about 8 inches, but the wind keeps piling it up. I plowed so the wife could get out this morning. Went in to town and plowed out the shop and the store, shoveled the walks etc, came back home and the road was already drifted closed. Plowed it out again, filled the wood stove, came in the house and took a shower, and got a call from the neighbor to come pull her out.. yeah, the road was drifted closed again.. Going to be a few interesting days while this snow blows about.
-
Good Grief its cold out there! Now theres drifts to contend with as well and apparently more snow on the way.. Winters like this make me wish I had gone south LONG ago.. Advanced Bee Classes tonight.. Looking forward to that. Yall stay warm and safe!
-
Careful what you wish for Lazy, i'm south of you and the temp. is 2 F and wind chill of -15 F. They are saying? we may see 36 F this next Saturday. :o Jack
-
Good morning all. It was 22F this morning. Folks on the news said that we set a record. On average we have 33 days a winter that the temperature drops to freezing or lower. The record was in 1909 where there were 51 days at or below freezing. This winter we have had 52 days, and they predict below freezing temps at night for the rest of the week.
I feel kind of honored that I was here to witness the record. >:(
Walt
-
Just imagine how "honored" you'd feel up here!
-
Perry, Been there (upstate New York) and done that. That's why I'm in the deep South. ;)
Did bring a snow shovel with me and it has worked out well for building raised garden beds. Haven't had the need to use it for the "white stuff".
Walt
-
Good mourning We are finally getting a little rain here in Ca winter trying to set in again . All my bees are in full build up after 70 degree temps in jan. now we have rain and hard freeze warnings hope there are enough bees to keep the brood warm. Weather can't make up its mind this year.
-
we are all getting cabin fever something fierce up here, and the hillbilly's have been way too quiet........sorta scary........ :D
anyway, was chatting with jb in the chat box last night. amazing what we are finding to do to entertain ourselves with all the snow and continuing freezing temps......one of my other neighbors took out his potato gun, and we were shooting ice balls out of the thing. snow balls don't work very well, but the ice balls sure fly quite the distance.... :D
-
Getting our 2nd week of cold weather this winter -20 C -4 F will warm up to -8 C 18 F hefted the hives and ons single was extreamly light so moved it into the basement and will put feed jar on it.
-
well, it's not morning anymore, but just had to poke a little fun on walt,
"Did bring a snow shovel with me and it has worked out well for building raised garden beds. Haven't had the need to use it for the "white stuff"."
i see you also took that snowblower with you when you moved down south and put it to good use......hope you don't have to use that thing....... :D

Showed the photo to my wife...now she's sorry we didn't have a snowblower to bring with us.

Perry, Been there (upstate New York) and done that. That's why I'm in the deep South. ;)
Down here, we kind of think of that as "out west". 8)
-
Hey it quit snowing!!!
The weather update is showing 30's after Wednesday!!!! Happy Dance!
How sad is it that I am excited its going to be in the 30's?
-
Good Morning! Perry, just wondering if you are related to Paul Brandt (one of my favorite country singers), sorry, just had to ask
-
Cindy, are you asking Perry about his pedigree?? That tears me up.Jack
-
LOL! good morning all, cindy welcome, and don't get jack started on perry's pedigree.......
-
Hi Cindy, good to see you here.
I've been asked before if Paul is any relation, and I like to tell folks I'm his better looking brother (easy Jack). Alas, no relation!
He may be richer (undoubtedly), sing better (maybe), but I bet he don't keep bees! ;)
-
Good Morning! Perry, just wondering if you are related to Paul Brandt (one of my favorite country singers), sorry, just had to ask
Welcome and enjoy your stay! :)
-
Had about 6mm of ice...melting now with temperatures above freezing. The next 6 days highs are supposed to be in the 60's and 70's (15's - 22's C). :)
Walt
-
Man that would be NICE Walt! I am GREEN with Envy!
supposed to be 28 here today with snow showers.. a heat wave compared to what its been.. the next few days are supposed to gradually warm up, and the FORECAST says 52 degrees F on THURSDAY.. I have goose bumps.. If it hits 50 it will give me a chance to pop the covers to check supplies ONLY.. My mentor would kick me squarely in the pants, but I need to do it in case the temps drop again and don't come back up till the end of March.
-
I'm with you lazy, the temp. today is to be 36 F and this weekend in the mid to upper 50's. From here on out is when you loose your bees, (in my area anyway) they find pollen somewhere? but will burn through their honey stores fast raising brood and starve before nectar starts coming in. If you think they might need feed,Then Feed sugar is cheaper than bees. Jack
-
We are supposed to get a day or two of 50 degree days next week. I will also be popping the tops to see if I need to resupply my sugar boards - of those hives that have made through the bitter winter so far.
-
Lazy, take your dad-gum weather back up north. High today, 27 F. Snow just starting. Ground barely white, supposed to be 6 to 12 inches before stopping tomorrow night.
-
Ouch Iddee, thats not good down there. Hope you dont lose power!
Our forecasted occasional snow showers have been coming down steadily since this morning, and the tenth we were forecast to get has become about an inch at this point, so I am more or less standing about with my coffee in hand staring out the windows and tapping my foot.
Hope all you folks in the way of Pax pull through witout problem!
-
Hey Lazy! I'll take your dad-gum bad weather any day. California is desperate for snow, like 10 years desperate for Big Snow! We're turning into a raisin here.
-
Praise the LORD we have gotten none of the sleet or snow here but plenty of rain, 3 inches so for, sure wish I could send all of it to places that really need it but only GOD can do that. North of me, around 50 mile got the sleet and snow and if it was as last time they are having a good time on the roads.
Ken
-
I have heard theres problems out that way Jen.. Lets hope yall get some rain soon!
-
Thanks buddy ;)
-
Getting plenty of rain here. JUST above freezing.. so its not actually melting ALL the snow... it rained most of last night and most of today, and theres still quite a bit of snow left.. Thunder today, if it thundered last night I slept through it.. Supposed to be 44 tomorrow, then not come above freezing for quite a while.. Guess I better slide some sugar into the hives tomorrow and hope it gets them at least two weeks.
-
Sounds like the Olympics in Russia and all of their sloppy snow. Freeze, thaw, salt, freeze, thaw, salt. It's treacherous skiing and snowboarding. Many falls and crashes. Heartbreading watching these champions trying so hard to hold it together.
-
Just got back from the feed store, the wind is blowing over 50 miles an hour and seen trucks and trailers turned over on Hyw 65. I was going to stop but a trooper waved me on, got home and seen the shingles standing straight up over the garage and the power was off. The good thing is, that the Generac generator was on, it kicks on when the power goes off and this is the first time its kicked on. I had to drive slow coming home but i had 800 lbs. of feed in the pick=up bed that helped hold the truck down. The temp. was in the upper 60F when i went to get feed and calm? the wind came up in a hurry and it's still at it as i post this and the temp. has fallen to the upper 30F. I would blame Perry or Squirt, but it's blowing from the southwest. ;D Jack
-
That's the state of Misery for ya. Geez. Glad you got home safe.
-
Jack, dont rule out Perry and Squirt.. they are bad enough on their own, put them together and they get DEVIOUS!
RIver is out of its banks after the rains.. and the wind is 20 - 30 mph today.. supposed to be 44 degrees today, and then the temps begin to fall to below 10 degrees again.. so it looks like wind and cold or not I will be sliding more sugar into the hives..
The bees are IN the top box the entire cluster is on the top boards of every hive.. Cant slide sugar in that, so its going to be another box over the inner cover, with the sugar on the inner cover and hope for the best.
-
Good grief, its the neverending winter!!!!
negative temps again.. looks like at LEAST another ten days of 0 or below at night with the warmest temp being 23 on Friday. Glad my bees got a chance to get out last week, but I am starting to get a really bad feeling about this.
I guess the sunny side of the cloud is that the bees I do have survive WILL BE survivors.
Class last night, talked with several beekeepers. MOST have OVER 50% loss now. the local breeder has lost 80% of his Nuc's and 30% of his production hives.
the gent I bought my extractor from has lost all 18 of his hives. Those who still have live bees are worried SICK, much like I am. They, Like I set my bees up with 100 to 120 lbs of stores. Almost every one of them checked their bees when we had the 50 degree day, and 95% of them found their bees IN the very top of the hives. Everyone was scrambling to get sugar into their hives.
Every one was trying to find bees to buy last night. Looks like it will at least be a good year for package and Nuc producers.
-
Looks like the last cold front quite possibly for us before spring sets in, bees should be swarming this week

Morning! 19 degrees and winter storm on the way. Geeeesh, I hear ya Lazy. I am so anxious to get out to my hives and check their food and clean any dead outs.

37 here now, that's blizzard weather for us, Lol

Oh, I would trade for 37 anytime....ha! Blizzard....
-
good mourning all .55 inches of rain over night will take all we can get. 66 degrees and overcast and more rain on the way today.
-
- 13 C/ 9 F, windchill - 26 C/ - 15 F, another week of deep freeze
Three months without the break. If any of my hives survive I should start queen rearing , survivor stock $500/queen :-\
-
More snow moving in. Ugh! I've certainly had enough of winter.
I will also add, my house was the only one for miles around, that still had snow in the front yard and on the drive way. Parking lots with black snow piles don't count.
-
another dusting of snow this morning. Plus some bitter cold. I am totally ready for some real spring weather.
-
Good Morning! Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
-
Good morning.
I feel for ya Marbees.
We have so much snow, the Walmart parking lot is only half the size it normally is because of the mountain of snow. Last year there was still snow on their lot in June. This year is worse.
-
Looks like Titan is about to drop a few inches on us, but were not in the worst of it so I won't complain. You folks further south are going to get the freezing rain.
Also looks like next week its going to warm up into the 20's.. really tired of being excited about temps that are STILL below freezing.. About time SOMEONE figured out how to make it warm up, and rain, snow, or get cold ONLY when I need a day off :P
-
Another .50 inches of rain over night not enough for the farmers to get water but it helps. We are at 36% of normal rain this year how about you kind folks to the east sending us some of your rain and snow? sixty degrees here today the rain has stopped and the girls are flying.
-
Haven't been able to get to the back of the property since mid Jan. with all the mud.I'm ready to send you some of the precip. Just tell me how.
-
Send that rain California way Iddee. Dark dark talk of Cali burning up this summer. Nothing like 105 degree in July with the air full of smoke
-
Morning! 19 degrees and winter storm on the way. Geeeesh, I hear ya Lazy. I am so anxious to get out to my hives and check their food and clean any dead outs.
Our tv weatherman says there's a chance of up to 16" of snow in the Indy area with the upcoming storm. :o I hope everyone up there fares ok!
(of course, it's going to be 70F here Sunday ;D )
-
calling for 6 - 8 inches here. Most of the worst of Titan is south of us. Dont envy those to the south getting the ice.
-
It was so cold today the bees were only flying a mile high :)
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
LOL JP... I'll trade yah!
right around 0 with a 20 mph wind.. Titan is sweeping through, but were not getting half the snow we were warned about. Maybe an inch thats now blown into drifts...
Now.. time to grab the hand cuffs and start tracking down Mother Nature. I'm going to cuff that old Hag to my back bumper. We get another winter like this the hag goes jogging! Thinking the dually can do about 120

Sounds kinky Lazy :)

hehe, was 36 and sunny here, rains coming tomorrow. Got two more removal calls today.. Need more JP videos so I know what to do when I get there. I haven't perfected the bee dance yet!
-
Lazy! Yeah! at least you will be working with the bees.
Bee Dance? Ya just put you booty in the air and shake it baby!
-
LOL..
I had the image of getting the whole gang together to do this for Jen.. wasnt as funny after that image burned its way across my mind.
:P
-
Hahahhaahhahahaha! Better be putting some Twerking in there!
-
Good Morning Keepers!
-
Mornin Blue! Hot Coffee in hand, waiting for it to start snowing.. Yesterday it said rain, today it's saying snow. High went from 32 to 28 as well.. Hereafter known as the Unrelenting winter of 2014
-
Today we got a reminder that there is a summer ahead of us--the temp hit 28 C (82 F) this afternoon....And we're still waiting for rain. January and February broke records for the least amount of rain ever recorded here.
-
Sorry to hear efmesch sure wish I could send you some of the to much rain we are having here to you. I will do some praying and see if that helps for only GOD can send the rain.
Ken
-
Israel and california are in the same shape both setting records for lack of rainfall. 2013 was our driest year ever in the central valley where i live.
-
Sorry to hear efmesch sure wish I could send you some of the to much rain we are having here to you. I will do some praying and see if that helps for only GOD can send the rain.
Ken
How right you are! (Read Deuteronomy, Chap 11, starting verse 10)
-
Boy was it nice today, 72 degrees so I painted my hives and the bees did not like me around, smell of the paint I guess. Suppose to be 74 tomorrow. Just thinking I paint my hives every year and it was 15 years ago that I painted the house, may have to soon looking like it needs it.
Ken
-
Wow... SNOW... Drifts... COLD!
It was nearly 60 yesterday, my bees were out.. Temps dropped last night and it started to snow. Still snowing on and off. 35 mph winds. Hives are all drifted closed...
I have a lot to do today.. several thousand gallons of Diesel fuel to haul, and about twenty salamanders to drag out and line up around my house.. If mother nature wont bring me spring then I'll go after it myself.. so if you look toward Iowa and see the glow, thats where I will be, sitting in my chair with my fishing pole and Drink.
-
Lazy, you really need a vacation to a warmer climate for a week. You losing it man! ;D
-
It was low 60'sF here yesterday, it's snowing here now and weather report says 17F tonight. WILL IT EVER STOP :o Jack
-
70 F. here yesterday. Forecast is snow for tomorrow and Tuesday. Think about August and "maybe" you will appreciate this weather.
-
OKAY!!---we're back in the running and might yet have a honey crop. This past week has finally showed us that it can still rain. We tallied up 88.6 mm (over three inches) during the rains that finally came. And they didn't come as a storm but mostly were spread out and absorbed into the ground, rather than run off down the gullies. Whoopie!!
-
Praise God it pay off to pray, sure am glad you got the rain you all needed.
Ken
-
Wind is HOWLING and its SNOWING as I stand here with my coffee looking out the window...
When I woke this morning.. I wondered why the rifle was not beside the door... then I saw the snow, and realized... my wife put it in the safe JUST to keep me from shooting myself......
-
....and here we're warned to be ready for a "hamsin" developing on Saturday and full blown on Sunday---Temps to be about 28-30 C (about 86 F) and hot dry easterly winds. That might put an end to a lot of the nice spring flowers.
Right now, the bees are working up a storm. Didn't even pay attention to me yesterday as I went through the hives.
-
another wintry blast! about a foot of snow fell here since last night, with more coming down today. started with freezing rain, sleet, then the snow. back to shoveling....
-
Your tough Squirt, I couldn't live like that  I think i've said it before,I HATE SNOW. >:( Jack
-
Well it looks like I may be under water soon, had 3 1/4 buy late yesterday and no telling what this morning, my pump that pumps the water off the pool cover can't even keep up for it is about run over now. We have had a lot of rain before but this is the worst in the 20 years I have lived here. Suppose to be over before the day is out and I a sure will be glad.
Ken
-
Good morning! Sorry Ken for all the water. It is a pain for us when it rains heavy. My septic gargles and the back 40 turns into a lake.
-
..., had 3 1/4 buy late yesterday and no telling what this morning,........... Suppose to be over before the day is out and I a sure will be glad.
Ken
If only we could share in your bounty. We seem to have closed down our winter "rainy" season witn about 350 mm (under 14 inches). No more rain is expected before next September, at the earliest.
A normal winter in my part of the country is expected to bring us about 450 mm (18 inches).
-
ef, can't imagine going 4 to 5 months without rain? If every country was like that, there would be mass starvation. :o I don't see how the bees have any thing to work? i'm guessing you have to water most everything or do you have drought tolerant plants and trees? Is every year like that? Sorry i can't get my brain around that. Jack
-

Every year!! From April till September (or later) totally dry.
The spring honey flow is from plants that flower early, from the winter rains. The summer flow (extracted late July or early August) is primarily from deep rooted weeds (one example is Prosopis farcta, with a root system that has been found to go 10 meters ( about 33 ft) deep.
Our national reservoir is Lake Kinneret (=the sea of galilee) and its water is piped throughout the country. Inadequate rains during the past several years have put us into a pinch and over the last few years desalination of sea water has replaced a lot of the water running in our pipes.
It takes a little getting used to, but, you can imagine how our knowing that for the next several months no rain will fall affects our lives. As a result, we live outdoors a lot more, and leave a lot of our posessions outdoors, knowing that they'll stay dry. Think about how a farmer can plan his seasons, knowing that he'll have no rain between planting and harvest.
But, if you ask me, I too would prefer to have rain all year round--with the proper breaks inbetween the right amounts of rain. That's not asking too much---is it? ;)
-
The rain stoped around 1:30 pm est, and I was glad would have not been so bad if it had not been coming down in buckets, and my office got water in it again. Got another 3 inches so that is 6 1/4 for two days and yesterday it rained from 3:30 in the morning until 7:45. efmesch sure wished I could have send you a couple inches of this rain for it sounds you needed it more than me, a lot more for the ground was still ert from last week rain.

Old man winter is gasping.. I hope this is his last dying gasp.. supposed to warm up to 38 today, and be down in the 20's tonight.. then back into the 50's and 60's...
Packages coming in a couple weeks. (End of April) Nuc's a week or two after that, and queens a week or so after the Nuc's so I can do splits. The wait seems so long for such a short burst of activity...
-
for us too lazy, 20 d Fahrenheit here this morning, wind whipping around and snow coming in later today. we enjoyed a few days of 50's and 60's, and now back to the cold this week.
-
calling for 48 tomorrow, then back to the 50's and 60's but rainy and windy.. 35 mph winds.. looks like its going to be a week before warmth and calm returns.. guess I better get syrup on the hives tomorrow so they have the resources they need while its ugly out.
The weather is holding up my nuc's. I need to relax... get some yoga pants from Perry. Were only half way through April... no reason to rush things yet.
-
Riverbee and Lazy, your posts make me think of how important the change of venue is in the beekeeping world.
If all is well here, while you are just starting your spring build-up, I should be extracting my spring honey crop in about another month. :)
-
Indeed Ef!! If all our bees over here die were expecting You to restock us!!!
-
Lazy, I can't tell if you're an pessimist ("if all our bees die") or an optimist ("expecting You to restock us"). ;D
-
LOL
-
"If all is well here, while you are just starting your spring build-up, I should be extracting my spring honey crop in about another month. :)"
now ef, you weren't rubbing that in were you?............ :D

Thunder storms moving in today. Looks like Spring is here!
Still no dandelions. The Apple trees and lilacs are starting to bud.. One spring flow coming up!!
Still waiting on bees to arrive.. Starting to look like the poo is all going to hit the fan all at once.. but thats usually how it goes around here. Havent been to check the swarm boxes in a couple days, but the weather has been wet, drizzly and raining so not too much of a worry. I have drones emerging so the ability to make queens has arrived. Everything is ready except my patience... The winter has done bad things to my ability to relax and wait. I imagine when the poo hits the fan I will find multiple things I didn't get done. Oh, Mornin!!!
-
I would rather have the drizzle and rain than those freezing snaps.
Scott ""I imagine when the poo hits the fan I will find multiple things I didn't get done. Oh, Mornin!!!""
I have a notion that you are more prepared than I was. And I still don't think I'm out of the dark.
Good Morning to you too ;) 8)
-
good mornin!
i have been watching the storms sweeping across the usa hope everyone is all right. here, it's been raining since last thursday, high winds, driving rain, and 2 days ago it hailed like crazy. the river is up and flooding. i sure hope we don't get the floods we had a couple years ago. the only upside to the flooding river is that it is trout opener here on saturday........ :D
not one of our favorite weekends. it's usually combat fishing at it's finest, and bumping into guys who claim they had owners permission to climb over a fence or take a shortcut through the property...... :D
signs are usually torn down and fences cut, not to mention the trash left behind. a muddy river won't keep them from coming, but it sure is going to be cold, wet and rainy.
-
Its been rough the last few days, and look slike cool, cloudy and rainy till Friday.. supposed to get back to the 60's on Friday and be 70's after Sunday.. I am quite thankful my bees wont start arriving until after Monday. With luck I will have decent weather to get them hived.
-
Good Morning Keep! It's gonna be a warm one today. I can always tell when I walked outside early int he morning and it's warm. Maybe more swarms today? ;D
-
I am hoping for swarms in this area that are NOT from my hives :P
I got a call at 7 AM from the post office.. my queens are here.. Originally intended for UT.. they canceled and so they were shipped my way on the same day.
Splits about to begin as soon as my coffee is finished.. Yep.. 7 AM t shirt weather... Sweating has never bothered me, tingling fingers and toes from the cold REALLY bothers me.. I'll take the warmth 370 days a year.
-
370 days a year?? better stay out of the sun Scott. Jack
-
jack, i don't think it's the sun scott has to stay out of........uhmmmm, it's the rum!!! :D
-
Warm here this morning also, 91 this afternoon, glad I have already looked into the hives to see how they are doing, dang forgot to put the screen tops on them to keep them a little cooler, just an excuse to go out tomorrow and do it.
Ken
-
Yep, 370 days a year by the beekeepers calendar... 30 days of spring, 30 days of summer, 15 days of fall and 295 days of winter... I suppose you didnt read the thread bee math??
-
LOL scott!
very true for us northern beeks. we are finally getting some nice weather here today, we might get to 70...... :D we have had temps in the 50's, a couple mornings of frost, rain and cloudy cool days. dandelion bloom is awesome this year, and one of my apple trees has blooms on it that i haven't seen for several years. this sure looks to be a good honey year for us.
-
wow, are we getting hammered with rain!!! torrential down pours, we are at about 4 inches, and it is to continue the rest of the day. flood warnings and watches.....i bet zweefer is going to be real busy in the crop adjustment department......yikes!
go figure, i washed all the windows .......... :D
-
If I thought washing my windows would help get me rain I'd wash every single one ---TWICE.
Our last drop of rain (not much more than a few drops) was in May. If we're lucky, we'll start getting some new rains for the coming seson come September.
-
I know Ef, same here in draught California. I'll send you rain mojo and you can send me rain mojo Okay? ;)
-
You caught me on that one Jen---I guess my "mastery" of English slang (?) isn't up to date. I haven't the foggiest notion what a mojo is. Please help. ???
-
:) Positive Energy, Positive Thoughts, Positive Magical Spell
I'll be sending you good mojo = I'll be sending you More Rain Energy :)
-
Gotcha----I'm more than willing to reciprocate on that.
-
:) 8)
-
rain mojo to ef.............. :D
we are at 6 or 7 inches, just incredible.....i am really annoyed at the windows.....birthday party on sunday, oh well, and just planted some more garden veggies last weekend....
-
Wow Riv! that's a lot of rain! Sending you clear skies above mojo :D
-
thanks jen!
3 bridges are out nearby, but this is normal for heavy rains. two of the 'bridges' are below the grade of the pavement, (spring creek), the water just runs over...so we have to go around if we want to check on the neighbors or drive their way. the 3rd bridge is a 'real bridge', over the rush river, and the water is running across that, with trees and debris skating just beneath it.....
in may 2012 (memorial weekend) we had a massive snow melt, rain and hail.....we had to 'replace' the gravel driveway, our gardens were almost a total loss. my hives were great, they are just outside the flood plain (doesn't mean anything), they are elevated for this reason. we live beneath a ridge, 40 acres of forest and woods above us, and on top agricultural fields. the water had no where to go but down, and down it came. 40 acres in front, and the river flooded the roadway in sections, and the corn and soy bean fields were flooded and came very close to the back of our pole barn, 573 feet or so from the banks of the river, 40 acres in front.
we had water in the basement of the house and in the garage, so after this event we hired out some major excavation up through the woods and down to the road way, to funnel the water past the house. a 'channel' with a great deal of boulder and rock, and deep and wide to funnel the water away from the house for rains like this.
from may 2012, memorial weekend. all the hard work (and dollars) has paid off since then and i was happy today.....so far, so good!

Wauw! A gully washer for sure. The neighborhood that I grew up in had a couple of flood springs just lik this. Our street was unaccessable, many of our parents had to walk a mile to town to get to work. As a kid, I was fascinated, but as an adult it would be alarming ~
-
Yikes... We got about two inches yesterday... Came pretty fast, but after seeing how some other parts of the country are doing I will not complain.
Sun is up and shining this morning so it looks like I will get a bunch done today.. Time to make queens!
-
Todays' high here was 37.1 degreees C. (almost 99 F) and the sun is blazing away through cloudless skies.
At the spots in the video where the pouring waters could be heard, I closed my eyes and could smell the rain and feel the cool---delicious. Thanks for cooling me off a bit.
-
good morning everyone! well, it's very late morning! gonna be a nice day here, not too hot and not too humid, and a break from the rain. i got caught the other night in a torrential downpour and nasty thunderstorm while mowing the back 40.
today i have equipment to finish priming, some deeps to stain, and some bran spanking new supers to paint! i have been replacing some of my supers that have seen better days........sure love the smell of bran new wooden ware! also got to finish mowing the back 40........and then i might go for a walk or a bike ride, life is good!
-
You make me smile Riv :) I'm spending the day with my two year old grandson while daughter and granddaughter have appointments and a snack down town. My grandson and I will take a dip in the pool and eat peanut butter and honey sammiches ~ Yes! life is good ;) 8)
-
Rb,Now if you would add some bees wax foundation to that smell of new wooden ware, you would think you are in heaven. :D Jack
-
i am in heaven jack, my better half is an angel sent down from heaven long ago to save me from myself........... :D
ps. also, i'm in heaven cuz i am replacing supers and the comb is all drawn, mostly beeswax, even the PLASTIC ones......... ;D 8)
-
LOL
I got the barn painted, the chicken fort painted, got the cycle bar mower rebuilt and mowed the fields.. Started at 7, just getting done at 6:43.. would have gone better if I hadnt had to go buy international hose ends for the mower, and then blew a hydraulic hose.... and then blew another one.... but all done.. THURSDAY and FRIDAY is dedicated to BEES!!!!! Oh, and drinking rum and coke.. Havent had one in about a week... LOTS of catching up to do!
:t3825: :t3816: :occasion14:
NOW, it is TODAY... the day I have been looking forward to all week. Time to get things squared away.. We have an EVENING post now as well.. Never fails I am on the wrong thread.. :P
-
"We have an EVENING post now as well.. Never fails I am on the wrong thread.. :P"
LOL! aw scott, just pick one and post to it.......... :D
mornin~ rain moved in again today so raining here, actually pouring, with some pretty good thunder and lightening going on.
-
Checked about half the hives yesterday.. found ONE hive that has a drone queen.. it was one of the packages... so at this point.. 3 superseded within the first week. Four superseded in the following weeks, and now one of the original queens is laying drone eggs.. She has a GREAT pattern, unfortunately they are all drones.. so how is TWO out of ten for a success rate on package queens? and the summer is still heating up...
Off to check the rest of the hives... Made up my Cell starter yesterday, will punch cells this afternoon and drop them in.. Good day ahead!
-
good mornin!
day 3 of the polar vortex........about 58 degrees here, a light cool breeze blowing, but at least it's not raining! well not yet........ :D i don't think it's supposed to get much above 70 degrees here today. i hope to get the mowing done, and finish priming/painting supers.
-

The front is about 60 miles west of us. The rain is drying up, so I don't know if we'll get any rain or cool temperatures. It's about out of steam. :(

good morning from livingston, montana~
ps iddee, montana is great!

WOW what a view!
-
right off the deck scott.....it is awesome! sit out with the morning coffee, so peaceful and quiet..... ;)
-
Just needs a beehive nearby!
-
four nearby.....will take a pic in the mornin!
-
WOOT! Good deal! Perfect!!!
Today is day 1 of bees day.. going to head to the outyards and start inspections.. Also have to fill out inspection sheets today, so it will be taking a while to get through all hives.. In the meantime I will also be pulling supers and taking note of colonies that are still weak.. If they have not caught on and kicked in gear by now they are not likely to, so I will be noting colonies that may need combined, or if the queen appears to be doing a good job perhaps moved to nucs.. Treat next month, so the bees who care for the bees who care for the bees that will be going into winter are strong and healthy.... Off to work!!
-
Scott- "Also have to fill out inspection sheets today
I sure would like to see how other beeks keep logs. This might be a nice addition to your website Scott.
I've taken tablets and graph paper with me before, then get into the hives and forget to jot down info. Or, I go get my logs from last inspection and I don't understand my own notes :eusa_doh:
I also like the idea of jotting down notes right on the lid of each hive. Then next spring, wash it off and start over.
-
Link to the inspection sheet I use is at the bottom of the page.. I set the printer to "fit" the image to the page, print in black and white and only print page 1..
;D

LOTS of plans today... and its raining... Won't complain, we needed it. Flow was starting to dry up. THis should jump start things again, at least for a short time. Kinda feels good to have coffee and watch the rain.
-
Went back up north to the bee yard i took 8 med supers of honey off of 4 days ago and took off 5 more. I put some wet supers back on, i think i might have jumped the gun on robbing them? the Sumac was in bloom all around and the girls are all over it. Last year i took over 20 med. supers off of the 12 hives there and so far 13 med. supers, i left some supers because they weren't capped and still filling them. This has and still is a crazy (weather) year, about two weeks behind other years. ??? Jack
-
Flow is dead.. not sure why, but feeders are out.. Went through 4 gallons of syrup yesterday.. HUNGRY bees... Wood cutting has started. I have a load on the trailer, so I am off to get that load split and stacked and get another load piled on... Supposed to be 68 today.. Not bad cutting weather.. 60 would be better!
-
I stayed home today while hubby and nephews went hunting. Did my first oxalic acid treatment yesterday all by myself. My hives now have some robbing issues so I have robbing screens on all four hives. After the oa treatment I reattached the screens. Later I went out to do some dead grass raking and notice a robbing frenzy going on in hive #2. Couldn't figure it out, walked up and took a closer look. Appears that I got the robbing screen attached about 1/4 inch too high and the robbers were scooting thru. Glad I caught that :) 8)
-
Load one split and stacked.. load two on the trailer, off to get that split and stacked.. coffee in hand.. AFTER I refill all the feeders..
-
good morning~
anyone else break down and turn the heat on in the house? i finally did yesterday afternoon, the temp in the house was about 62d F......30's at night, and not much above the 50's last couple weeks. frost on the ground this morning. i already don't like whats coming.
-
Yahooo---I didn't break down and turn on the air-conditioner in spite of the thermometer reaching 34.3 C (almost 85 F ) this afternoon. I've become so well adjusted to the temp that I didn't even sweat. But the night time temps have begun falling and I've started using a light blanket when I go to sleep.
-
......... :D
gee whiz ef, you didn't have to rub it in!
-
I'm with ya Riv, been building a morning fire for about a week now ~
-
Have heat set on 72, ac set on 78. Thermostat on auto. Don't know when they kick in.
-
well, the white stuff has landed. first SN*W of the season, and we are supposed to get 10 inches? .....
-
I've been following it (on the internet) across the continent from the Bering sea and Alaska. I hope it peters out before it reaches Vermont---my son and grandson-in-law are supposed to be there next week and I dread the thought of them having to drive in snowstorms.
Hopefully, you can sit back and enjoy its beauty from inside your warm home. Though I've lived through plenty of snows and don't look forward to them like I did as a child, I still love the squeaky sound it makes when I walk in the piles of fresh snow. That's something I get very infrequently here, in Israel.
-
good morning~
we escaped the 10" snowfall, but did receive a few inches. the bad part was some of it came with freezing rain. and it's cold, about 20 F. ef, i will be able to sit back and enjoy it's beauty from warmth inside AFTER i shovel the snow white beauty off my driveway and the deck.............. :D :D :D
-
about the same here.. COLD and snow is blowing everywhere.. We attempted to pick corn this morning, but the snow was getting into the Combines, and the wind was blowing the corn over the sides of the trucks when we tried to dump the grain carts into them... Had to call it off for a bit... I was wearing a t shirt wrapping hives, and sweating yesterday.. Sat outside last evening in my T shirt with my Rum and Coke and watched the sunset, trying to ease the aggravations of the day... this morning there is ICE in the water tank and a skiff of snow blowing about in the 30 mph winds..
I dont mind 30 mph winds.. I also dont mind 35 degree temps... What I do mind, is both together.. Might have to sell this spread and move further south.
-
Got down to 24 here in upper California, I don't remember when it was this cold this early for us. Sorry Mr. Wizard, I will have to ignore your Backoff Bugaloo, and get my hives winter fed and wrapped :D luuuuuv yuuuuuu ;)
-
Winter fed and wrapped doesn't include opening hives and moving frames around.
Quit changing the subject. Jaybird. :P :D
-
siiiiiigh okay.... rolling eyes :P :D
-
ROFL!!
-
;)
-
The last two days here were beautiful for this time of year. Temp went up to 65 degrees. Wife and I went to the park yesterday with the dog. The black lab needed one more swim for the year. Now its 38 with 35mph wind. lake snow predicted for tonight through tomorrow. I think we wont get to much. That blast of cold air from the west is going to stay north. I'm glad its to early for a cold front like that to move over the open water of lake Erie. We would get up to 2 to 3 ft of snow.
-
GOOD morning, all. Looking for 70 and sunny here today.

-
Jack, my post was in response to this one..... ""ok.... someone remind me to slap him when I go down there in the spring??""
-
Haaahahaha..., Jack, I can make a run through Missouri before I go that way. Then we can both slap him!! ;D
-
Thanks Scott, i didn't know what i was going to do? i'm a Black belt and my hands are deadly weapons and i could get in big trouble if i used them. So he's all yours. Thanks Buddy. O:-) Jack
-
Ahhh,, no, thats not good, we dont want to actually hurt him, well, maybe a little!
-
Just hit on the head. It's too hard to do any damage.
-
Is this thread a "Good Morning Post" or is it a chat box? :-\
-
Good morning, Ef. I think all the threads are turning into chat boxes as bee season winds down :)
-
Is this thread a "Good Morning Post" or is it a chat box? :-\
YES! ;D
23 this morning with a 12 mph wind.. Off to pick corn! Yall have a great day!
-
temp 27, wind 10mph, little snow.
-
good morning~
it's 15 F here this morning, this is our forecast for the next few days, cold, very cold, and FRIGID. the weather folks said we are getting temps we normally get in january, 20 and thirty degrees below normal. average temps for this time of year are in the forties.
anyone else getting this polar vortex?
-
Good morning, Ef. I think all the threads are turning into chat boxes as bee season winds down :)
I was looking forward to more activity in the "Laugh A LIttle" topic heading as winter season encroaches upon us.
Something like this:
When a man opens a car door for his wife, it's either a new car or a new wife.
Prince Philip
But you do a lot better Iddee
-
Like this??
"A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way." - Mark Twain
-
Absolutely! 8)
But we have to move it to the correct discussion group. And that's up to you.
As for the Good Morning Post---I'm disqualified (for the moment)-----I just fininshed my supper.
-
Super for breakfast :o, I couldn't live that way. :D Jack
-
Jack, when it's noon at your house, it's 8 PM at Ef's house.
-
HeHe, i knew that, i was just giving ef a shot.  Jack
-
Jack- "Super for breakfast , I couldn't live that way. Jack
Agreed Jack, but I love breakfast for dinner ;D
-
Jack, you remind me---when I was a little boy I would talk about the people on the other side of the globe living upside down.
Just imagine, eating your supper at breakfast time standing on your head :D ;D 8)
-
good morning~ OOPS......GOOD EVENING!
wrong thread....... :D :D :D
"Jack, you remind me---when I was a little boy I would talk about the people on the other side of the globe living upside down."
ef, jack always lives upside down, and jack i fix or eat whatever's left over in the fridge for breakfast! and like jen i sometimes eat/fix breakfast for dinner/supper....... 8)
it's going to be a looonnng winter with beeks not getting their bee fixes........ :D
-
Yup! scrambled eggs, jimmy dean sage sausage, and homemade biscuits ~ Eyum!
-
WHAT no gravy :o that's unamerican. >:( Jack
-
Jack- "WHAT no gravy that's unamerican. Jack
Biscuits Butter and Honey, HONEY! All that gravy gives me too much boom boom in the trunk :D
-
Good morning all.
I just finished my breakfast: Corn flakes and coffee.---together with my grandson who slept over in our house with his wife last night.
Today he is checking his hives for queen cell acceptance. He has over 50 hives in my neighborhood and replaced his last year's queens with ready-to-emerge queen cells two weeks ago. Hopefully he'll find that they've begun to lay.
-
Got my first freeze this morning at 31 degrees, looks to be a repeat of last winter only started early than usually.
Ken
-
22 degrees now. About 6 inches of snow.
-
He has over 50 hives in my neighborhood and replaced his last year's queens with ready-to-emerge queen cells two weeks ago. Hopefully he'll find that they've begun
Correction: I wasn't up to date on his divisions/increase. He checked 92 hives where he had introduced queen cells. Eighty four of them had laying queens. In the 8 hives where he didn't find eggs/young brood, he placed a frame with eggs, just in case the introduced queens hadn't been accepted. That's just over 90% success. Not bad for a 4th year beekeeper. So he had a good morning (and noon and afternoon) too.
Now I sign off for the Sabbath. Have a nice week-end.
-
Good deal Ef! Impressive results!
-
I thought i wanted to get up to 100 hives, but in 2012 i got up to 92 hives and with a 5 acre truck patch and taking care of cattle it became a full time job :o. I would still like to just to say i did, but with 92 hives i never got to go fishing :'(. Jack
-
WHAT!!?? No Fishing? Well... that means I will never hit 100 either!!
-
That’s why I put a limit on the number of hives I need. I can fish with 6 hives.
-
FISHING?! someone mention FISHING?!......... :D
i dunno, seems no matter what number of hives i have i can't seem to get to fishin' and my property is on a trout stream.......always something to do. i have to take a vacation to go fishin........... :D :D :D
-
You live up in gods country. I would go nuts if I had all those little lakes to fish. Its even better over in Minnesota., I could Ice fish 5 months. I wonder whats in those lakes north of Duluth Minnesota up to the Canadian border. That’s gods country. I think if I ever went up their I wouldn’t come back.
-
good morning ~!
ray, i don't care for lake fishing too much, i just stick to the rivers and creeks.......but i have fished up northern minnesota and wisconsin, and near the canadian border. it is beautiful up that way! i do like to fish for bass or pike occassionally with a fly rod, it's a lot of entertainment.
wow, today we are having a heat wave!................. :D

Rain here, and our 43 F. is on the plus side. :P
-
"on the plus side"................ :D
-
This morning started with rain and now (9:15 PM-local time) it's still raining on and off.
Since midnight last night we've received 85 mm (over three inches) of that valuable wet stuff that falls from heaven. Since the current wave of rains began on Sunday, we've collected 153 mm (6 inches). This rainfall has broken a lot of records (for heavy rains this early in the rainy season). Now I have to hope that the stream-bed (usually dry) near my home doesn't overflow and wash away ny grandson's hives. About 30 years ago an overflow there carried away something like 9 of my hives.
-
Socked in with thick fog today. I don't know why but I love foggy days, makes me want to bake and sip tea with a smidge of brandy. Or Baileys and coffee is yummy too
-
wow ef on the rainfall!
"Since midnight last night we've received 85 mm (over three inches) of that valuable wet stuff that falls from heaven."
funny, ours is the flip side, since this morning we have received 6 or 7 inches of that WHITE STUFF that falls from heaven............... :D
-
This rainfall has broken a lot of records (for heavy rains this early in the rainy season).
It's that "40 days and 40 nights" record you want to stay away from! ;)
-
good morning ~
two days ago, it was 40 degrees F, yesterday took a nose dive, and today's weather forecast is SUNNY and BITTERLY COLD......and that it is.....the temp here is about 0, wind chill factor? when it gets to zero, it really doesn't matter........... :D
-
good morning ~
wind chill factor? when it gets to zero, it really doesn't matter........... :D
LOL Cant argue with that!
-
a late good morning beeks,
hope everyone is enjoying the christmas weekend aftermath....... :D
it snowed here, snow coming in late yesterday and all night. about 6" or so, and cold, about 20D F. i am off to shoveling! sure enjoyed the reprieve we have had the past couple of weeks.
-
Its 52 degrees now. Big change coming tomorrow. Early next week heavy lake snow.
-
Starting to get into some low temps now as winter progresses, 22 last night. Have been planning to make my fondant this week, but holiday and birthdays are still in the thick of it with our family. We have one more party today, my father in laws 87 birthday, another gathering and feasting. Then I have to get serious about pushing the pie away LOL
-
Just to let you know what i think of sn_w, after it's quit i go out and write my name in it ;D close to where i'm shoveling it. That way if i have a heart attack and die they will know who it is. 8) Have fun Squirt. Jack

-
Sooo Jack! does that signature come out yellow?
If old Jack has been taking his vitamin C or drink orange juice his signature will be brilliant orange colored. My boys liked to spell their names in the snow so much.
-
On the farm we learn at a early age not to eat yellow sn_w 8), but liked to make it . Yep i do like orange juice in the mourning. ;D Jack
-
Well it's a chilly 72 degrees here in central Florida, slightly overcast and drizzle.
-
Its a balmy 73 in my house. The coal boiler is putting out some nice heat. Its a balmy 25 outside now with light snow. Temp will continue to drop thru the week with snow. Winter is trying to move in now. bring it on.
-
good morning beeks~
back in the deep freeze, 6 below this morning, windchill factors at 20 below. it's going to be a very long january.
-
Your in to big a hurry Squirt, it's still December.  Jack
-
i am in a hurry jack, i am in a hurry for january and two days left in december and cold weather to hurry up and go away...........in a big hurry............lol................ :D
-
I hear ya Sistah Rivah! :D We didn't get enough sun last summer with the fires and all, but we did get a nice long Fall season. We are just now getting into the 20' and 30's. I STILL don't have my fondant made, but I think the hives are okay. After all the holiday stuff and the last of the 5 december birthday celebrations on Sunday, and the last grand going home today... I think I shall lock my doors tomorrow, turn the phones off and dally in the kitchen with bee food ... yup, that's what I'm gonna do ;) 8)

I am with Mrs. River.. I am all geared up and ready for winter to be over, and like her, winter seems to JUST be starting.. Ice on the pond now, and its 7 degrees.. the wind is also just starting for the day.. I usually get up and do chores around 7 AM so there is not much wind to deal with yet.. When the sun hits the Prairie it starts blowing.. by 8:30 you want to be inside if its seven degrees, because the wind chill makes it a LOT colder...
No snow to write my name in yet, thankfully.. Also looks like some days upcoming that are to be in the thirties again... Hoping the temps dont even come close to last years temps!
-
i hear ya on the wind chill scott........... it's frigid here this morning......we do have snow on the ground, about 6".............

Its 25 now with light snow, About 10 inches on the ground. A warm up coming for the weekend with freezing rain back to heavy rain and back to colder temps by Monday with heavy snow.
-
We've had freezing temperatures, 26 F to 30F, constantly for two days. This morning it is 33 F and rising to 45 F. That's a long cold spell for us. We sometimes have temps in the teens, but our freezes are usually just a night thing with a warm up in the day. I truly don't know how you northerners take the loooooong winters.
-
Winter last a long time here. I wont see any major weather improvement till June. When it does warm up its short and mother nature will give me enough time to get ready for another winter. What makes it hard We get very little sunshine during winter. This season its been very mild.

What is the most grown crops there? Will winter wheat and other cover crops grow in your cold climate? June, dang June, holy moly June. We usually have some 100 degree F days by mid May. Our last freeze is usually in March. We sometimes have a freeze in the first week of April. If so, we refer to it as a "garden killer." Our next freeze is in November and sometimes December.
-
Last frost around may 25th . First frost early October. Corn and hay are very common crops in my area. Other parts of state grow different crops. My area is number one in dairy cows. The state is divided up into different regions. Every region has different weather patterns and different crops they grow. The regions east of lake Erie and Ontario get most of the snow. Off lake Erie up to 200 inches and off lake Ontario 400 inches because that lake is to deep to freeze over. I think the best part in the state to live is central NY finger lakes region. agriculture is very diversified here. Very little snow. Beautiful area to live. We got two of the deepest lakes in the country here, Seneca the deepest lake over 700ft deep and Cayuga lake over 400 ft. we have 3 other lakes up to 300ft deep. NY wont win any prize for weather but its one of the prettiest states in the country to visit. Every year we loose population because of our high taxes and lack of good paying jobs.
-
52 degrees now, high wind warning up to 65 mph. Tonight heavy lake snow up to 2' with lows down to 10 degrees and -20 by the end of next week. My bees are out going to the bathroom now.
-
In the 20'sF, white crap coming down, wind chill 6F :o. Now to talk myself into climbing on the tractor and putting out hay, feed grain, and check the water for the cows. Hmmm, better build a fire in the shop to keep the paint cans from freezing also. Jack
-
Same here Jack.. snowing, wind is howling, with wind chill its claiming -2 degrees here.. Be about ten days of teen temps before it looks like we have some 30 degree temps again.
Guess its time to play Diablo 3 for a few days. Stay inside and warm!
-
Good Morning, it was this time last year when I started painting the new doors to the bedrooms and bathrooms down the hallway, at my leisure. It's time consuming to paint doors and door frames and base boards, I got about half way done when 5 weeks of swarm catching interupted my painting. So now the weather has trapped me inside, and I will continue my arduous job of painting. Although I don't mind painting so much, especially when I have two days of venison stew waiting for dinner and I don't have to cook for a couple of days.

good morning..............
very, very frigid here, -12F, windchill at about -29F. i think i would rather have the white stuff falling than i would these bitter temperatures. i do not like being cooped up indoors!

Good Morning!

8 degrees now with 35 mph wind with heavy snow. Have about 18 inches on the ground now. more to come.
-
We are at 13 degrees with a 15 to 20 mph wind, sound better than yours but look at where you live and mine, will be like this for 5 days just like last year but a little better in the heat toward the end.
Ken
-
That’s cold for your area. I don’t know how you can deal with it down there.
-
Today it's only the 8th of January and so far in these 8 days we've received 55.4 mm (over 2" )of rain. It came with a storm and now we have a slight letup in the winds as the temps drop--and tomorrow the prediction is for more rain and more cold---much more. Jerusalem has had it's first snow of the year and more is expected as we go through a spell of unseasonably cold weather, down to 0 C (32 F).
I know that most of you will laugh at me, but for us, it's cold.
-
I'm in South Louisiana, about five miles from the gulf, and it was 26 degrees this morning. That's real cold for this here, as this is a major citrus growing area. Plus, Louisiana is always a high humidity zone, so 26 degrees with a 15 mph wind feels very cold.
-
Heat wave this morning. Currently 31* . Freezing rain last night and calling for possible 1-2 inches of snow today. I so dislike winter. Have the day off so will tackle my garage today! Need to clean so I can start winter projects.
-
Crazy8, I'm with you in my "love" for the winter. My wife was very provident when she reserved a short stay for us in a hotel on the shores of the Dead Sea---while the rest of the country is suffering from the cold (admittedly, not like yours in Indiana). We've gone to 429 meters below sea level (over 1400 ft) where the weather is clear and pleasantly warm. We arrived in the afternoon (in time to say good morning to you). Tomorrow, when we go out for a walk I hope to look at the flowers and look for bees enjoying the spring weather in the midst of the winter season. This is not the place for a comfortable visit in the summer, when the heat is almost unbearable.
-
Ef, you are such a plus for my continuing education. I did not realize the Dead Sea was below sea level. Thanks for being here.
-
I know Lazy! I read everything Ef writes ;)
-
Reply #482...... Tomorrow, when we go out for a walk I hope to look at the flowers and look for bees enjoying the spring weather in the midst of the winter season.
Tomorrow has come and gone... The walk took place but there were few flowers blossoming. The big disaappointment was that I couldn't find a single bee----not even one-----anywhere.
I guess the kilometers of surrounding desert serve as a very effective barrier that the bees can't cross in order to get to the gardens in this beautiful oasis. No beekeepers have brought hives to take advantage of the flowers and if there were any feral hives in the past, being unattended, they must have been destroyed by varroa.
-
Than GOD got sunshine this morning after 6 1/2 day of rainer clouds I am ready for this, even though it is 32 degrees it looks to be a beautiful day.
Ken

Good mourning everyone. still dry here in central California fog set in ten days ago an have not seen the sun. Went out yesterday and worked in the garden getting asparagus ready for spring and picked some fresh strawberries very unusual for this time of year. Blueberries are blooming its been warmer than normal all winter we have only had a few days with chill hours for the fruit trees. Good news is the doc has me breathing easier lately so i have been doing more. well have a good day all going to go outside and rune fruit trees and just enjoy the day.
-
Wishing you an 'all day' nice day Rod. We have had plenty of rain up here in upper northern California, maples are budding. Encouraged with all the rain that bees will have plenty of nectar this season :)
-
We haven't seen the sun up here in WEEKS. Starting to feel like a mushroom.......
-
:D
-
About as white as a mushroom at this point too ;D
Just skated home through another snow squall.
I need some vitamin D bad!
-
white as a mushroom and have the mushroom or muffin type thing going around the body, ya know, above the jeans or whatever...........that sorta spills out over the jeans.....a little............. :D
snowed here today, shoveled, shoveled shoveled, most important, get the snow off the dish satellite............
:D
-
Yep, nothing more annoying than having the snow piling up on the sat dish. Somebody needs to invent a heater to keep those things de-iced!
-
Good mourning all hope yesterday was good of everyone. I went out and started pruning fruit trees and only got a little done ran out of air came in the house and sat down. After getting second wind i went back out and did a little more . I use to do all pruning in one day now takes about a week due to all the time it takes to catch my breath. The good thing is i can still do the work just takes longer. I am trying to stay off of the oxygen bottle as long as i can doc said to try to push myself as much as possible to breath deep it will help keep my lungs clear better . Well have a good day all going back outside to work on the trees some more.
-
Low today 15 degrees, 4 inches of new snow last nigh with about 2 ft on the ground. I'm starting to get sick of this winter.
-
rodmaker, sorry you are having a rough go of it, take care, enjoy your weather. we are out of deep freeze, but did snow the last couple days, about 20d f now. the sun is shining, and we are supposed to get a warm up in the next few days.
-
Keep After it Rodmaker! If the weather is good, a comfy lawn chair nearby in the shade, with a cold drink. Take it one step at a time!
-
We haven't seen the sun up here in WEEKS. Starting to feel like a mushroom.......
Same weather here. Lake Erie 90 percent frozen over. The lake snow should start to shut down soon.
-
going to be 50 today, 60 tomorrow, night temps still near freezing. Got astromenda out of the computer but Charter's internet service is not fully loading anything, and until they fix it doesn't do much good to get online. Going to hit post, it might get there. Ya'll have a good day.
-
What? the 28th day of January and weatherman say's 68F to 70F in my area :o. I must be dreaming.? Jack
-
hehe yep, supposed to be 50 here!!
-
You people are haveing better temps than we are here, 30 this morning up to a steaming 53 today.
Ken
-
Went to bed at 2am, temp -5 up at 730, 2 degrees. Bright and sunny now. I'm going try and start the diesel tractor today. The driveway is getting deep with snow. More snow coming soon with colder temp. Looks like another long cold winter here.
-
46 degrees and very heavy fog today. Yesterday the girls were out and about finding tan collared pollen coming back loaded. Like Jen have dandylions blooming with warm temps.
-
Hi Rod :) I just hope that anything blooming this year will have nectar to offer. My bees had to work real hard last summer to find any. Maybe my bees will then stay out of the red syrup hummingbird feeders >:(
-
Good mourning, brrrrr,16F with wind chill 2F, high today 33F, glad i put out enough hay for the cows yesterday to last a couple of days. Weatherman says 50's tomorrow, this is hard on bees and i've lost 19 hives so far out of 75 (mostly from robbing),watching the hives on days in the fifty's and seeing normal looking activity, then on a 60's day raise the lid to check stores and find out they've been robbed out. :o isn't a good feeling. Groundhog says 6 more weeks of winter :'(, think i'm going to do alot of groundhog hunting this spring. 8) Jack
-
Same here Jack, Shubenacadie Sam saw his shadow! :'(
-16 C (3 F) here right now.
-
Looks like we're having steady rain for a couple of weeks. Bring On The Rain! it will be nice to have blooms with nectar this spring and summer :) 8)
-
3F this morning and 18 inches of snow.
Where are my snowshoes at?
-
53F around midnight, down to 30F now on the way to about 20F in the morning. A light dusting of snow for a short time today. Brisk northwest winds. I'm glad I don't work outside!
-
53F, me and Perry are wearing shorts in that weather!
-
the storm rolled through and left a lot of white stuff behind.. started out blowing directly out of the south, and by the time it ended a day later it was blowing out of the north.. nothing was safe.. I have 10 inches of snow INSIDE my barns. Hives are all iced SHUT tight, but its also well below freezing, so I will leave them bee for a few days.. looks like WINTER arrived.
-
53F, me and Perry are wearing shorts in that weather!
Don't forget the flip flops! I pushed snow to make it to the highway this morning. Took an extra 20 min. to get to work. The plows have hardly had to work this year, I would have thought they would have been out early this morning.
-
-3 at 7am, looks like a nice day 10 degrees for the high. where can you go and get nice weather like this. :)
-
There are a few nice asylums for folks that like that kind of weather.  ;D
23 F. here, going to 60 F. Sunday. That's the weather for sane people. ;D
-
The county doesn't do much snow removal when the schools are all closed. Just the main roads around here. Found them all parked at the coffee shop wasting my tax money!
-
Iddee- "There are a few nice asylums for folks that like that kind of weather.
:D Agreed!
-
Good Morning! Giving my buzzy ladies some sugar today. Retrieved my infrared thermometer last night from my bee tool tub and discovered it's that time of the season to clean, organize and stock it up for the new season...
-
A high of -13 C (8 F) here today. We are having a prolonged cold snap at just about the worst time beekeeping wise. They have had a fairly mild fall/ winter up till this past month and now I'm worried about them getting stuck away from what's left for stores.
-
Curious situation for sure Perry. What's your plan of attack? Would you shovel down to the lid and then put some fondant in real quick like?
-
Nothing I really can do Jen, it's way too cold to even think about cracking a cover.
-
Bummer! A true test of patience for sure ~
-
We had a beautiful coating of hoar frost this morning (tues that was) in Mich. Got down to around 0F, but still on the good side :D
-
Photo Op :)
-
I didn't get any photos of hoar frost on the bat ;D
-
:) I hope not! bat should be snuggled in a corner sleeping somewhere in your attic... :)
-
Watching the mourning news and seeing what the people up north are going through makes me hate that white crap more >:(. Been seeing post from my buddy perry, but the squirt must be shoveling that crap or to tired to post as much :-\. I quit poking them about the white stuff, it's not funny any more and they have more coming. :o When it does start to melt off, there will be flood waters to deal with :'(. For my area (knock on wood) we've had less of the white crap and ice that i can remember in several years 8). Mid to late Feb. the Maples and Willow trees start budding out and the bees start flying in the upper 50F days, and usually things keep getting better, but there'er calling for more cold weather coming from Canada the rest of this week and next. :'( Jack
-
Mother in law says most people up there have plowed themselves into a corner. they have no where else to PUSH the snow to.. One neighbor has a salamander running in the driveway trying to MELT the berm of snow before they get the next wave..
-
................... :D
jack you can poke fun at me about the white stuff, i have been a little mia, i lost a good friend to cancer last week, was helping the family out and then the wake and the funeral. hard on the ol heart.
we were hammered yesterday, started out sleet and rain, big pellets of sleet, then switched to snowing, more sleet, more snow. i am not even going to shovel the driveway off today, it's too darn cold, and besides, don't want to shovel the snow off to leave a skating rink i would fall down on in my driveway........ :D
-
Jack- "Mid to late Feb. the Maples and Willow trees start budding out
I remember quite a few years ago, we were well into spring, the trees leafed out and buds about to bloom, we got a freak storm for two nights, two feet of snow. It was too much weight for the trees with being leafed out and the snow. We could hear trees breaking all thru those two nights. Broken trees everywhere.
-
Our heaviest snows always come in March, so I'm not making any early plans. I think Riverbee has been absent because the snow is up over the cell phone and broadband towers. :o :D
-
Squirt,I have a school buddy and neighbor that has cancer and told he had 3 months. :o I need to call him or go see him, but don't know what to say to him? He is taking chemo and is sick afterwards and i don't know when to call or visit him? I try to put myself in his place to see what i would want people to do, but haven't come up with a good answer? ??? I'm sure some of you have been through something like this, Would appreciate any help. Jack
-
"I think Riverbee has been absent because the snow is up over the cell phone and broadband towers. :o :D"
..........ZING!................. :D
jack, my good friend was fighting it the last year and a half. chemo, etc., remission, came back. 4 weeks ago the mayo clinic said he had maybe 3 weeks.
i would suggest talking to his wife, find out when a good time to come by is. there is nothing you can say really, to him or the family, it gets awkward, but spend the time now. offer your support, and visit with him. talk about all the good times you shared, etc.
-
Yes Riv, those are nice words there. Jack, I have been thru the cancer recovery process. River is right about consulting with the wife on when would be the best time to stop by. Don't be afraid to ask him how he is? He will let you know, men especially need to talk about it. In a strange way, it helps make sense of it all.
I will say this... It's much better on your conscious and your friends conscious to face the awkwardness, than to not stop and see him at all. It's a little uncomfortable right at first, but then conversation just picks up and the two of you will talk and chuckle, maybe even have a good laugh. When you leave his house and get into you car and drive away, you will be left with a wonderful warm spot in your heart that you did the right thing.
Personally, I didn't mind talking to my friends about what I was going thru, it actually helped relieve built up fear and tension.
Here's another real nice thing you can do. Ask his wife if you can bring a casserole or dinner for him and her (or the family). Ask what it is that he can eat. A large pot of homemake chicken noodle soup is alway a hit with cancer patients. It's easy on their traumatized stomach, and it's comforting to eat, and smells delicious. It was a great help in my household because hubby didn't know how to cook much. Taking care of your friend and the one taking care of him is important.
-
Jack, after many of visits to Hospice in the last few years. The easiest thing to do is talk, talk about anything they or you want to. It may seem awkward at first, but believe me it's good for the heart and soul. It will mean more to you and your friend than you can ever imagine. :)
-
Ditto Curt
-
I lost my best friend 13 years ago (same age, married the same year, etc etc.) to a stage 4 brain tumor.
Just be yourself Jack, it's who you are, and who they want you to be. Don't "act" any differently.
-
For those of my bee friends on this forum who have dealt personally with cancer, or have lost a dear one to cancer ~ I send you all the blessings I can muster ~hugs~
-
"The easiest thing to do is talk, talk about anything they or you want to. It may seem awkward at first, but believe me it's good for the heart and soul. It will mean more to you and your friend than you can ever imagine. :)"
"Just be yourself Jack, it's who you are, and who they want you to be."
what curtchann said, what perry said...........
talking and laughing and even some crying is good medicine for the heart and soul. both ways.
and to what jen said, the wife or the family might not ask for help. offer to drive him to chemo or go with him, send some dinners over to him, anything works.
don't find yourself with any regret later on......
-
Lost my best friend and cousin a few years ago to a brain tumor.. we talked a lot, I was always up seeing him.. He was a week past his 50th birthday..
We talked about everything, and often, we talked about doing things.. Getting him out of there, setting him up in the front of my store fixing computers. i could do all the running for him.. had pictures of the store, so we made plans to remodel... We both knew he wasnt coming home, but it was sure fun to talk and make plans...
I have another cousin now fighting cancer. I always ask the news when i see him. he tells me, then we start talking cars, and engines, and drag racing.. he is one of the few people I can actually TALK engines with.. When i start rattling off cam profiles and runner sizes his eyes dont glaze over with a lack of understanding or care, they light up with understanding and excitement.. I honestly dont know if we will ever get the chance to build the engines we talk about, but the point is, he likes it, i like it, we both enjoy it, and when he is gone, I will miss it more than is imaginable....
Just talk, be supportive... yeah, it hurts. No, you dont want to be there. its HARD, but its what friends do.
-
Good morning Scott, it is apparent that you are a special person. It's grand of you to spend so much time with a terminal cancer patient, especially a relative. My wife and I were both late in life babies in small families and my cousins are all third and fourth and as such, I don't even know their names. My immediate family is my wife, two sons and one daughter-in-law and two grandsons. We can have our family reunion in my Escalade. I do so admire large families and all the support that they lend to each other.
Good on you and stay the course.
-
i dug up the 'good evening' thread, so decided to dig out the 'good morning' thread! wow, we haven't posted to this since february?!
a late good morning, and wishing all a good day today!
cooler weather here yesterday and today. yesterday we received some much needed rain that came with some light shows, and a big crash in the woods........as long as it's in the woods and not laying across my lawn or driveway............
i see the bees working the perennial gardens pretty good, we have a prolific amount of red bee balm, and many other plants that they work, but i love the red bee balm!
-
good mornin beeks!
it has been october weather here for the past few days, not much above 6o, lots of rain, all day rain for the past few days. this morning was a chilly 5oish. today is supposed to be rain free and maybe hit 72 and sunny. know many of you are tired of the rain, and some are in so much need of rain.
have a great day everyone!
-
A lot of rain here this summer. This week its been very hot and humid. Big change coming by Monday. Day temps in the 70s and lows down in the 50s. Those are perfect temps for me to handle.
-
..... and some are in so much need of rain.
Our last drop of rain here was in April. If we're lucky, we should see the start of the rainy season sometime in September. But, then again, it's just as likely it could wait until October or even November. The real rains usually wait until December or January. AHHHHH, that get's me to day dreaming of next year's bee season.
-
efmesch,,being an old farm boy, farmer, how in the world can you grow anything over there with so little rain??? 5 to 6 months without a drop of rain :o even if you water every thing you have to have a water source from somewhere? and with that little rain (water from heaven O:-)) how do you have a water source to draw from ? This is probably a dumb question, but i've wondered about this when you mentioned so little rain fall before. Just curious ??? Jack
-
1. The quantitiy of water that we get as rain in most parts of the country (excluding the Negev desert) is similar to the amounts received in "normal" countries---the big difference is that instead of being distributed around the year, we get it in half a year. Much of this water is stored in assorted ways (reservoirs, aquifers) and is used during the dry season..
2. The local flora have their life cycles in sync with the rainy and dry seasons. When I taught Biology, this was a topic that received a lot of attention and explanation---too involved to elaborate here, but I'll simply say that different plants have evolved different solutions.
3. Most local wild plants complete their life cycles during the rainy season and by early summer have died. The local plants that thrive (flower and fruit) in the summer have very deep root systems.
4. Plants that have been introduced here from reqions with an "all-year" distribution of rain can't manage without irrigation (example: cotton) and for them we have developed many irrigation solutions---possibly the most famous is "drip irrigation".
5. Within the past few years new methods of desalinating sea water have come into use. A goodly percentage of our water, used for home and agricucltural use, comes from our ample supply of sea water.
6. In spite of all that I've said, you should see how brown most parts of the country look at the end of the summer.
-
good mornin'!
fall like weather continues here, i think it's about 53 degrees F here this morning and the wind is blowing a pretty cool breeze. last night thunderstorms rolled in, and more rain. we are supposed to hit 67 F later today. feel lazy this morning and am lamenting over warm weather and sunshine...... sure don't want summer to end!
-
Thanks for clearing that up for me efmesch, we have plants like that like Alfalfa, i've heard that there roots go 30ft. into the ground. ? Jack
-
Whoopie! We've had our first rain of the season.....It was April 12th we last saw drops of rain. May, June, July, August, and September were totally bone dry. Now, on October 7th, our long anticipated "rainy season" has begun.
My automatic rain bucket measured a respectable 25.8 mm (just over an inch) of rain that fell in the last 24 hours.
Here's praying that it is a good start for a good rainy season---respectable amounts of rain, falling at reasonable rates so that the soil can absorb the moisture, well spaced so that between the rains the plants can soak up the water and the sunlight and grow well, producing bumper crops. Of course, a nice flowering season with plenty of nectar would also be appreciated.
-
EF,
I know the feeling. We are in a light drought now, about a month, but there have been summers that killed every tree and blade of grass and you wonder if it will ever come back.
Hurrah for You!
-
It is a nice morning here. It's about 60 degrees F with zero wind. It is wonderful coat free weather. There is a forecast for rain tomorrow. Oh how I hope that comes true.
We have only received on rain since April. It was about two-inches and it was months back. We had a drought busting spring, but we have slipped back into the drought. Our lakes and shallow aquifers did refill and recharge and that was a big plus. Most of our lakes are still in good condition. But, we need rain now.
-
Beautiful morning here. Temp was 47 when I awoke, sunshine aplenty and the leaves are changing a little bit more each day. I love the Hudson Valley in the fall, colors of the tree are amazing. If you have never traveled to the Hudson Valley, you should add it to your bucket list.
-
hey les, never been to new york, the other half has, ny city actually, he took his niece there as a college graduation present for a long weekend, i didn't want to go........(not a big city person) :-[
but those two together travel well and are a handful!!!!......... :D

I woke up today at 5am. Looked outside, 2 inches of snow. I just got rid of that stuff a few months ago. its back

I know Ray, no snow yet here, but it Cold! My bones remind me of that everyday. I wasn't finished with summer this year
Rrat ~ I love your dog! He's just big, and dorky, and cute. I love his markings too :)
-
"Did you ask his permission to post that pic?"
........... :D rat????........... :D
weather has been unseasonably warm here, about 65 F here today, beautiful day and weekend!
-
A chill is in the air here today, temp. 56F with slow light rain with heavy rain coming in tonight and tomorrow.Guess i'll spend the day in the shop cleaning frames and spraying BT on them. Jack
-
Good Morning Jack :) We had our first snow flurry last evening. It's 9:30 this morning at 35 degrees. Too cold for this time of year. Hoping for a warm couple of days to organize my bee shed :)
-
I had 60 for a high today. Next 3 days the same weather. 30 day forecast, above normal temps. I love it. My bees love it too.
-
Not to bad today, 49 this morning and got to 74 for a high today, was going to do some outside work but got a call from the church about a water leak, only a over flowing toilet that the flapper didn't close on but a lot of water to take the wet and dry vac to.

So far the predictions about the El Nino in the Pacific influencing the rain patterns here have been holding. We've been having nice rains since the season began (first rains in October). Nice quantities of rain with nice sunny spaces between them. October gave us over 67 mm and so far this month we've had over 59 mm. At the moment, the rain is coming down at a nice pleasant pace---enough to warrant an umbrella, but not enough to cause any flooding. The forecast is for continued rains over the next few days.
I'm all for it.
The bees have worked hard this summer and deserve a few days of vacation inside their hives.
-
Had one and a half inches of rain yesterday mourning, then it started raining again around 10:30pm. Rained off and on all night in spurts hard and still doing it this morning, water standing everywhere :o. Going to have to buy a bigger rain gage, rain off and on rest of the week ???. I think i heard that one inch of rain would make one foot of that white crap :o thank the lord it's coming down as rain. Hey perry, how's the weather up there. ;D Jack
-
We're rained in here. Doesn't look like it will end anytime soon, either. What's odd is how warm it is. We still haven't had a killing frost. Cucumbers are still in bloom and the girls are bringing in goldenrod pollen still.

I'm posting this at night but this was the Good Morning I got today. It has been raining for two days and the creeks were up. I guess Thor was looking for high ground!
-

Our dog Copper was whining during the night, so I got up and went to the back door figuring she needed to go out. I called for her and waited a minute but she didn't show up. When I went to get back in the bed, there she was in my spot next to my wife! She almost never goes into our room. :D
-
She played you like a fiddle, Perry ;D
-
Love the pic of Thor Neil ;D
Perry... We want to hear the rest of the story... like did Copper get to stay in bed the rest of the night?
-
Our Katy loves when it's nap time with her main man especially during a cold snap

Finally got that killing frost last night. Killed off the last of the garden. Still warm enough during the day for the girls to fly. Trying to get a large enough stack of wood to make my sweetie smile-actually a rather ambitious goal. :)
-
High of 36F with rain and white crap flurries, :o a little ground cover, but the ground is to warm for it to stay. Expecting highs in the upper 50's all next week. Having trouble getting myself to cut two cords of wood for the work shop, getting lazy i guess. ??? Jack
-
Sure enough long john weather here. If the clouds clear off might get some sun.
-
Good Morning,
Having clear days with highs in the 60's. Girls are flying every afternoon. This is really weird for November but I'm not complaining. Must be some of that El Nino effect. Hope all is well with you all!
-
;) morning!
-
Back at yah. :) Jack
-
Coffee in hand, the SUN is OUT TODAY!!!!! Supposed to rain tonight again though... BUT, today, I can finally get some hives moved!!! AFTER, the coffeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
-
good morning............
it's 54 d F here, feels like spring! unusually warm for us this time of year, by about 50 degrees.... C:-)
thunderstorms rolling through, at least i am not shoveling out the driveway!
-
Same here Mrs. River! Was cutting wood in a t shirt... THunder storms moved north of my place earlier... Enjoyed watching them flash and hearing them rumble in the distance.. not often you can do that in a long sleeved shirt with a rum and coke in hand as November comes to a close.
-
hey scott, shortly after i posted rain started and i thought a really hard rain........
funny, i thought wow, that's a really hard rain fall (could hear it on the roof) just boinking the heck out of the roof and the deck ..........
DUH!!!!
looked out to see marble sized hail coming down!
i wore shorts all day...........!
-
After 65 day from last measurable rain fall, praise the LORD we are getting some today and may get more tomorrow, you may say that not to long, but here it is for it was only a 1/2 inch and that was after 44 days of no rain than. Oh and lost My last bee hive yesterday, they did not make a queen or the one that was never got mated, witch I think what happen. They sure made a lot of honey for me. There was very little honey left in the hive and I knew this from a few weeks back from inspection and had been feeding 2 to 1 sugar now for about a month.

Good Morning!
Hi Ho Hi Ho it's back to work I go. (Monday for me.)
Yesterday's weather was in the 60s and sunshine. Put sugar cakes on hives in an out apiary. I am worried about 2 of them. The fall has been so warm, the hives lift light, very light.
I saw bright orange pollen being brought in. All was calm.

Today I can finally say GOOD morning----after our long dry summmer, wnter weather has finally come. Winter here means rain. Up north, in the Galilee, there have been abundent quantities of rain---up around 100 mm (about 4 ") and there has even been an acccumulation of about 20 cm of sn_w on Mount Hermon. In my neighborhood we got a bit over 6 mm and hope that we'll get some more before the rain clouds move on.
-
Good to hear from you, efmesch. Very glad to hear you are getting some precipitation.
-
It's still coming---we've reached 16.6 mm and the clouds aren't dry yet :occasion14:
-
EF,
Good news. Maybe this can bode well for next spring.
-
The sun came out this afternoon, after the weather system moved on. The total amount of rain we got here (in my neighborhood) added up to 26.2 mm--(just over an inch).
For the first real rain of our winter season it was a nice one--not too much, not too little, not too fast. The thirsty ground has already absorbed it all. The only "reservation" I have is that it came about two months later than expected. If the rains come regularly till the end of the rainy season (April- May), we should have a nice honey crop. But the if is only iffy. Any rain that falls here is appreciated.
-
we have been in a frigid deep freeze the past few days with windchills topping out at -39 d F. wow today we have a warm up, about 10 d F and tomorrow i think i will wear shorts........... ;D supposed to be in the mid 30's, maybe even 40 d F. we have a fair amount of snow cover, about 8-10 inches on the ground with some snow in the forecast. i don't mind the snow......well yet........lol..........but i sure don't like the frigid temps. i am very cautious anywhere there is ice cover......with the new hardware in my legs, my muscles are not as flexible yet (getting there), so i really don't want to find myself with a ground level view of things...... :)
i checked my hives last weekend, and did a heft test. i use a stethoscope to listen through the winter wrap. all are well, and all are still quite heavy. it is always rewarding to listen to the bees in cluster. also helps me gauge where they are in the hive in a double deep. most are or seem to be between the first and second deep, so not yet in the top deep.
i am worn out from all the honey pouring and candle making, deliveries and running around. i am taking a break today and clean up all the wax spots on my kitchen floor :P
-
g'morning riverbee,
Is it safe to assume if you are wearing shorts in 30 degree weather that you don't shave? :)
-
lol neil, i do shave!................(https://worldwidebeekeeping.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1056.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft373%2Friverbee1%2FHappy%2520Holidays%2520Merry%2520Cmas%2Fwinksm6bq0jf.gif&hash=8f2fabd3a401b5333b00f78401c12f85783a6f86)
-
RB,
Sorry about that. :)
You northerners are tough cookies! :)
-
dunno about being 'tough cookies' neil. the older i get the less i tolerate cold temps........but, i also complain about hot humid days during summer months, don't like that either........lol..... :P
-
I participated in my bee club's annual Christmas cookie exchange and auction last night. There wasn't a huge crowd there. Proximity to Christmas and weather always make a difference. I picked up some good Christmas presents and beekeeping equipment at great prices. The money raised goes toward youth scholarships. Members bring in beekeeping related items to donate. The last several years we have had a professional auctioneer donate his services. He has really made a big difference.
-
B12/13,
Sounds like a great event. Another example of how an active club can be a force for good. :)
-
True, Neil.
I noticed that the purple finches were working my Vitex tree over. They are eating the seeds that are still on the tree and that tree is loaded. That's great! I hope they spread the seed, via digestive system, all over the neighborhood!
-
Went out to check in the girls this morning. All hives still alive, and seem to still be down towards the bottom of the hives. Wind has been terrible here- broke the snow fence in three different places
. I hope the tar paper is helping a little in this regard, as I did not get to put up any other kind of wind barrier this year...
-
good morning all!
how is everyone liking the daylight savings time change? arizona doesn't observe it, i am moving there.............. :D
i don't like it, now it's going to be dark when i am grilling dinner and will have to use a lantern. i'd rather stumble around in the morning in darkness then stumble around in the dark at 4:00 pm........ :D
-
I always thought it was nonsense but I'm told there is real science behind it. There is a growing movement in the country to get rid of it- if so, I know how I'll vote. :)
-
the history from what i just googled.......is used to save energy and make better use of daylight......to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening.
make better use of daylight?.......... :D not sure how this saves energy either.
on my planet, DST can go away! as i post daylight left and i'm using more energy turning lights on......... :D
-
I don't pay no mind to what time it is unless one of us has an appointment to be some where When your retired you can do that and the cattle don't care either ! I will miss the news on tv for a while until i get used to DST but, that's alright now i'm sick of all the political adds and all the fussing and bragging anyway. Hey B13 did your sister get down to the apple sale? Jack

One more day of political ads, Jack. Hang in there.
No, my sister didn't make it down. She had a bad cold and wasn't up to the event. I was at a state beekeeping meeting in central Kansas. I think if I went, she would have gone along.
-
We have snow moving in this evening. It's supposed to snow all night. I'M NOT READY!!!
-
Supposed to get here tomorrow! Woo Hoo! :)
-
how's the snow thing going?............. :D
-
Our weatherman said we had "snow pellets" Monday morning. We were in Houston at the time, so we missed them, whatever they are.
Somebody needs to tie Riverbees legs to the chair so she'll stop with the snow dancing.

Ended up with just a dusting. I was a bit disappointed. :'(

;D
we are scheduled for 3 to 4 inches of snow tonight
-
Hey Squirt, keep that white crap up there! We had a light cover the first week or last week of Oct.? But 2 to 3 inches last week :o this has me worried because it has started to early :-\ Our bad stuff usually starts around the 10th of Jan.!!! I put out round hay bales last week when the ground was covered with the new Kabota 60hp tractor and the sun was out and i had to open the side windows on the cab? it got hot in there and i didn't have the heater on  think maybe i'm going to like this Orange tractor after all !
-
jack you just enjoy that tractor, and if ya get buried in the white stuff, that kubota will most certainly dig you out.......... :D
-
WOW it is cold! Water in the back bathroom froze up... supposed to be -19 tonight.. heres to hoping it starts warming up after that and that we have an early spring!
-

We are cold, but nothing like what you folks are experiencing up there. Stay warm.

Time to revive an old post...
as there isn’t much discussion of bees here lately, let’s at least chat here....
Today I get to attend a virtual piano recital for my kids. Gotta love the times we live in.
Hope everyone is doing well and those that have weather like mine today - May you get outside and enjoy it!!
-
We are doing well in South Texas. We've been in a bit of a drought, down 12" at the end of last year, and another 6" at the beginning of May. We are catching up a bit, finally. The small showers have been a nice relief.
I'm going out later today to fit a custom-built robber screen on one of my long langs, and then swapping out fully drawn frame for one the bees haven't touched.
-
You mentioned you needed ten hives - are you there already, or still building up?
-
Only 8. I've posted more detail under General Beekeeping.
