Title: Guard Goose
Post by: The15thMember on October 15, 2023, 05:01:22 pm
My little sisters are thinking about getting a guard goose for their chicken flock.  Does anyone have any experience with guard geese?  Any advice you could offer them?

Yes. They can outrun your siblings until they are 8 or 10 years old and bring a blood blister on their bare legs. I always carried a broomstick around the yard until I was about 10. Never hurt but 1. I broke his neck. Good eating and proud of the accomplishment.

The Romans used geese to alert them to the presence of the Celts.  They still hold a parade for the geese every year.  If raised together from hatching, I would think they would be very protective of the chickens.  I raised several, from hatching, along with some ducks years ago.  They flocked together like one big happy family. I am not sure if one sex is more aggressive over the other.
