Two calls today. Caught one, but let the lady keep her 4 bees at the other. LOL.

Man called today and sent me to Asheboro for a swarm. As soon as I got that one boxed and hit the road, he gave me the address for another one. First one about 2 1/2 lb. Second one about 4 lb.

This is the swarm that landed underneath my swarm trap. I have the trap sitting on top of an old wooden play structure. I spotted activity and after a closer look found that they almost made it to the trap! I think I got her in the trap and they are working their way in. It was a good sized swarm.

I had two swarms issue from my yard on Sunday.  One was a prime swarm that landed WAY up in a pine tree.  They left yesterday around 3:30 PM.  The other one is an afterswarm from a split, and they are still sitting up in the top of a dogwood.  They were heavily investigating and discussing a trap I put out just for them, but they got off of the idea yesterday afternoon, even though they don't seem to have come up with anything better.  :-X  I don't really have time to mess with them today, but maybe I can try to lure them down tomorrow.

I slapped together a Russian scion quick with the help of my sister.  We hung it up on Wednesday, I guess it was.  (I barely know what day it is today, I've been REALLY busy this week.)  I stuck some old brood comb to it and baited it with some LGO, but nothing doing.  It also didn't catch a swarm that I came home to find out of reach in another tree in the apiary yesterday, so. . . .   :-X

Well, after sitting up there for almost a week, the dogwood swarm apparently FINALLY made a decision, because my sister just saw them fly off to the east.  They had not built any comb on the tree, so they must have just been discussing options all this time.

After being there for so long, I can't imagine they have enough honey left in their stomachs to build comb.  Assuming they didn't find a home that comes furnished, how will they build comb when they get there?  Can bees draw comb on stomachs full of nectar?  Or does it have to be honey?

It's proving to be a swarmy year for me.  I have another afterswarm up in the pine tree.  They issued pretty late, around 4:30 PM.  I typically have swarms issue around noon.
