Jerry Hayes – AHB; What We Know & What We Have Learned
• AHB videos.
• NASA study, incorporating seasonal weather conditions, etc, and indicated that the southern interior of BC could potentially harbor AHB perennially.
• The greatest danger is the seasonal import (in spring) of AHB that can be a problem through the season. Second threat is the increase of urban beekeeping where beekeepers may acquire bees from unknown sources including swarms.

They pulled a feral colony from a shipping container in the port of Vancouver that had gone thru the Panama canal in 1995. A full African colony may not be able to survive but how African and aggressive could they get before the colony loses its overwintering ability? This is the main reason the border is still closed to the unrestricted importation of bees.

Hey Keith. At our AGM we were told that Alberta is trying to flex its muscle by saying that the Feds don't have a "Bee Act", and that importation is Provincial jurisdiction, so the Feds have no say. Capa and CFIA both voted no to border opening because of too much risk, but that doesn't seem to be how Alberta (and some degree Manitoba) see it.
It's gonna get interesting (and ugly) maybe.

But the guy's at the boarder and customs officers are fed's and enforce federal regulations. So they will have to take that one to the supreme court. And if there is a loop hole they will pass legislation to fix it. We will end up with what ever Ontario wants. The other provinces have no political power other than a little also from Quebec.
