Title: How did you choose your screen name?
Post by: iddee on February 25, 2015, 05:28:44 pm
When the internet was just getting started, my son wanted to sign me up. He said, "you need an ID other than your own name for a screen name".
So I said, use ID. It was taken. Idee was taken. Iddee was free. I have used it ever since.

Well, I got tired of everyone thinking I was Tom Magnum, so I thought I better straighten everyone out and decided to just use my real name. :P

I've been Tay to everyone who knows me, with the exception of some very stubborn family members (yep, mom and dad included) for the last 26 years.  And I'm a lady.
Apparently, another Tay considers herself a lady, too...thus the extra y.  lol

great thread iddee! enjoying!

riverbee......
the short version................ :D  i live on a river, and i love rivers, and i keep bees........soooo riverbee!

the long version........... :D

About riverbee:

ABOUT BEES:
“What is this dark hum among the roses?
I have found them-haven’t you?---
Stopped in the very cups of the flowers, their wings
a little tattered-so much flying about, to the hive,
then out into the world, then back, and perhaps dancing,
should the task be to be a scout-sweet, dancing bee.
I think there isn’t anything in this world I don’t admire.
bend close to study and
understand what is happening.  It’s not hard, it’s in fact
As instructive as anything I have ever studied.  Plus, too,
it’s love almost too fierce to endure, the bee
nuzzling like that into the blouse
of the rose.  And the fragrance, and the honey, and of course
the sun,  the purely pure sun, shining, all the while, over
all of us.”

---Mary Oliver

ABOUT RIVERS:
"It is those we live with and love and should know who elude us……now, nearly all those I loved and did not understand when I was young are gone, but I still reach out to them.
...Then in the arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the big Blackfoot river and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise.
Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.  The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time.  On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops.  Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
I am haunted by waters."

---Norman MacLean “A River Runs Through It”

remember, you asked!

The first house I built for my wife, started out well. Foundation dug, poured, etc.. Sill plates down, floor, and walls went up.. Rafters put on, roof done, windows in..   all of these things, my wife saw DONE when she came home from work.. and then came the wiring, and plumbing, as well as the ducting for the heating and AC system..   She could no longer see anything being done, about ten days after I set the breaker panel in place and began running wires, she was in tears. REAL tears, and as angry as I have ever known her to be..  I was called a Lazy Ba$&^@% among many other things..   I packed up my stuff and left, notified the lawyer we were separated and I wanted papers drawn up for divorce.
In the meantime, the wife hired someone to finish the house..   He told her, the wiring was almost done, a weeks worth of work he didnt need to do..  She asked about the plumbing, he told her it was done, she asked about the ducting, it was all assembled and ready to hang, shouldnt take him more than a week to wrap up what had already been started.

Back then, Cell phones were big things rich people owned, so she ended up coming to the dealership I worked at, I asked her to leave..  she started a campaign of notes, flowers etc, all the things a guy might do to catch a girl..  I was quite annoyed, but eventually, i agreed to meet her for dinner. She took me to my favorite restaurant, McDonalds....
For the first time,  the ONLY time, the LAST time, she said she was sorry, she was wrong.....   I wish I could have a tape recorder back then....
I  went back.  Building her barn, the gun shop, the riding arena, etc, etc..  I would occasionally take a break, and she would inevitably ask if I had permission from the boss to take that break. I would say no, I'm just being a lazy Ba$#@&^, and we would laugh...
When she convinced me to get my own bees, she decided I wasnt a lazy ba$#&^% any more, now I could be a Lazy Beekeeper instead...
Someone else uses Lazy Beekeeper, so I shortened it up to LazyBkpr.

That is funny.  It seems like home renovation or construction is about as stressful to a relationship as anything!  I can’t even count how many people just about broke up over home renovation stuff.  It never goes quickly, smoothly, or cheaply. :'(

Years ago after my mother passed, we inherited her computer. It was our first computer. We needed a new password to log on. My hubby asked what the password should be, I suggested Jaybird because my mother loved her squawky jaybirds and wrote stories about them, such fond memories of mom and her Jays. When I joined the forum I was first Jaybird, but has since changed to Jen  :)

And Yes! when I see a Jaybird in my yard, every day, I say Hi Mom...  ;)

I grew up on one of those typical 1950's era Minnesota dairy farms where you only had 30 - 40 cows, a flock of chickens and a lot of old horse machinery lined up in the grove.  In a way it was more of a typical 1930's farm in that if the modern equipment broke down we didn't stop to fix it.  One of my uncles would be the mechanic while the rest of us grabbed pitchforks, corn husking pins or whatever earlier technology was necessary to get the job done.
Between my knowledge of working with older farm machines, owning a few Model T Fords and my tendency to stick to older practices my Dad used to refer to me as "the throwback".  By my kid's terms I'm very "retro" so Retroguy seemed like a reasonable screen name.   :-\

I lived all over the midwest then Kentucky as a child and had a northern accent, a southern accent, an in between no one could tell where I was from, saw about 40 states before the age of 18, I have a LOT of diverse interests, and if you put all my friends in one giant room there would be funerals for sure., so I am kind of a gypsy.  The i makes it feminine.

My screen name started 15+ years ago(by my wife),I would pick my daughters up from preschool and when I would show up they would yell
"king daddy!!" .Not sure why but it stuck. And it drove the teachers and the other moms crazy because they thought I made them do it,
Of course I did not discourage it because it was fun to mess with them ;D

Friends of ours picked up on it and I'm referred to as "the king"  because of my daughters, and I retired early(kings don't work according to them).

I think that I may have posted this before, and if I did, just remember that I am almost 76 years old and cut me some slack.

The one thing that I have done all of my life is shooting sports.  To this day, I shoot bolt action varmint rifles, skeet and trap with scatter guns, bulls eye pistol and my favorite, black powder cartridge rifles (think Quigley).  I was on a division rifle team in the US Army and was shipped to Viet Nam to refresh and teach marksmanship to snipers.  Later on, as a civilian, I was shooting silhouettes at a local competition, when a local sheriff and some of his deputies asked would I shoot on their rifle team.  They went on to tell me their scheduled practice days.  I told them I would shoot matches with them, but that I was way too busy to practice.  At that point, one of the deputies interjected: "what are you a lazy shooter?"  The name stuck in shooting circles.  I do consider myself somewhat lazy and a consummate, long term shooter, so being honest, I am a lazy shooter.  (lazy shooter)

Back in the day I spent more time on the Rivers than I did anywhere else. I had built an airboat along with several friends and we would run the Arkansas river all the time.   Well one day we all took the boats out. The wife was in a rotten mood but went along anyhow.  As I came up on the bridge coming into town the boat caught the wake of the boat in front of us throwing us head on into the bridge pillar totaling the boat. skinned, bruised, and cutup.  We towed  the boat a couple 100 yards back to the boat ramp along with the wife harping on me about trying to off her.  When we got to the boat ramp an old timer who I had known forever and was a bit salty. Was watching it all said "You aint much of a Riverrat if you would total a boat to off the wife" The name stuck amongst the guys and I was know as riverrat from that point on in the group.

My Dads side of the family used to live on a island (Harrison Island) in the middle of the Tennessee river near Loudon, they were called river rats and to my understanding were just as mean. TVA bought them out when Fort Loudon dam was built, but they leased the island back for several years to farm it.

My screen name steps back to the days of BBS', then CompuServe, then a local BBS, then on to AOL.  I think, for the most, mine is pretty self-explanatory  Captain Obvious.  I started as CptObvious.  Unfortunately, by time I set myself up with AOL, CptObvious was already taken... so I switched it to CpnObvious.  I've had a few various "surnames" added to it, such as CpnObvious_MoD (Master of Disguise) or for a while I was in an interesting group that called (Masters Of Destruction), though we weren't really all that "bad"... but in the end, CpnObvious is pretty clear and is what stuck.  I suppose it also gives a reader the initial impression that I may, or may not, be somewhat of a sarcastic person.

I have worked as a lead cook and baker at a children's home for the last 22 years.  My philosophy has always been to give it my best, try to make it fun and always give a little extra.  Hence the name Bakersdozen.
Jack asked me if I was superstitious about the number 13.  I never thought of it in those terms and always found Friday the 13th to be a good day for me.

Baker, It would have been a real loss if you hadn't reconstructed your answer, glad you did.
My whole story wasn't such a "jewel" so I'll merely say that my screen name is a combination of parts from my first name and my family name, and it was selected in the early days of the internet (alias the World Wide Web or WWW) so that it would be unique to me.

I'm always kinda surprised when I meet people named Ted.  I often wonder if they are called Teddy Bear by THEIR family and friends? Maybe, maybe not.  If so, I see them more as "closet Teddy Bears", "faux bears" as it were.  It really doesn't count until you ride your bicycle to the store, wearing Lycra bike shorts and a cut off t-shirt, to purchase a feather duster.  Standing in line, with the only feather duster they have which is HOT PINK, while 4 or 5 big Texan he-men type get in line behind you who are purchasing shot guns and boxes of high caliber ammunition.  What could possibly make this worse you ask?  Well, brother Tommy, also wearing Lycra, yells from across the store, "Hey Teddy bear!",  runs up and gives me a big kiss right on the lips.  Now, my brothers and I have been through a lot together, and we love each other dearly, so to be kissed, yes, on the lips really isn't that unusual.  For us.  The big Texans?  I'm thinking they saw it as out of the norm.  I was terribly concerned that brother and I would die that day, fighting the good fight, together, but die none the less.  Yes, I see myself as a REAL Teddy Bear.

Other than that?  Ya'll are just MEAN!  Ted

I used to play professional paintball.
When playing a game, it is important to be able to communicate quickly and clearly with your teammates so everyone knows what needs to be done on the field, or if any status changes have occurred (players eliminated, change in position, etc.)
Normally last names were used, but mine sounded to much like other commands called during the course of a match.
Zweefer was the moniker given to indicate me, as it didn't sound like anything else one would hear during a game.  Phonetically it carried over the noise of  the guns and paint, and was short as well.
Eventually i answered to Zweefer as much as my real name, and its been with me ever since.
The added bonus is there are very few Zweefers out there (I think I'm the only one) so getting the name when registering for things is pretty easy  ;D

I have a 56k modem, but it only connects at 26.4 kbs.  DSL is two miles south of here, but they won't run it up to my house.  We're on the fringe of cell phone service, so wireless internet runs around 150 kbs.  Hughsnet allows us 250 MB a day download usage for ~$60/month and after that it's throttled to around dialup speed.  I have my weather computer ( http://www.wattsbarweather.net ) hooked to up dialup.  We have since installed Hughesnet (for now), but the usage is very limited.  Luckily, mostly text data (like this forum, except for the pictures) doesn't take much usage allowance.

When I was in college, my roomate created my first email account, he said I needed a name.  At the time I was playing a Nintendo game ( I think)  It was either Grand Turismo or Ridge Racer 4.  Since I played both games quite a bit at the time and like them both...well you see how I came up with my user ID which I have also used ever since.  (20+ years)  Hard to believe the internet has been around that long.

yes exactly correct LogicalBee and he also had his own indian rebellion brewing. Tecumseh was born near what is now Chillicothe Ohio and at the time of his birth a low arching falling star blazed across the sky which in the language of the Shawnee indians was a tecumseh or more accurately 'a panther burning in the night'.    Some think he was somewhat of prophet in that he was timing his rebellion to the earth quake of 1812.  he was reported to have told the tribes he was recruiting for his rebellion that his sign to start the rebellion 'that he would stomp his foot and the ground would shake, their house would fall down and the rivers would flow backwards.'  this rebellion was somewhat overshadowed by the war of 1812 in which Tecumseh died.  He was fairly well known militarily for his tenacity... which I guess is the one characteristic Tecumseh and I share.

Back in the early '80s I lived in Phoenix and was fascinated with bees, and through developing a friendship with an older beek I got started with one hive. I often visited and pestered him about the bees for some time trying to soak up as much of his knowledge as possible, and we eventually got to be pretty good friends. He was a native to Phoenix, lived alone, was in his 80s, and had about 30 hives on his place on the outskirts of town. One day he asked me if I wanted his hives. He said he didn't want to care for them anymore, so, I took him up on it, and moved the bees to a friends citrus orchard.

I wasn't too skilled with beekeeping back then, and times were way different, without the mite pests we have now. I kept bees for only a few years, moving them from citrus in the valley, to mesquite and catclaw in the desert at a little higher elevation, and then in the summer up to the higher mountain meadows were I now live. The bees did well and made lots of honey filling supers at each location. After extracting, I would load by hand the 30 or so heavy, powerful hives for the move. I wintered the bees back down in the Phoenix area. Eventually, after I moved to the mountains, life kinda got in the way and I lost interest in all the work of moving the hives. I gave it up, and haven't had bees for years.

The nectar flow here at this elevation (7200') really doesn't start until after the summer rains come which usually starts around July 4th. Cold nights with warm days seems to last forever in the spring, and very little blooms. Fruit tree blooms very often get froze out, so spring is a rough time for bees here. Late July through September the meadows are finally full of flowers. I'm not sure it's worth trying to keep bees here without moving them like I used too. I'm fascinated with bees though, and want to get a few hives again. I spend much time reading and watching videos trying to learn as much about bees as I can, and hoping to figure out if I can keep them alive year around up here without having to move them. I can't leave it alone, gotta try, hence the name "badly stung". Anyone out there keeping bees successfully in a similar area? I guess if I learn how to feed the bees and winter them, I can get them to survive, but I doubt I will get to harvest a surplus of honey without replacing it with syrup.

Have you thought of putting the hives on a utility  trailer? Cheep to insure and saves having to lift and carry. if you need to lift them that much and you wont need to pull the honey before you move them. Unless to much weight for the size of the trailer.

Thanks for the suggestion, Apis. I don't know where I would move bees too if I was to try that. I thought about looking for a place to winter a few hives, but don't know of anyone with a suitable property that I could ask. I understand AHBs are fairly common in Arizona, so I'm concerned about queens mating with AHB drones resulting in hives turning nasty, and wouldn't want to place hives anywhere that could lead to someone getting hurt.

I really want to catch some swarms this next spring in the Phoenix area and try bringing them up here to see if I can get them to survive. I have this idea to build several observation hives of several different sizes, setting each outside a small shed against a window made just for the purpose. I want to be able to work the hives from outside, but observe from the inside. My idea is to build boxes just like typical hives, but open on one side to place against the window glass. I want these hives to be from single frame width & up, and from nucs to full size hives to observe closely their behavior. I think a row of windows down one wall spaced just right for setting the hives where they can be worked easily but viewed through and just the right width glass for each hive would be very interesting. I would make the windows tall enough to stack several supers as the colonies would grow to take them. I could block the glass temporarily above each cover to keep light from coming through to make viewing from inside easier. I think much could be learned in this way about exactly when and what is going on in relation to pollen coming in, nectar flow, hive build up, swarming, wintering, and more. Since my area may prove to be difficult to keep the bees going year around, I may have to find a place to keep the bees part of the year, but maybe not?

Camera's have come a long way since the tintypes.  Do you develop your own pictures, and if so, are you careful of the chemicals used to develop them?

Again, welcome aboard and tinandglass is unusual.  Thanks for the explanation.

I know a few are offering to make them from digital images* these days, or you can try faking it with ps plugins, but I like the process itself, it's what makes it enjoyable. And, you absolutely have to be careful with these chemicals, any chemicals really. I use ether, ethanol, silver nitrate and a few others which are poisonous and/or combustible.

*A lot of alternative processes are now made by converting digital camera images into negatives on overhead projection film. I got into this because I learned how to develop film in Grade 8, have a b&w dark room, and in the early days of digital , all things film related were going into receivership (Agfa, Polaroid, Kodak, Ilford etc) and I love working in the dark room. I didn't want to lose that experience. Pushing pixels in photoshop doesn't do it for me.

Want the long version or the short one.
OK!! I'll do the short one cause I have learned many don't read all these post thru.

MY nick name is Al to about every one except family and the PT girls now.
When I got married my wife had two children a girl 9 and a son 6. I really didn't care what they called me as long as it was with respect. So they called me Al then one day the daughter saw me reading a Alley oop carton in the news paper. I became Ally to her every since. I love the UP of Michigan and have spend many a happy day there on vacations hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, 4 wheeling, dirt biking and just kicking a round site seeing. Guys at work got to calling me Yooper which people who live in the UP are known as, The Trolls are under the bridge.

So when we got a computer and internet (22 years ago the old K mart blue light free one) I used alleyyooper. Daughter was not happy I made the mistake of adding the e to alley but still loves me never the less.

So help me out here for a bee business name:
Knucs Nucs?
Kel bees?
Bull Falls bees?  Old name of town where I live, on the Wisconsin River & bees raised on river.
River bees?
River Chalet bees?  We also own a  Vacation Rental on the Wisconsin River named River Chalet where most of the bees are, I have taken several groups for a tour thru the apiary and a look 'under the lid'.  The only place I will use a Flow Hive, thought it would be 'cool' for quests to tap the hive for their own little jar of honey(not yet in use as all most nectar is going towards comb production).

I would probably avoid River Bees as a business name , we have a moderator here that has an apiary business under that name and it has already been the subject of a lawsuit when someone else was using it without permission.
If it's not already registered, I like Kelly's Bees.  :) If selling nucs is going to be a big part of your business, include the word bees.

hi knucs, and thanks perry. you can check with the state of wisconsin for any name you would like to register and will also show similar names in a search on the state registrars website.  many don't register, but really it's a good idea to do so.  and yes, i have been through a number of 'shots across the bow'  with others who decided they liked some of my trademarks.  :)

choose a business name you are happy with, something unique and different so your customers are not confused if a name of another keep/apiary is similar.  register your business name/trademark/s with the state of wisconsin, you won't regret it!

good luck! let us know what you decide on!   ;)

So, our apiary is named "Some Day", which I guess means bee killer based on the last couple of winters.

errrrr... G'day, howsyabumfergrubs, like :-)

"eltalia" is a"play on word" maybe loosely derived from The Italian being the style of EHB I am fond of, but they aren't Italian any more than I am. The bees that chose me to live with are Red Kelpies, and like all Red Dogs they know more than I do, so it is a bit like herding cats to have me do what they want me to do.
Yet we survive, which I look to WWB.com in transporting how well those Eltalia work little ol' me.

A huge "Hi Ya All" to those who know my work elsewhere... enjoy that

For others....?... a retired commercial operator my prime interest is in Trigona
for which I will get no help with here but maybe some others in Australia playing with our natives might just link up with myself who builds an extensive work library with
those lil' buggers. Ask and ye shalt receive ;-)

Not many aussies here,

I read your post not long after getting up. Still a little bog eyed.

I had to look up Trigona (stingless bee species). I am sure I've read posts about stingless bees. Not sure if it was WWB. From the aged fog of my mind I think it was something from Mosti.

I wonder if there is a trade off for being able to keep bees that don’t sting.
Trigona pollinate flora which often rely on ants and flies or wasps for propagation, flora EHBs either cannot or won't get to. I guess there is one tradeoff of sorts.
They may not attack with a sting but they are not defenceless against Man. In fact whilst I rarely wear a veil working the Italians I always wear one when doing deep inspections of a Trigona colony.
Their class act is to send a few scouts down your ear canal whilst the main
force attach themselves enmasse to your eyelashes.
Using a combined effort the idea is to pull your eyelid shut. Keeps you busy if no veil is worn.

G'day....

My son lives in Japan and is engaged to a wonderful Japanese girl.  You would think I would start learning the language.  The truth is, my future daughter in law speaks English so well it hasn't occurred to this lazy American to pick up a few words.  :-[

In Canada French is the official second language. But for us in the west, being able to speak Japanese or Chinese would be of more use.

When the internet was just getting started, my son wanted to sign me up. He said, "you need an
ID other than your own name for a screen name".
So I said, use ID. It was taken. Idee was taken. Iddee was free. I have used it ever since.

A fan of 'cryptic' myself _and_ a long time advocate for Italian strains my choice went to
The Italian, word wrangling that to El Italia - hence "eltalia" to suit ansty computer signin
'rooles'.
Not a drop of Italian blood in me veins, being first generation Australian of Irish and
Indigenous Aussie stock I hold strongly the ethos - bees come first in apiary management.
Other stuff I am far from anal about - live and let live, I reckon... it is your choice of
dance music. Heh  8)

Cheers.

etalia, are Italian bees the breed of choice in Australia?  What other breeds do beekeepers use?  I am curious.

My son picked that screen name when he set up our computer, he said i have had Bees and farmed ever since he could remember so it became brooksbeefarm. I was looking at some old pictures awhile back and seen this of old Mike our Coonhound, it was on my desk when our computer repairman was fixing it and he said that was a neat picture and brought back old memory's to him also, so i had him put it as my Avatar.

G'day BD..
Of the true Italian there are very likely few to none breeder lines remaining today as everyone
has played with genes for decades now and import is expensive to impossible.
I'll try and attach a map from a study done a few years ago, whilst not complete it does give
some idea of the spread of genetic material.
Thanks for asking, m8. ;-)

Cheers.

Well since this just came up in discussion here with my part time boss (Dr Juliana Rangel) eltelia is the map based on mitochondria or nuclear DNA analysis?  Does the map when it refers to Africa (I do not really see any pink on the map?) refer to any species from Africa or a specific linage of African honeybee? Where about are you located on the map?

G'day.
Mitochondria I'd reckon. If it's important I couod go ferret through the study to be certain.
I've marked the image and remounted it, my location is the green zone, same as my avatar shows
as seen from above the Equator.
The Africans were bought here from the USA around the early 1930s is my best recall from reading
hard copy yet those bees in those zones marked are no more agro or productive than our Bush bee
which is heavily loaded towards the European Western bee. The Bush bees attitude varies with season
and numbers with early summer being the best time to go after wild colonies. Mind you never in hundreds
rescued has more than a wide hat and glasses been donned as with chainsaw, ladder and boots it is just
too hot (sweat) not to have a clear go. Be rare to find bees with sufficient attitude to chase you off the job.
Different story for the Caucasions I've run in boxes, you need to pick your time to work those without a
veil at least.
We have long run a subset of the Italian flavour known as Red Kelpie, a bee you can work in your swimmers
outside of foul weather.

Cheers.

Thanks for the response...  so I am guessing based upon your description that the African bees were from Northern Africa and not scutella from Southern Africa.

No idea - well above my pay scale as "apiarist"
I went and ferreted the paper out and attach the header, you might be able
to use that info to locate the whole study.
Reading excerpts tells Scutella were never imported here from Africa.

Cheers.

thanks for the link... the abstract says they are from Northern Africa.. on occasion (according to DNA research) some of the same lines of bees show up here in the Southwestern US.

you folks down under do some marvelous research work on honeybees... < hats off to you folks on that I have read and reread Fat Bee, Skinny Bee several times...

I collect the modern output for reads on a rainy day, beyond that I focus on bees doings
for the bigger picture. I got into it for the fascination, did the money making stint (pollination)
to go full circle into fascination again on retirement. Acedemic work is very important buuut
has to be boring as all getout for those doing it, unless it  pays well. ;-))))

Yes, it is true Aussie _has_ done much to advance knowledge in the science however
that has slowed considerably these past six years with a succession of Treasurers hellbent
on reducing science funding. The CSIRO, various DPI institutions and BioSecurity (formerly AQUIS)
have all had serious funding reductions with consequential demise of long running projects.
Sooo thanks for the acknowledgement buut don't judge us too harsjly in the future in not keeping up.

Cheers.

The money come and goes and seems to flow toward whatever highland captures the news.  We have the same trend here but I suspect the pendulum will swing back in the other direction fairly quickly.

Thanks for the info and link Bill...
