My first time....
« on: May 01, 2014, 04:49:43 pm »
picking up imported queens from the airport.
After doing an inspection yesterday, in the area of the airport where the queens were arriving, I got to go in and inspect them (for SHB) and then release them for delivery. I took half to the Annapolis Valley and the other half went to Central NS.
Pretty cool handling all those queens. Rough calculations I figure around $11 grand worth. Next week is a way bigger shipment.
The first batch in the Benton cages are from Hawaii, the second batch are from California (2 cases, 1 full, second half full).
Can you believe it but I actually get paid for this?  :)

Thanks.
If you look at the pic with the plastic bag.
You notice that I put 2 of the queen cages back in upside down after inspecting them?
There is candy beneath the cork. You remove the cork, and then replace it with one of those black platic tubes in the ziplock. Those tubes are preloaded with more candy.

Just curious why they have you look for SHB,  I thought you already had those in your neck of the woods.
My advice: worth price charged :)

Really neat photos, Perry!!!  Thanks for sharing them.  It is interesting that it is often suggested to use "local bees" that southern queens don't do good in northern areas....Hawaii to Nova Scotia, now *that's* quiet a stretch!!!   ;D

Cool pictures and a nice job!!!! ;)

No, not in the Maritimes (yet).
I believe there is an area in Ontario that they have been discovered, but it is quarenteened. I think maybe the same in Quebec. I have heard a Prarie province or two may have isolated pockets as well, but I don't think anything has become established as of yet.

Yeah, and it's only going to get busier in the short term. All the major inspections are just about to start. Anyone selling bees or equipment has to have them inspected (including me) before they sell. Also, anyone moving bees out of the province for pollination purposes has to have them done as well.
Throw into that my bees, and queens for my nucs start arriving next week and it's going to get wild.
My ability to visit here is down a bit (but not for long).  ;)
