waited too long
« on: April 22, 2014, 10:16:59 pm »
Well two weeks ago I had 5 queens arrive.  They came a different date than I expected.  Arrived on the day I thought they would ship, hard to remember dates in Jan to April.

Any ways, I made up the nucs but couldn't add the queens until the following evening.  One had some open brood apparently and started queen cells.  I searched twice and no dice on a queen although she was released.  Had five cells as of today and one hatched.  I took two of the unhatched ones and made a nuc this evening.  Hate to see a hatching queen cell go to waste in April.

Now I have a hive with several swarm cells I will use Thursday to make up three or more nucs. That will make me ten and remembering from last year that's all I want to feed at one time.  I have gone from trying to get them through the winter to trying to get them built up for next winter in two weeks. :)  Drawing the line at forty this summer.  Not looking good for my line drawing in the sand.

I have no idea how you guys that have several cope.  If it wasn't so interesting I would have moved on by now onto something else.

I ran out of sand, I'm way up the beach.. try drawing a line in rocks.. but then I want to expand dramatically..   The challenge your talking about is part of what draws me in so far, and then keeps me coming back..
I worked as a mechanic for 20 years, at times working two jobs. Working for Chevrolet during the day and at a performance shop by night..  The interest that held me, and kept me turning wrenches was the diversity of problems to fix. It was not often that I was doing the same job over and over, and beekeeping is a lot like that, always a challenge and always something to learn.

The good thing is you didn't loose your bees, the bad thing is, now you have more to worry about. Jack

You all are nuts!!  I find it comforting that there are others out there with the same feelings.  At the same time disconcerting

Well I checked another hive this evening.  This one was light going into the winter, a late split.  I added a partial super last fall to help the single deep get through.  Two weeks ago they were light, packed today with bees and swarm cells in the medium.  Looks like will be capped tomorrow or atleast Friday.  Got to get home and dig around for the queen tomorrow if she's still there.  Drawing a line does no good. :-X

The little woman uses the word obsession. But I prefer passion.
