Queen Hatching From Cell
« on: May 01, 2014, 09:55:16 pm »
This queen hatched from 1 of the 29 cells that I cut out of the hive yesterday. Hubby just happened to be walking by and noticed it right from the beginning. So Cool! ;) 8)

That's cool!  I wish I had thought to do that with some of the swarm cells that I cut out of one of the hives.

Fantastic photo opportunity there!!   Bet it was fun to watch!
Now. Quick! Turn it into swarm lure before it finds a crack in the wall and takes over one of your hives.. or worse.. MINE!!!!

It was fascinating to watch! Never thought of swarm lure! Wow!

I just told that to hubby and his eyes got big and he said "Well we have enough swarm lure for 29 more swarms then!"

NOT!!!

Shortly after this queen came into the world, we scooped up all the cells and put them into this jar. Today 6 queens hatched! It's Not Pretty!

Now.. if I put this jar in the fridge or freezer and then get a cell out for lure, will the queen come back to life?
Or should I only use a dead queen for lure?

Put the queens in rubbing alcohol or Everclear and leave them in it. Use a Q tip to dip into the alcohol and rub inside the swarm trap. A lot of queens make a good strong lure.
The alcohol will evaporate, and leave the smell of the queen behind.
Yes, that means killing the queens...   after your ordeal, I have a healthy FEAR of those queens!!!!

Snark-   Just so you know my friend... I have toughened up in the world of beekeeping. I now have no problem with destroying the opponent. I have faced many a ferel feline in my day and did what needed to be done. I admit through out this last six weeks I was engrossed and charmed by all the queens that I have encountered. But I asked for that encounter, longing to have the experience that Scott had in his mentored youth of being asked to find the queen amongst many hives. The bees complied

I do have a bottle of everclear from which I make my propolis tincture. I am off to preserve the queens ~  ;D
