Did you ever see the queen in that swarm?
Cool video, there's nothing like watching "the march".  :goodjob:

No Perry, Did not see her. They marched and fanned like she was in there. I try to give them 10 days before going into box to look for her. Usually by then I at least have some eggs. Lesson learned the hard way.

They were acting kinda weird though. All those bees on the ground inside the pot. They were very slow moving, I had to prod them along with a stick and they were kind stuck to the ground. Weird.

I wonder if they were about to starve?

If you watch one of the workers fanning next to the entrance, it looks like a sticky black substance is left behind from her abdomen.  It starts right before 4:00 minutes.  You got a good close up of her.
You are going to have to feed, feed, feed to get this hive through winter.  Some keeps wouldn't bother.  It almost seems like they were desperate because that location for a new hive wasn't anything to brag about.  IMHO I would bet that they absconded.

Bakers, I'll go back and look, but what does the black substance mean?

I do think think they were about to starve.

Good news is I couldn't wait 10 days to check these. I checked today and saw a bunch of eggs. Since Thursday? Wow. And they have pulled down a quart of syrup.

Black substance? going to look now.

Post the video to utube, then just copy/paste the address. It will open the video in your post automatically.

That's what I was wondering.  I was hoping an old bee guy/gal would have answer.
If you look at the video, she looks like the substance was sticky and she left a drop when she moved closer to the entrance.

Baker,

I can video a lot clearer on my laptop. It degrades a bit uploading to FB.

The spot looks like its already on the box and what looks to be hanging down at the back of her abdomen is her back leg on her other side. Thats what I see anyway on a clearer video.
