Observable Bee Frame
« on: October 02, 2014, 05:11:21 pm »
Hey! So I am going to speak to a 4th grade class tomorrow about beekeeping.  I remember when I was a kid places having frames inside of a plexiglass box so that you can observe bees crawling around on the frame.  I was thinking about throwing together one of these but I am having a hard time tracking down any instructions on how to build one.  I'm hoping that maybe someone will stumble across this that has a little experience and maybe some plans for me!

Thanks,
Dillon

Google observation hive plans, and something should come up.
I have 2, one is a 3 frame, and the other is a 1 frame!

In your experience, which do you like better?

I have only used the 1 frame for displaying a nice frame of capped honey. Too small for bees except maybe for a few hours IMHO.

we had a one frame unit set up at the fall fair this year, with a marked queen and emerging brood.  Ventilation is important, along with squirting in some water a few times a day.
My advice: worth price charged :)

Our club recently had a booth at a renewable energy show. The gentleman that brought the observation hive had a sponge with water in it in the corner of the hive. He had it in a plastic bag so it wouldn't stop. It seemed to work well for the girls.

Just make sure you check with the school before you take it with you. Some schools are not allowing observation hives anymore due to liability issues.

Sad, but a sign of the times unfortunately.
