Visitor to the garden
« on: October 16, 2014, 06:19:41 pm »
I wanted to post this a few months ago, but, well......

The dogs were raising a ruckus so I went to investigate.  Didn't want the dogs to kill it so I got them inside and called the DNR.  My hearing isn't the greatest and he was on a cell phone.  So, this is what I HEARD:  "You can shoot it cause there's lot's and your in the country".  When I told the cat I didn't want to shoot it, he said, you must have misunderstood.  What I said was, "You can shoo it into a box and release it in the country!"

Great Horned owl fledgling.  Still trying to  figure out the flying thing.  I think I know how he/she feels!  I thought I saw an adult hanging around the corn crib I use for a wood shed.   Ted

I would want that owl to stay around to get all the rift raft of wild animals around, just make sure you do not have small dogs are cats out.

Yes... and I'm curious why this fledgling was out during the day. But here might be a clue ~

Owl Medicine ~ Medicine Cards by Jamie Sams and David Carson

If you have had an encounter with an owl, these night birds may have a tendency to collect around you, even in the daytime, because they recognize a kinship with you.
Is it any wonder that in many cultures Owl is a symbol for wisdom? This is because Owl can see that which others cannot, which is the essence of true wisdom. Where others are deceived, Owl sees and knows what is true.

A nice creature to have pay a visit I would say Ted  ;)

that's a great picture ted!
when i was about 6 or 7 years old, my dad brought home a young great horned.  he found it while deer hunting, i think one of it's wings was broken.
my father has never had much of a 'maternal' caring thing going on, but he raised that owl to adult hood.  my mom has old black and white photographs of that bird sitting on the back porch with the 5 of us kids. i remember him putting on long heavy welding gloves, he'd call out for the owl (named it HOOT, go figure..... :D) and that bird would land on his glove, and he'd feed it slices of venison.

"My hearing isn't the greatest and he was on a cell phone.  So, this is what I HEARD:  "You can shoot it cause there's lot's and your in the country".  When I told the cat I didn't want to shoot it, he said, you must have misunderstood.  What I said was, "You can shoo it into a box and release it in the country!"

WHAT?!................ :D

We did indeed shoo it into a box and released it in a woody area north of our house.  A creek also runs through that area (probably why it's not farmed!) so the owlet would have access to water.  Obviously, my hope is that it survived, however there are LOTS of coyotes in the area.  I do hear owls from time to time in the early morning while having my coffee and a smoke in the woodshed so, who knows?  Interesting that it stood about 18/20 inches tall but had talons as big as my hand!  Not that I have huge hands, but, you know what I mean.  When we first saw it, it was on it's back, talons up, with the dogs barking and looking for an opening.  I think the owl would have done some damage before the end.  The whole episode was quite memorable.  Ted
