Fumagillin syrup

I'm just now getting my fumagillin on 3 hives. I don't know if temps have anything to do with it, but our temps this weeks are about 40 at night and 60 by day. Is it okay to feed syrup right now?

Bees will take syrup if daytime temps are above 50 F, the warmer the better. If you are feeding with a top feeder that is right above the cluster even better.

Okay, so far so good then, and are these holes too big for this thick syrup? I just saw a pic where the holes were real tiny...

I usually use a 1/16" drill bit, those look a bit big to me.

it might jen, the holes, as perry said, look a little large to me as well.

Mkay, I can make new lids... but on the other hand...  If one of the ways to get the fumigilin on and in the bees is to do the drench thing, I suppose a little dribble won't hurt anything....  ???  :D

depends on how much is 'dribbling' or pouring out of there jen......if it's dribbling or pouring out and you see some liquid on the bottom board.....well  not a good thing, and in cooler temps, not a good thing either to be dribbling down on the bees.....

I just used a small nail to poke some holes in the lids.  I think maybe they're called finishing nails.  This is one of those cases where you can experiment and see.  The thickness of the syrup may be a factor, but not being vented and pulling a vacuum on the jar is the real reason the syrup doesn't come out (kind of like putting your thumb on one end of a straw and the water in the straw won't come out).   ;)

Turn the lid over and flatten out the metal burr left from poking the holes.  This will close up a lot of the hole and make the lid usable.  I have done this trick  quite a bit.  Especially if your out in the bee yard and discover your feeder is dribbling syrup. ;)
