Calling all storytellers
« on: October 15, 2014, 08:30:22 pm »
I just read, in the Oct. 2014 American Beekeeping Journal, that Wicwas Press is looking for beekeeping stories.  http://www.wicwas.com/  The rules can be found here. http://wicwas.com/WA_2015_Rules
First prize is $500.00, second prize is $300.00 and third prize is $200.00  You can buy a lot of beekeeping equipment with that.
Now I know some of you folks have stories to tell, because you told them to us at World Wide Beekeeping.com.  The deadline is March 1, 2015 and the story can be fiction or nonfiction or poetry.  It can be submitted by a beekeeper, spouse, friend or partner.
I sure would think it was really cool if a member of this forum won.

I can think if two stories right of the top of my head that stood out a memorable. LazyBkpr and his story about when he was a boy and the beekeeper that turned into his mentor. And then.... who was the one who ended up with a basement full of bees, and a skunk?

Both of those stories are soo good.

I-75 north out of Atlanta, going to Chattanooga, is known for harassing truckers.

The story goes, a bee truck with 520 hives got in line about 20 trucks back on a warm day. After inching along for a half mile, he finally got to the roadblock. The bees were very agitated, as was the driver. They ask him to bring his DOT card, log book, etc. etc. and come out of the truck.

His reply??

I don't have a log book, dot card, or license. I am drunk and stole this truck. Now what are you going to do with these bees when I go to jail.
They told him to be on his way.

There 'ya go, iddee.  What was that old tv show?  "There's a million stories in the Naked City, and this is one of them."
It doesn't have to be one about yourself.  It can be something you witnessed.  The skunk story was pretty good.  :D

At a bee meeting several years ago a fellow was telling a true story about a woman he was teaching. they opened the hive to discover a mouse in the top deep. The woman takes off screaming. Old fellow gets rid of the mouse and the woman came back. They were doing a total complete inspection so they get into the bottom box once they get a few frames removed from the bottom box a snake a big king snake come slithering up. the old fellow not caring for snakes takes of screaming just like a mouse scare woman. the woman removes the snake to a wooded area away from the hive and finally talked the old fellow to come back and finish the inspection.
He said all his and that woman's hives now sports mouse guards and snake guards all year long.

(Entries over 1500 words for essays (both fiction and non) or 3 pages for poetry will automatically be disqualified.)

I considered it, but there is no way I can condense that story down to 1500 words and keep all of the emotion in it.

It was just over 3000 words, so I would have to cut half of it out..  I think it loses too much, but it would have been a perfect fit.
