Pollen Patties going in starting this Sat.
« on: January 14, 2015, 05:05:46 pm »
Looking at weather. Starting Friday this week, temps look to be in upper 50's to upper 60's rest of Jan.

Never fed pollen patties before but we're going to start this Sat. Jan 17.  Only gonna start with maybe 15 hives and start with small patties 1/2lb or so  and watch them and see how they do. Then maybe add more hives the following week, etc. We usually have some cold snaps come through in Feb but I think they should be able to handle them.

I left a super setting on top of the double deeps and it look like that was to much. So far all but about 3 hives are not even up in the super at all. I guess they have enough food in the 2 deeps.

I will probably pull a few frames Sat and see what I see, any brood etc.

Just a word of caution, at least here in Florida, as much as bees well love the pollen patties, small hive beetles will go insane over it. Know its not going to stay warm  but they can operate at lower temperatures then bees.

Yea Barry, I have heard and am going to put small patties in to start and monitor.

But I'll tell ya, I am seeing 66 degrees next week. I bet I can put a bucket outside and they will go crazy. Plus, I could watch them play in that pollen all day.

Actually, I may be feeling under the weather day and call in sick to my real job.

59 degrees today. Thought I would try out the Brewers yeast and Soy flour dry to see if they liked it. I take it we are good to go with the patties.  :)
