Started working on motorcycle

Will upload pictures  shortly. Working on a motorcycle is a pain in the gluteus maximus. Tight working spaces, accessing to bolts and nuts and screws quite restrictive. One fork tube out second one held in place only by stop ring which of course is located in such a way to maximize pain. Did I mention working on motorcycles is a pain in the gluteus maximus. :P pictures soon.

Looking into handlebar area

Right fork tube out, left better then 1/2 out only stop ring to remove.

Right fork tube removed.

Tools of the trade.

Parts smoker not included lol.

Just the pics of all the parts laying around and all the tools would have sent me running. I'm afraid these hands and fingers aren't meant for fine work.

The work is pretty straightforward not really that difficult were it not for the confined spaces

Iddee, what you see is a 5lb mini sledge, have a 15lb full sized sledgehammer but that may be a bit much even for Irish mechanics

A truck mechanic's tool box in the Army has a 1/2 lb. ball peen and a 2 lb. ball peen. In mechanic school, they taught us the 1/2 lb. was for working on trucks. The 2 lb. was for working on drivers.

I had a friend of mine that was an Army mechanic he worked on tracked vehicles. I have never seen tools and equipments so large so heavy as what he had available to him totally understandable nothing I would voluntarily choose to work with....just saying lol

Lazybkr, not nearly as much space in current generation of trucks and virtually none in car's. No more sitting in the engine compartment to work on the motor lol...:P

Yes, thats true, in fact, now you have to unbolt the body to get the engine out on many of them..   No thanks...   Things were easier from the early 80's to late 90's..   You JUST cant beat a multifuel deuce.

Ok so those are the old, bushings, oil seal, retaining ring...obviously in very sad shape lol bought split ring pliers to remove retaining ring, so of course wound up using a screwdriver>:(


This is the right side damper rod note the corrosion and goo ( technical term ) encrusted end no fork oil for very long time.



Fork spring encased in semi solid sludge.
Lots of work!

Fork tube disassembled...retaining ring, destroyed bushings and almost a oil seal practically a dust seal. Bought split ring pliers to.remove retaining ring, so of course had to use screw driver>:(



Damper rod note the crud and goo ( technical term ) on end of rod also interior of lower fork tube.

looks like the hardest part will be the cleaning..  is the inside of the tube pitted?

A bit not too bad  soaking everything in cleaner.
Am having difficulty pulling apart the other fork tube probably jammed with goop.
