They're alive!
« on: March 03, 2015, 08:55:24 pm »
Well, our latest cold spell is over (and according to local meteorologists, is likely to be our last serious cold snap this year), and my bees are still very, very much alive.  I pulled up the robber screen and looked inside this evening to check on them, and several guard bees immediately crawled out loudly buzzing, "We're alive, butthole, now get your face out of the entrance of the hive or we'll prove it."  Which I did, not being the sort of fool who likes to anger females with stingers.

:D

Glad that they are alive and well.

I have to ask.  How cold of a cold do you get in Arlington?
I'm starting to think that the bees are keeping me...

If it goes lower than 30 degrees it's the apocalypse.  If it also snows, it means God lost the Apocalypse.

We've got three more days of below average, then it'll get over ledifni's apocalypse standards.  :occasion14: Next week the 40's woo hoo! :occasion14:

Congrats Led!  We have a couple more crap days here, then the temps start to climb and the sun comes out.  I'll be glad when/if I can repeat what you've said, "They've made it!".  ted

LOL! Yeah, the 39 we hit last night was the first time we cracked above freezing since about December, I think? And tonight it'll be 10 again.

Ugh, one heck of a winter.

Led says, "... looked inside this evening to check on them".
Ef says: I don't know how late in the evening you looked, but in general, bees don't appreciate being checked on when it's dark or getting dark.  It's not that you've woken them up, it's just that in the dark they are in their most offensive mood.  In the dark they don't fly--they crawl around aggressively. :'(

God lost the apocolypse again, it's freezing rain in Fort Worth and Arlington, I did get time to get firewood in  (I heat with wood) but did not get time to open my hives so I am hoping the bees are ok for stores, they had brood and I made sure there were honey stores close to them and brick sugar above. by now that brood has probably hatched hopefully our warm 2 days gave them time to move to stores if they needed to.  It is only dropping into the 20's

Yes, I know, and it wasn't dark yet :)  It was getting towards nighttime and it was too cold out (about 45ish) for them to be flying, but the sun was still up.  I was careful in any case, just wanted to peek in the entrance and see the undersides of the frames, but I knew they probably wouldn't appreciate it too much so I was quick.  If I had gotten stung though...oh well, worth it just to know they made it through the freeze.  I can handle a sting or two.

Yep it looks like the predictions of warm-ish weather this week didn't quite pan out.  They're saying it should be pretty warm this weekend though.

Yep, God lost the apocalypse this time all right.  Not only is it 27 degrees, there's at least an inch of snow on the ground.  Snow in March, in Texas?  I can't even remember the last time that happened.  Good luck, ladies.  You better not die between now and Sunday.

9 right now, supposed to be 44 tomorrow (Get some cold cuts!) AND 62 BY WEDNESDAY!!  9 to 62 in less than a week?  I'll take it!  Once it gets over 50 I'll be making the rounds to see who survived. Pollen sub will be set out on Wed, baggies will go on desperate hives. Let the build up begin!
