It isn't that easy when my fat fingers are involved.  ;-)

You can practice on drones until your comfortable with it.

Use a different color in each hive for the drones and see if you get drifting....

drifting? as in drones visiting neighboring hives?

At this point I don't think I want to paint the queens according to their age. I won't ever have more than 3-4 hives, unless of course I have a second interested partner. Hubby does fine building stuff but not interested in raising bees. I just want to be able to find the queen quickly.

I've noticed paint markers that are acrylic and others that are oil based, does it make any difference?

Acrylic drys faster.   Be careful not to harm the front legs on the queen.  They get damaged she will not lay eggs

Tim Wilbanks showed us a little secret.. I need to apply it but need the corks first...

he took the bottle of testers, put a tapered cork in it.  That tapered cork has a hole drilled through it.
He has a second cork with a small drill bit...   like a 1/8 bit or so, the cutting end is twisted up into that cork...  the base of the drill bit slides tightly into the cork in the bottle, and goes through, almost all the way to the bottom, NOT QUITE touching the bottom..  to mark a queen, he holds her between his fingers..  (You will have to ask Ted about the pressure used to hold her) pulls the drill bit from the bottle and cork...  the cork wipes all the paint off the bit, except a small dab on the base of the bit..  he touches the queens thorax and is DONE......
he puts the queen in an empty cage.. lets the paint dry... then holds this cage up to the cage with the attendants and blows gently.. the queen SCOOTS into the original cage...

Watching Tim, or Robo handle the queen with such confidence makes me feel like a clutz..  I can make Miniscule gun parts with a bit of metal and a file, but I cant hold a queen in my fingers...
