Weird Swarm Call???
« on: April 19, 2015, 09:34:16 pm »
Friend called, said he was hunting mushrooms and seen a swarm of bees along the road (5 miles from my house) wanted to know if i wanted them. I went and found them about head high in a cedar tree, a small baseball size ball on a branch, but bees was flying all around so i parked my truck about 10 ft. back and waited. The ball of bees got smaller and not as many flying around so i thought they probably found a new home.I started to leave, Looked in my rear view mirror to see if a car coming and i seen the ball of bees on the bed of my truck by the tail gate :o. The hive i brought was right under them, there was just a double hand full of bees so i took the lid off the hive pulled a drawn frame out and held it under them and brushed them on it. I never seen the queen, but several workers started fanning and flying bees started coming in. I got tired of holding the the frame and looking for the queen so i stuck it in the hive closer it up and came home. Any idea what was going on? There still in the back of my truck.Jack

Sounds like you got yourself a hive.  If they are feral bees, sometimes the queen is hard to spot.

It's your magnetic personality Jack  ;-)

How long since there were bees and a queen in that Hive?  Any chance the hive had the right smelling residuals to draw them over?

It had drawn comb from a last winter deadout so i wasn't all that surprised that they were drawn to it, but when several bees started standing with there butts in the air and fanning like the queen was there and i didn't see her?? It became a mystery to me :-\. Jack
