Cutting hand holds video

I have jig made for cutting hand holds in boards using a molding head cutter. Working great so far. And fast 7 to 9 seconds per hand hold.


Todays work, earned a nap.

WOW, that is the first method that makes sense to me. Where do you find that blade?

Wow buddy, if you lived any closer I would say let's set up a business together and crank those out big time. Then all we would have to do is figure out a few jigs to start cranking out frames as well.
Hmmmm................we could call it Brankee Beekeeping Supplies, or maybe Yandt Beekeeping Supplies, naw, that last one doesn't sound so good!

Yep, It's a molding head cutter attached to an old cheap table saw. I bought a new table saw and now just leave this one set up to cut hand holds.

Perry, that jig works pretty good and I don't have to put boxes together first. I stand to the side and fingers out of the way. The gloves help a lot to.
I have a couple of blocks I put in for the short sides.

I like Yankbrandt bee co. better. , I'm to lazy to make dovetail and cut hand holds for hives, i just butt them up glue and use sheetrock screws to put them together, and a 1x2 glued and screwed to the front and back for hand holds and a good primer and paint. Haven't had a bee complain yet and they last a long time.I have to admit yours are prettier. Jack

I agree brooks, bees don't care, but I'll probably end up selling these now that I have the quality where I like it.

And to be honest, now that I have the setup done. I couldn't cut, glue and screw a 1x2 faster than I can cut a hand hold 6 to 8 seconds each.

I use a router bit to make mine, I think a cove bit.  I made a jig as well to get a set length.

Gtrr4: looks like you'd only have about 1/4" of the shaft in the collet, if that... You haven't had any wobbling?  The router still grips it well?

That is what I was wondering, if only a  little in the collet that would be dangerous to use, could decide to fly out.

Would like to see you jig set up.

From that view you would be correct.  However the bit is in an extender (I think that is what it is called).  So there is plenty of shank secured.  With the 2" cove bit I get a hand hold depth of 7/16".  I took a couple pictures of the extender for a visual, but did not want to pull mg other bit which is set up for my finger joints.

I use a tire buffing tool on a drill press.
I've cut hundreds of hive handles and still got all my fingers too.
I also have the jig to cut the box joints, it's well worth the money.
