Getting My Hives Queen Right
« on: May 14, 2015, 03:05:14 pm »
I accomplished this with all of my own resources  ;D  I'm stoked!

Mother hive: transfered laying queen from nuc to mother hive 6 days ago. She's released. That's a bee in the cage sniffing around. I'll check back in two weeks for eggs. What a difference in the attitude of the hive. So peaceful

Nuc hive: pulled from this spring turned into a full bustling hive. After moving queen to Mother hive, I split the nuc.. to keep it a nuc, I now have nuc1 and nuc2. Nuc1 is now peacefully making and filling queen cells.  ;D

Nuc2: I had a frame of queen cells left over from when I tested mother hive for a queen. Put them into Nuc2

They are hatched out now. I'll check back in 2 weeks so she can get mated and start laying.

good job.  You are really starting to get a grasp on what beekeeping is all about. ;)

;)  well not quite.. maybe 10 years?  :D  It took me about 4 days to come up with that maneuver...

mmmmkay, I'll take this frame out of... put over in that one... let's see make sure mother hive is ready for a laying queen... scratching head... make sure frame of eggs has no queen on it... ummm... need to search for some pulled frames for nuc2... get a couple of those from swarm hive... nope out of the shed... none in the shed... frame of eggs now has 7 queen cells on... what am I gonna do with this now... make sure nuc2 has no queen stuff before adding frame of queen cells.... 2 frames of brood, one of honey, one of pollen, one empty... now check nuc1 - need an empty...

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger Jen. I broke down a hive for nucs last nite, had five frames of Q cells. Started running out of bees to cover the frames, so I broke into the neighbor hive (really pissy) to shake some bees into the boxes. That's when the wheels fell off LOL. I THINK I got it right!
It's not a honeybee, it's a honey bee. Whateveer!
