I'm in the thick of it
« on: May 04, 2015, 12:20:13 am »
I had some visions in my head of expanding my apiary a bit.  Also I am moving south by about 300 miles in a few weeks.  So I decided to split my 4 hives fairly heavily.  Right now I don't know if I'm coming or going.  Every single of my hives is queenless.  Well, not exactly queenless, they all have virgin queens or capped queen cells at the moment.  With all the Nucs I made up I've gone from 4 colonies to 11, and that's not even including the 3 Nucs I sold already.   My small city backyard is littered with Nucs and bees are flying in all directions.  It's a madhouse.  My thought is to sell a couple of queens  and 3 more Nucs and re-combine some of the Nucs to end up with a manageable 5 or 6 hives.  Then again, maybe 4 really is enough in my already hectic life.
My advice: worth price charged :)

Ah Chilliwack. Spent a couple summers there as a kid picking raspberries and strawberries. First time I ever used dynamite to blow up tree stumps to clear land.
Big dairy farm country there. Only problem with that end of the Fraser Valley is all the exhaust and pollution from Vancouver funnels there and then just sits in the bowl.

Congrats on the move. moving into pollination area with blueberries raspberries  cranberry  and many garden crops. You may see a decline in honey production per hive but if you can get paid for pollination it will all work out. Even though you have only had bees a short time, the club in Williams lake is losing a knowledgeable energetic beekeeper.
