My concern was that Fenton might be hit when chasing them across the road,but it looks like traffic stopped and Fenton will live to chase deer another day!!
We have a 12 year old diabetic Doberman that thinks she is a 1 year old puppy... We take her along on our walks, and she has learned to heed our warnings before she runs off into a drainage ditch etc... we just speak up and she stops, and backs up.. she has learned that our warning means pain or at the least severe embarrassment while we fish her out of a deep ditch, creek, etc...
While walking, a doe and a fawn jumped up, and ran RIGHT in front of us... Naturally, the old Dobie gave chase... And yes, in such a situation the ears are automatically switched to OFF mode...
She "Ran" in mid air at the ditch.. crashed to the bottom and using ONLY her nose, gave chase.. How she managed to get through the barbed wire fence, I have no idea... but it stopped my wife.. twice...
She chased across a small section of our field to the creek... How she crossed the creek.. I have no idea... the wife waded, and swam, and waded... and slid down the opposite bank like an otter... twice....
The last I saw of the wife was when she was JUST managing to climb a root and get out of the creek... I walked across the bridge, and watched the deer run across the lower field and cross the tracks, so I knew where the Doby was going to go...
When the wife arrived... panting, wet, and angry.. I was sitting among the railroad cinders on an old RR Tie with an excited OLD doberman panting like mad beside me... Because I was laughing,, I had to duck and dodge.. TWICE! Thankfully she was tired and I was out of physical range...
