Water is rising.....

I've been following the weather reports about what's going on in Texas----and worrying about how you drought-parched folks are managing with this totally new situation. 

Too much of a good thing. 

I hope it all returns to normal soon and without any of you suffering any real damages.

Texas doesn't have the infrastructure to handle large amounts of rain. West Texas may be worse, I remember 35 years ago every time it rained an inch Tom Green street in Odessa had 4 ft of water on it.

Much of Houston sits very near sea level.

Thanks everyone for your best wishes.  Those hives and the stand in those pictures wouldn't be there if those bees hadn't attacked my neighbors a week ago.  The weather is drying out for a few days and water is receding, the worst is hopefully behind us until next time. 

What Lazyshooter reports is true, here is a picture from the end of our driveway looking toward the river.  You will have to stand on your head to see it, I couldn't get it to load correctly.  Sorry, I meant to show the plight of my bees, not my home.  The two hives on the bench in the last pic were down in knee deep water, I moved them close to the house because they are pretty gentle.

Nice photo!  Beautiful family.  My world is rather upside down this week too so I can just about see the picture. And I do understand the hot bee issues....

hopefully the worst of the flooding is over. My daughter is on her way back to her home on Cedar Creek Lake, and 175 is just not very far above the water either.

The two hives I moved were both light.   Both had a deep FULL of honey a month ago, but the bees have only been outside the hive five or six days in six weeks and consumed most of those deeps full of honey during their confinement.  If it wasn't raining, the wind was blowing 10-20 mph.  Their population is up though.

Ef jokes---the bees too were trying to make it easy for you and lightened their hives. 
Hopefully, after this rain, there should be a really great nectar flow to replace the missing honey.  Especially with the strength of the families to let them collect it.

Ef said exactly what I was thinking.  Hopefully the rain brings on a nectar flow for you.  I am hoping the same here as it has rained nonstop and the blooms have been washed off of many nectar producing plants.  I think we will have a good fall flow and that means plenty of winter honey for the hives.

I'm counting on some good fortune in that regard Ef.  And, with regard to my good looking family, it will be 48 years of marriage next month.  We have two sons who are good people.   A pretty good life's work.   :-)

This is one of my all time favorite paintings.  I went specially to the Art Institute in Chicago to see the original with my own eyes.  I have a replicate of it hanging in my hallway.  Your family picture reminds me of it ---but healthier, without the starkness but still without silly grins either.
Lee, I hope you don't find this posting offensive, it is meant in sincere complimentary manner.

BTW, do you know what bark beetle killed all those trees?  They really did a thorough job.

Mandatory Water Restrictions Lifted
Effective Friday, May 29
                       
The Brazos River Authority  announced the Mandatory Water Conservation restrictions are hereby rescinded. The District's sources of water, Lake Georgetown and Lake Stillhouse Hollow, are now above conservation stage. Residents and property owners may now resume regular use of their water supply including any and all water uses previously restricted. The Board of Directors extends its appreciation to the Brushy Creek MUD Community for its cooperation in limiting water during the period restrictions were in place.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but whenever we have looked at houses I always prefer high ground. Here in the Annapolis Valley, the valley floor is protected by dykes that are hundreds of years old, keeping out the Ocean. I still remember watching the videos of Japan after the earthquake and watching in amazement as the water just rolled inland , sweeping cars and buildings across farm fields and such.
