Heads Up
« on: August 03, 2015, 11:23:28 pm »
After all the years of farming you would think i would know better  I put a electric fence around my sweet  corn patch and went to get my fence charger that was in a wood box to protect it from the weather, well when i opened it, yep, you guessed it, i got a face full of yellow jackets :o. I took 6 hits to the chest neck and arms >:(. That was this afternoon and i can't even see where i was stung now, but have some itching. Speaking of itching :-\ i've got 5 chigger bites on my right leg ( behined my knee) that i have scratched till they bleed, and they still itch? It's been three days now and i still have some itching, Why would chigger bites bother me worse than yellow jackets and bees?? I'm out in the fields every day and this is the first time i've had chiggers since i was a youngster, picking blackberries and gooseberries, i would get about a hundred a day . Well i'll quit whining now, i'm sure Squirt, iddee, tec. perry, rat, G3, and others i've picked on are going to feel sorry for me :D. Be careful and keep an eye out, it's Wasp time. Jack

I seem to have problems with the black flies up here as well. I itch and swell with those, worse than any bee sting.

I cut up a yellow jacket nest once with my bush hog about 10 yrs ago. I got stung about 50 times.  I was sore all over my body. I went back two hours later with gasoline to finish off the hive. With all these stings I never had a reaction. I get stung with honeybees and I have to get the shots. I itch with black flies.

I always understood that chiggers burrow under your skin which is what causes the itching.  Kerosene or Vasoline, the cure is to suffocate 'em.  Either one will probably work but I'm betting the Vasoline won't sting as much after all that scratching.

Yellow jackets, paper wasps, whatever, I never lift the hood on an old truck or car without being ready to step back and have a can of RAID at the ready.  Last summer, my son got stung every time he fired up the barbeque.  Turned out he was putting the utensils, plates &c. on an old flattopped sawhorse.  Closer inspection by me found a yellow jacket nest under the bracing that boxed the legs and the top together.  Sneaky little devils...
I always stand behind my work...
It makes me harder to find.

I got a new propane tank for the house a few months ago.  I have to lift the lid to check the gauge. My old one had the guage on the outside of the lid. When I check now, I lift the lid VERY slowly so I'm not surprised.

The EPA required those lids to give the wasps and bumblebees a home. Environmental help, ya know.

Retroguy, I use to think the same thing but i've been told it's the chigger spit that makes the skin soft so they can suck blood like a tick? I don't know i'll have to look it up.My propane gas man has a can of wasp spray he carries with him, i told him i had killed a nest under the lid a few weeks ago, well they had built back. I thought he had made a mistake when he gave me the bill? it was a dollar five a gallon :o. Your to late rat, ;D i forgot my fence tester and didn't want to go back to the shop after it, so i took a blade of grass to test it with, nothing ??? so i touched it with the back of my hand and it curled my toe nails and i yelled a couple of bad words that my wife head at the house >:(. I heard her laughing, she knows how i hate getting shocked. I'll take bee stings over a elec. shock anytime  Jack

So that's why he changed. Knocked some sense in his head.

Well, I don't think many women have ever seen an ugly billionaire, Jack. So he may be right there, too.  :-\
