Hummingbird time

I purchased a hummingbird feeder today.  I filled it and put it out an hour ago.  I just saw a little hummer feeding! That's quick.  Around here they say to leave your feeders up until Halloween.  In past years, I have been lucky to have 2-3 hummingbirds in the neighborhood.  I know down Jack's way, southern Missouri, there will be dozens and dozens chirping and squabbling to feed at one time.  So sweet.

I love my hummers, although the Ruby Throat are so competitive there is seldom more than one at a time on the feeder.  I had to take mine down because the honey bees were all over it.  I just put it back up and they don't seem as interested in it now.  There is a great website entitled the Journey North and they like people to join and post their hummer sightings in the Spring and as the migration south approaches to keep posting your sightings until they are gone.  Makes it fun waiting for the first one to arrive in the Spring.

we enjoy the hummers, and will have dozens, and dozens and dozens of them flying and feeding.  we use multiple feeders to keep them all happy.  the males show up first in the spring, and are quickly outnumbered by the females. i leave them up until after labor day, some are still migrating. when i don't see them, the feeders come down.  one time i was fortunate to hold in the palm of my hand a male and a female, the male was chasing the female and they both flew into a gap between an old window.  they were both frantically trying to get out, so i carefully lifted the window enough to get my hand/arm in to get them both out (one at time), what a neat experience for an unfortunate accident.  if i wear a red hat, they sure like to check it out.......
