Dark Honey?
« on: August 18, 2015, 11:51:31 am »
Extracted 3 five gal, buckets of oil looking honey :o, it came out off the extractor like molasses and had a good smooth taste to it( not strong) It's like the honey i had about five years ago that my customers loved?? With all the rain we've had i can't believe it checked under 16 :o. The hives i had 4 to 5 med. supers on that the bees were taking there time about capping, Well, i'm lucky to get one and a half to just one med. super of honey, they have ate it or moved it to the brood boxes? It has to be because of all the rain. where they couldn't forage and when they could the nectar wasn't there and it rained again. (it's starting to rain now)I still have honey to take off before the Aster and other fall flowers start blooming, very little is in bloom now, but i'm looking for a good fall flow (hopefully). I think i will be around 1000 lbs of honey down from last year? Any idea what plants or flowers that makes that dark and thick honey? My buckwheat got drowned out this year so that's not it? it could be Sumac, but it's not that dark? Jack

Something like this? ;D

Last year I ended up with one super I kept separate when extracting, it was dark and smelled "bad" like a barnyard. Supposedly it was buckwheat.

If it's different, charge more for it to help make up the shortfall in your harvest. :) Call it specialty honey. ;D

Please take a video of sticking a spoon into a jar and then letting it pool back into the jar I am interested in seeing how it flows back in. Smart phone video will be ok. thanks

Call it "Cranky Honey", because of the weather the girls have had to deal with. Bet it sells out! ;)

I've only seen one pic of Jack at a bee meeting and it wasn't a good shot (then again, considering the material)  :P
In my mind I have always pictured Jack looking just like this, probably drinking out of a mason jar too. :D

I will be your first customer to buy a gallon of the honey. Would love to have some of this again. We got some identical to this several years ago.  Kansas University attributed it a few things one was the unseasonable cool spring we had that froze out a lot of the normal plants the bees get nectar from.  another thought was when it got hot it almost happened overnight and stayed hot.  They also thought the honey may have indeed been sumac.  It was used motor oil dark and about like molasses but had a great taste.  I still have people calling asking for it

I know that 3 gallon stays at the house, 8) i got started taking 2 table spoons of honey before i go to bed for many years now, don't remember why, but who cares it taste good. :D Like rat said, i have customers who bought the dark honey i had 5 years ago and when they see it, it will fly off the shelve. :o I still have honey to take off in the same out yard this came from, so hoping i'll get more of it. I think i'll tell them old lady's that it's clover honey from clover that was dying out and turning brown, that will stir them up.  Jack

Took off 11 med supers today, some from the same yard the oil looking honey came from and the rest from another outyard about 12 miles from it, I'm hoping now that it's going to look like motor oil again. :D Jack

I got 80 gallons of the darkest honey I have ever poured. They made it during the poplar flow here and it was super dry during that time.  It started raining and out of 40 supers I might scrape together a gallon.  Even the supers I left to finish are bone dry due to the rain this summer.  Most are still kicking but light.  Going to pull off the rest and start treating this week into next.  I may break close to even when I sell this stuff.  I try to hold on to enough for the regular customers but I'll run out when they find out the shape everyone else is in.

I just extracted some boxes today. I ended up with some dark 90 wt. oil looking honey. it's flavor is very mild. I'm north & east of you but had the same wet weather pattern this spring. I bottled 14 gallons worth & over 1/2 of it is dark.

I would like to look at the way the honey reacts when it is piled. Put a coffee stir stick into the jar of honey and pull it out about 4" hold it still, and see how the honey flows back into the honey in the jar. If some one with dark honey could do this and record it and post it I would be grateful. I will hold off on any speculation until then.
