super question
« on: August 22, 2015, 09:35:19 am »
I have a hive at my brothers place to see how it would do (future thoughts of putting a full yard up)

They filled 4 supers so I extracted them and put the supers back on so the girls would clean them up.

Not sure if this is a problem but they filled them again in a week and a half, just not capped.
Just wondering if I should just leave them for this winter? Goldenrod is about ready to bloom in force out there
and nowhere for them to put it.

Leave it on them for now if it is uncapped and was brought in in a week and a half it will still need ripening by the bees so the ti will be reduced thru the ripening process. this will allow space for the golden rod honey. The bees will also cut back the hive population for going into winter by back filling the brood chamber, ans forcing the queen down into the bottom super.
If you put the 4 supers back on and they have refilled them all you will defiantly need to remove some off them. How much to remove? the question is how much do you need to leave on them for winter. What is your hive setup? 2 10 frame deeps. Do you plan to fall feed to medicate with Fumidil-B all this will effect how much honey is left on the hive. in your area the hive will need 100 lbs to survive the winter. This is from after the hive as dramatically slowed down brood production (end of October) till the spring breaks and the bees can be feed syrup if needed. If you are against the feeding of syrup then more honey will need to bee left on the hive.

It's a problem we all wish we had. Now you are going to have to extract again, Buy more jars, get sticky again. Yes it is a problem A good one to have.

Thanks for help, I was somewhat worried that they were going to run out of room.
I am running 2 10 deeps and was going to leave one super on top of that  for the winter.

What does the brood chamber look like for space. Added 4 wet supers and all full, just needs capping and flow to follow. Sounds like to me you are out of room IMHO ???

Sounds like you got a very clear answer to your opening question----If the empty supers were refilled in a week and a half, it means that there is plenty of nectar in the area and overpopulation by bee hives is not an issue.  Now the next question will be just how many hives can you put on your brother's place and have each hive do as well as this one hive has done?

I hope to find out next year, The area looks promising, just now if I just keep my bees alive through the winter :)
