ef, didn't get to see the cross alaska pipeline. we did the tram thing, a little hiking around and dinner at the top;  a rail trip in the backcountry, a cruise to see glaciers in prince william sound, an airplane flight around denali with a landing on a glacier, a fishing trip, and some driving around. some short hikes, and some we were rained out on.  we did a great deal in a short period of time. we want to go back some day!

we are back from alaska.....
it rained pretty much the entire trip, maybe 2 days were rain free.  that's okay, we still enjoyed and made the best of every day.

fishing:
we were flown in to a creek by helicopter (clear creek) talkeetna, alaska, about a 20 minute helicopter flight upstream and away from any combat fishing, and floated down by raft for a full day. our pilots name was will.  we streamer fished for king salmon and alaskan rainbows (flyrods).  we were not disappointed even with the rain all day. streamer flys (hand tied)  were about 3 to 4" long, and weighted to get down deep.  the fly of the day was a squid imitation, and the kings hit this consistently.

the helicopter was a Robinson 44 Raven II Helicopter. neat experience, our pilot's name was will. amazing how these pilots land/takeoff in tight spaces.  our river guide's name was 'skip'.   turns out he was born and raised in billings, montana, (as i was),  5 years older than myself, but we had a lot to talk about. he was quite the feller, sorta reminded me of two of my brothers...... :D

skip tried to save a squid fly that got hung up on a trolley line across the river, (wasn't me that got it hung up there).......so the two engineers on board the raft decided to use a fly rod; eyelet at the top to unwind it from the trolley line and wound up getting the fly rod tip pulled off the 3 piece  fly rod trying to save the squid fly.  (last squid fly  left).  the tip of the rod  was hanging off the trolley line next to the fly........... :D

after a few minutes of conversation between the two engineers, i flat out said, "skip, you have a rope in here? throw the rope over the tow line  for you two to pull it down far enough to get a hold of it to get it unhooked"

brilliant idea, and so the engineers did. the rod tip fell from the sky into the drink and went sailing down the river.......... :D
two guys running and swimming downstream in waders and rain jackets to salvage that rod tip was quite funny, i am only sorry i didn't get a video of this.  seriously funny stuff!
an executive decision was made by all to leave the fly behind......
the fly? well, skip said he would come prepared the next day to salvage that fly off that trolley line, and i am quite certain he did.

Only a true RIVERBEE would be able to manage all that you did in such a short time.  You really made the most of it.  I hope you don't need an extended vacation to recuperate from your vacation.  The pics you posted were superb.  They reawakened in me the memories and feelings of the cool clear air and fresh breezes of Alaska.
In contrast,
Yesterday I went with one of my grandchildren to participate in an archeological dig not too far from my home.  The work wasn't hard but squatting and digging by hand trowel for six hours or so left my muscles all stretched and exhausted.  This week it was only one day but next week I have three more days of digging scheduled together with another three or four grandchildren. In spite of the tired muscles, I still hope that I'll be able to get to go through at least some of my hives today.

lol ef! yes we really tried to make the best of the limited time we had.  i did suffer a little jet lag and time catching up for a couple of days.  i had some challenges with two gimp hips, maneuvering around, getting in and out of aircraft, trams and the raft, and any long walks, etc, but managed alright. the hardest day was fishing. sitting in the cold all day really seemed to aggravate the arthritis and by the end of the day i was pretty stiff and achy. a hot tub would have been nice, but the 2nd rental home we stayed at did not have this nice amenity.  our first chalet did, and i was in that hot tub every morning and every night.  sure helped to relax and rejuvenate the tired muscles.

salmon fishing was a really neat adventure, btw, i forgot to mention, make sure the drag is set properly on your fly reel when you hook one of these, and DO NOT try to palm the reel when the line goes spinning off.........otherwise you WILL have burn marks in the palm of your hand that will make you quickly forget about your gimp hips!................. :D

Thanks for sharing, I am dreaming about going but seems like something is always coming up.  I would also love to experience the land of Perrybee.  Maybe next year I will strike out for New England and parts beyond. Thanks for sharing.

Looks and sounds like a trip you will remember the rest of your life. I don't care much for canned Salmon, but years ago visiting my uncle in Calf. he bought some smoked Salmon and smoked Halibut that was to die for :eusa_dance: I bet if you caught that 40lb. Salmon on a fly rod? you had to lay down and rest for awhile. Riding in choppers is a hoot, but i could do without the noise. Did you see alot of wild life from the copper?Glad you had a good time even if it did rain most of the time, it's been doing the samething here in the Ozarks. Knowing you, i'll bet you looked where the bears were feeding on Salmon and run them off to get there fishing hole. Squirts are like that. 8) Jack

dream and sometime go dunkel, it is worth it. research, plan a little. figure out what you want to do, what you want to see in the time you have.
ken and jack, i will remember this trip for a long time to come, and we both want to go back at some point!

i love salmon jack, but not in a can! i missed about two strikes on the flyrod, one took my fly with it.  when i caught this 40 pounder, you just don't bring them in right away, it takes a little time to reel them in.  i was so dumbfounded, and my right arm was shaking a little... never mind the reel burns or the ding in the thumb from the fly reel going around and around...... :D bling, bling, bling, or rather whack, whack, whack............ :D
i have caught some pretty good sized lake trout, but not on a fly rod, so this was very cool for me!
we didn't see any critters from the chopper, pilot said unusual, but it was raining......no noise jack, we wore headsets. drowned out the chopper noise, and could hear the pilot clearly and talk back and forth during the short trip.  his knowledge of the terrain and the river was pretty cool. no bears on this trip, even though the guide said we might encounter them, but we didn't.

next up, i will share some pix/video of a day cruise we took through prince william sound, hope you all are enjoying the pix/videos?!

beehives not far from our second rental in talkeetna, alaska:

the fireweed in alaska was in full bloom.  we looked for local honey in our travels and only found one small store that had honey from a local beekeeper living near talkeetna. we purchased the honey.  good stuff.  all others had honey shipped from somewhere else on the shelves, and one store had a big sign on a shelf full of honey advertising as 'fireweed honey'.  i looked at the label.......the label indicated that the ingredients were; 'honey' and 'fireweed oil'.........?
so i asked where the honey was from.  turns out the honey was shipped up to this gift shop in talkeetna, alaska from northwestern montana........... :D

Nice picture notice how dark of colors some of his supers are painted? most of use would never get away with painting hives that dark of color down here. Up there it helps the hives.

the fireweed in alaska was in full bloom.

I heard several times that fireweed blooms from the bottom up, as I recall.  They say when the fireweed is done blooming, summer is over.  Beautiful, beautiful.
river, I have enjoyed hearing about your Alaska adventures.  Thanks for sharing.  As for the rain, I think that is the norm, especially around the Ketchikan area.
Thoughts regarding the pipeline:  We saw the pipeline and I did marvel at the size and "technology".  I remembered the 70's with all the controversy, debates, jobs created, and so forth.  I do shutter to think they are discussing putting such a monstrosity through the center of the country.  That will be a sad day for me.  The pipeline was just plain ugly.  I don't want to spark a debate about the pipeline.  Just talking.

bakers, thanks for your comments!  i always enjoy pictures of others adventures, especially some place i have never been.

the fireweed bloom was incredible!  it was incredibly beautiful, everywhere we went.  i may have some incidental pics of fireweed, when i find them, i will post them.  pretty cool adventure. for the first part of our journey we were in girdwood, this really is a rain forest area. the two weeks prior to our stay, weather was hot and sunny, go figure!

these are NOT my pix, but just to give folks an idea of what fireweed is:
