looks pretty normal to me Yankee.  and yes many of my own bees do much of the same thing in the fall of the year.  it is a very good sign that the bees are capable of producing lots of propolis which I suspect is in itself a survival mechanism.  for myself when I select stock for queen rearing this tendency is pretty high on my own list of thing to look for < which is kind of funny only in that 30 years ago this would have been considered to be a negative in terms of selection.

I have a hive or two that do almost the same thing. I have a dickens of a time getting frames out as there is a golf ball sized chunk of propolis attached to the corner of each frame at the entrance. It is proplis by the way. ;)

It tells me that the idea of extra ventilation is overdone by most beeks today. The bees can control the amount they need.

Yes. it's propolis.

I'm with iddee on the ventilation, seems like there is something to learn from this.

like Tec said it comes from to the genetics of the bees. Italians produce very little  Caucasian produce a lot more. Al though I don't discourage propolis production there are occasions when the hive gets carried away with collecting propolis well beyond the needs of the hive.
I had a hive once that in addition to continuously closing off the bottom and top entrance, they would also pile it up on top of the ends of the top bars. This was happening in the middle of the hot summer the propolis was running down the face of the combs due to a lack circulation. I would scrape it clean and with in a week it they would have it plugged again.

Like Apis mentioned, Caucasian bees  8) they were a popular breed if i remember right? about the same time of the Midnight breed. They were good honey producers and mild mannered,But :o i have tore frames apart trying to get them out of hives to inspect them. Maybe this trait is coming back to the bees to fight the SHB? i'm sure it would make the SHB's life miserable. :laugh: :laugh: Jack
