Our youngest son Tyler Got out of the marines in July and the oldest Mitchel returned home today.  Both are going to school on the GI bill.  I didn't realize how well the GI bill took care of our service members.  Their college is 100 percent paid on the bill for a 4 year degree anywhere they wish to go.  And they receive $1000.00 a month to help with living expenses while going to school.  Bad proud of their service but sure glad we are all together as a family again

Add that to lifetime medical care with very minimal co-pay, and it looks even better. Congrats to the ""MEN"" and the parents that raised them.

Fabulous news Riverrat!  Congratulations!  I went to graduate school on the GI Bill, that education paid many dividends over time.  :-)

Congratulations Riverat.  I'm so glad your boys (make that men) are home from the service.  This old ranger thanks them for their service.

Their education  being paid for is the bonus.

It seems you have a great family.

Like RRat..  Mine is also going to college through the military, and like him, I have to say, he will always be my boy, even at 27 years old. He already has deployment orders for 2017...  I hope that much changes between now and then and he doesnt have to go.

RiverRat..  I read the title and breathed a sigh of relief. I feel the pain, and the relief. Truly glad they are back home now!

RRat, I'd be interested in some of the stories they could tell.  Weren't they involved with rescues during the earthquakes?  I' remember something about that, but not clearly.  :-)

Yes the oldest was deployed twice once in Nepal for earthquake humanitarian aide and also the Philippines when it was hit with the hurricane.  The V22 osprey has proven itself very valuable on these types of missions. He spent 5 years as a crew chief and door gunner on the osprey. Hey was part of the first ospreys stationed in Japan.  He spent last 2 years there.   The youngest Tyler was deployed twice as amphibious assault vehicle crew chief. once forward deployed in the pacific and participated in operation gold cobra war game training with Thailand marines and special forces. This set off the north Koreans leader on one of his rants towards the USA. But was quickly quieted down when his forward deployed ships parked offshore in international waters near north Korea. and a 2nd time to the middle east where he spent 7 months in Kuwait along the Iraq border.  He doesn't talk much about the 2nd deployment and imagine he probably is not allowed to for security reasons. The Marines have yet to this day admitted his group was in Kuwait. Both obtained the rank of Corporal  80 percent of the enlisted do not get past lance corporal.  Usually when they make corporal the Corps is looking for them to make a career out of the corps  needless to say there Superior wasn't real happy when they didn't reenlist

Great stories RRat!  Better find a seamstress to get those buttons back on your shirt.  Great job of parenting you can be proud of.    :-)

RiverR, I'm so glad that you reported to us on your boys' completion of active military duty.

I'm specially glad to know that they came home safe and sound after all they went through.  Having served so long and so well (I remember when you first reported on their starts in the marine corps) they are well deserving of all the benefits the US gov'mt gives them.  There is something speical about going to university at a later age.  Their maturity and experience will stand them in good stead to make the best of their education opportunities.

I look forward to hearing more of them in the future--particularly, of their starting to build families.  It's time for you to add grandchildren to your reasons for being so justly proud of them.

I salute your whole family.
