The city had a hollow silver maple that had to come down for safety. It also had a colony of honey bees inside. So, they called me to get them.

Nice job. Hope you got it back upright without too much jostle, and the entrance is pointing in the same compass direction as when in the tree.

Great pictures Jim. Did the city have suits for those guys? I guess if they run into that often enough they might. Really cool they called you up on that. Very nice.

Perry,

I had my own suit and I brought a hood for the tree trimmer for his protection.

This is the resting place of the partial tree trunk in my apiary in my back yard. I put a metal roof on top (metal sheet from a newspaper company for 50 cents) This spring the bees will go into a 10 frame hive.

Nice Jim!  It's going to be nice having that connection with the city.  Of course I work for the city so it is easy to get their phone calls about bees.  It's also a good way to get some firewood.

Without the metal on there, can you see the hive or is there plenty of solid wood yet for insulation?

Have you already cut them out of the log?
If not you might try to take a piece of plywood the size of a hive body and cut a hole in the bottom of it the size of the hole in the stump. Now you can sit a hive body on top of the log in hopes that the queen will move up into it.
Bees are bees and do as they please!

G3, great minds think alike. That is exactly my plan for the spring.  ;D

Dave, I have been with the city for 30 years this past December, so like you I kind of have an "inside" with everyone involved and get the first phone calls.  ;)

You don't see that too much anymore. Employee/employer loyalty (both ways) is rare these days.
