Fireworks, dogs, and roaching.

We had a fireworks show just outside of town and it really sent Penny over the deep end. Jane had to cover her with a blanket to calm her down. Next day she didn't want to go outside for the longest time. Copper could care less and was roaching through the whole thing.

Our dogs are terrified of fireworks, and I am always scared they will bolt...  we have to be so careful.  Some countries actually use silent fireworks now just for the animals.

The Forest Service built a public firing range about a mile up the hollow form our place. Was kind of irritating at first having our peace and quiet disturbed but we've grown used to it. All except for our old aussie girl, Lucy. She has always been frightened of thunder, fireworks,etc.. Now she begs her way in the house, lies down and acts invisible.

Our neighbors shoot fireworks every chance they get. Memorial Day? Really?

Our dachsunds bark for every pop.

The Younger one shakes.  We put a Thunder Shirt on him, and that helps with the shaking.

But the barking keeps going.

We are planning on spending July 4th at a state park where fireworks aren't allowed.

It's perplexing isn't it? I've had 3 dogs, two lost their lunch every 4th of July and New Years Eve. But my Katy now, sits and grooms herself, rolls on her back for a belly rub, or snoozes thru the whole thing. I have found that if I can, I'll lay down on the floor with them and snuggle up, it seems to help a bit.

Perry, what does roaching mean?  Never heard that term before.

Roaching is when a dog is lying on its back with its legs in the air.

The fireworks are supposedly for the enjoyment of their 10 year old son.

Too many firearms around our place. Pups got used to it fast. Most of the dogs always came running when they heard a gun going off, wanting to know what was for supper.

When Michigan legalized the sale of fireworks I had a neighbor that found mortars that sounded like a 1/4 stick of dynamite going off. Sometimes it would catch me off guard and I would have to pretty much peel myself off the ceiling, so I can sympathize with the dogs LOL.

I had a lab that just went crazy during a thunder storm, fire works down at the lake July 4th and me shooting near the house.
She would pace her pen and hypervenolate. She got worse as she aged.
I asked our vet about it and he told me to give her a Benadryl cap. That did the trick and calmed her down when you knew an event was coming up.
How ever those surprise pop up storms and those next door with the fireworks.

I think most dogs are frightened by fireworks.  For many years, I kept English Pointer bird dogs and hunted qual with them.  In all those years, I never had a gun shy dog, but most of them would tuck their tails and go in their dog houses when the fireworks started.  Most cities in Texas forbid the use of homeowner fireworks inside their city limits, but it is one of those "not enforced until a complaint" things.

I live at least one-half of a mile from my nearest neighbor, and I still hear his fireworks pretty well.  They are loud enough to put our cat in my bride's lap.

I sometimes am amazed and awed at the really big fireworks shows, but as a whole, they are not my thing.  Still, I won't deny them to others.

I'm not a fireworks kind of guy either.   I use all my dogs for bird hunting so no issues with them but I do bring in young pups that haven't been conditioned to the gun so they don't get gunshy.  Doesn't seem to bother the bees

When my brothers and i were youngsters and around the 4th of July, we would pool what little money we had and buy fire crackers and cherry bombs. We would find an old stove pipe for a cannon, put a coffee can in it and shoot it out with a cherry bomb  they would go quite a ways. A gun shy dog was useless back then, dad would give it to someone if he could, or take it to the field and come back alone. I didn't know what roaching was either? now i'm trying figure out what a thunder shirt is? We have neighbors in all 4 directions from us that have AK 47's or something like it that shoot a lot, hopefully there shooting into a dirt bank, it's kind of worrysome when your working out in the field and hear the rapid firing. LOL,, usually I jump up and run across the room when the DOG passes gas.. maybe your the one person i DONT want to meet on this forum.. although, if you make a dog run, you HAVE my respect and admiration!!!!
