Hurricane Hermine
« on: September 01, 2016, 08:57:12 pm »
Looks like we're gonna take almost a direct hit from Hermine. The eye is forecasted to make landfall 12 miles west of my place, putting us on the wrong side of it. 8-12 inches of rain predicted tonight. 60 mph winds out 50 miles from the eye. Looks like I'll have some yard cleanup to do this weekend.  ;D

Be careful and don't take chances. You don't want to wake up in Jacksonville in the morning.

We're just going to sit here and wait on it. Not much else we can do.
I'd much rather deal with a hurricane than go to Jacksonville.

I was wondering when watching the news about this--how do beekeepers protect hives with a hurricane coming in? I figured if you have a basement one could close them up and move them into it, but having grown up on the gulf coast almost no one has basements.

Anyhow, rc, be safe and stay dry.

We made it. Had to dig out today, I had several trees down. It took me until 2 o'clock today to get the driveway open. The county is beat up pretty good, with downed trees and flooding. But I have not heard of any serious injuries.

Went through a hurricane myself when I lived in the Florida Keys..   Friend of mine owned the Little Torch Tides.. a biker bar..  (Think its a church now?) there was a BIG old military generator behind the bar, and he asked me if I could get it running...   I walked out back and pulled the tarp off of it... was a multifuel out of a deuce and a half.. so was no issue at all to get it fired up..   One of the very few places in the islands that had power,,, And... I dont recall when the hurricane ended.. or how I got home...    Wife says she drove the Harley with me hanging on behind her...    REALLY don't remember that....
Anyhow....  It was only a cat 1 or 2 hurricane?
A couple years later a big one went through.. i had moved to Maine... my folks decided not to sit that one out...  When it had passed, and they drove back down.. they had to drive around chunks of buildings, and concrete from the Air force base... the winds were so strong it picked up pieces of concrete the size of his truck and tossed them about...    His house survived with most of the shingles gone, said he could have sat it out, (unless it had turned further south) but was glad they left...
Also once had a Tornado toss me about in a truck...  rolled once and blew half way across a field through the ditch and fence..  thought my time had come...
I REALLY try not to tempt mother nature any more....   I used up all my luck when I met my second wife.

I went through Hurricane Cleo in Ft. Lauderdale in 1963. Watched large palm trees walk across the yard on their roots. Made a lot of money the following week cleaning up around town.

Hurricane Celia destroyed the family mobile home business in 1970, and took out our home on a canal. A couple of years later I rode out Fern in a mobile home while in college.

I probably put too much faith in the tie-downs. I was confident we'd ride out the storm. It was my roommate's first hurricane, and I mustered up all of the bravado and confidence that comes with youth.

I'd never slept with a man before or since, but my roommate came back to my bedroom and hid under the covers!

Neil, I didn't mean to ignore your question. I simply put some concrete blocks on top of the hives. They came thru it just fine, but it was only 80 mph winds. If it had been any worse that that I would have moved them into the barn or something.
I have lived in Florida all my life ( same county matter of fact) and this is the first direct hit I've ever taken from a hurricane. We had some come fairly close, but not like this. The eye made land 25 miles west of my place.
My dad and stepmother have some property at Keaton Beach. It got hammered pretty bad from the storm surge. The bottom floor of the house and the dock are in the canal. Every house at the beach had signicant damage. Steinhatchee , which is a few miles southeast of Keaton Beach took a hard hit too. There are boats sitting in the street and houses in the river.
I guess the old sayings true: If you live on the water, sooner or later you'll live in the water.

My family rode out Hurricane Betsy in 1964(I think), at my grandma's house in old gentilly in New Orleans. Never forget the quiet when the eye passed over, really spooky. The next day the water was right up to the steps of her house and I had no understanding why I couldn't go play in it! She was on relatively high ground. From her porch I could see cabin cruisers tooling down the side streets. The lower ninth ward was a disaster!

Glad you pulled through with "minimal damage", RC.  Hermine may have lost a lot of its punch on its way north, but people here are now starting to worry as the storm warnings predict storm conditions here, on Long Island, till Wednesday night.
My wife and I had been planning to do some touring with my sister, before going home to Israel next week, but it looks like we'll have to cancel on that.

Ef, you can tour into NC.It's sunny, and in the 80s this next week. It's only about a 10 hour drive.

I just saw the latest update on the storm---it looks like Long island is being spared, but the map I just saw shows Nova Scotia to be the next potential land mass to be in the danger zone.
All you folks up there, take care and please don't be complacent.  Better to be unnecessarily prepared than accidentally sacrificed to the caprices of the remnants of a tropical storm.
