Another Strange Happening?
« on: August 30, 2016, 10:43:47 pm »
While doing some field work today and and stopped to gas up the tractor next to my bee yard, i kept hearing bees swarming and seen them staging on a tree limb about 7ft. off the ground (maybe a 2lb. swarm?), i put them in a nuc to take to a outyard. I went to my bee yard to see if i could see if it was from one of them? what i found was a hive being robbed out :o> I had taken a med. super off that hive last week, it was a 2 deep with 2 med supers and i took one. They looked strong and had enough stores in the second deep to winter on and the super i left was 3/4 full and half of it was capped. They had already robbed most of the honey out of the top deep and were working on the 3/4 filled super, i took it to give to the swam i just caught. The other hives looked like business as usual? So my question is, do you think maybe this swarm abscond from the hive being robbed out? In most cases a hive will fight to the last bee, just wondering if any of you had something like this? Seems like for the last 3 weeks ever time i go to a bee yard a swarm is taking place? what's going on?? Hummm ??? Ok perry i give, put the voo doo doll away. Jack

With all the honey house stuff going on I have not been as attentive to the hives as I probably should be. I have lost 3 small nucs to robbing though. I would not be surprised if the swarm was an abscond though, I have often thought that.

There was a short dearth here, and I fed through it.. now the goldenrod and many other flowers are in full bloom and the robbing attempts have faded...
I think, that it is because you don't have any plastic in those hives.. you KNOW that the bees that OWN that plastic love it, but it drives OTHER bees away.. right? You knew that.. I am sure you knew that....
