Look What I Found!
« on: February 24, 2017, 04:37:01 pm »
I've looked in my frames before, but this is the first time I was able to actually spot the eggs in the cell.  I spotted them in a different frame, so I could finally see just how tiny they are.  This is a pic of a different frame, and I hadn't seen the eggs until after I blew up this portion of the photo!

Maybe not much of an accomplishment for you old pros, but a big milestone for me:

That is a big milestone.

I mentor several keeps and some have never seen eggs or the queen.
A pair of reading glasses helps also.
I use one of the small LED flashlights that take a single AA battery. You can shine it in the bottom of the cells and see much better, OR get the sun directly behind your back and let it shine in the bottoms of the cells.

Good job, and we were all at that point at one time or another in our beekeeping adventure.

I have a cheap jeweler's visor I bought from amazon. Works like a charm, also use it to count mites on the sticky boards.

Once you finally see eggs for the first time, it becomes easier after that because you now know what it is you are looking for. After 3 weeks with my mentor I started lying about seeing eggs cause he was getting frustated at my not being able to. A few weeks later on my own I finally saw them and it's been clear sailing since. As you get older the eggs get harder to spot, not sure what's up with that? ???

wm, identifying eggs is a great accomplishment! they are tiny!

now you know! like perry said, easier in the future! using some magnification/cheater glasses or like g3 said a small flashlight or getting the frame with your back to the sunlight to help!

also aging eyes, wearing a veil......we need all the help we can get!

I was working with wandering man and seeing and doing most everything he was until it came to seeing the eggs.  I finally decided that I need to hold the frame myself so I can get the right angle.  I had a great time and can't wait to get into the hives again.

Like RB said also about wearing a veil. Most times I don't wear one so it is easier to see them, but different veil materials will make it easier/difficult to see them. The plastic type mesh for me is almost impossible to see eggs through, the steel wire type of the folding veil seems to be the best viewing for me.

I can't see a dang thing with the veil on so I cheat.  I take a picture of the frame with my IPhone and then stretch out the picture, works every time. ;D
