Blueblood's Seventeenth Swarm of 2017
« on: May 22, 2017, 10:56:02 pm »
Had some guests in the yard for this shake.  They are new to keeping and wanted to watch before heading out to a swarm call I received which I passed along to them.  I let one go earlier in the east part of the county.  So, this would have been swarm 19 had I got all three today.

Nice.

Do these people know that you are odd ... er ... unusual?  That most beeks don't possess your magical power of keeping the bees on the ground?

Not yet, but they may have started figuring it out when I sent them on a swarm call that involved bees hanging on a chain link fence at the pole!

Thanks for the postings. You are lucky that your apiary is away from home. Mine is also, but I have a bait hive at home which is visible from the lounge. I keep looking out the window to see if any scouts are showing interest. I have to look craftily. SWMBO gives me earache if I'm caught looking.

Blue.   With one of your other interests, I am mentally composing a PM about gunflints.

Blueblood, I never cease to be amazed by your unusual ability to attract (and capture) swarms.  I like to believe that they are not absconding from your hives so that makes me wonder about how many hives there are in your vicinity in Indiana and how negligent your neighbors must be, losing so many of their hives' swarms.

Good Morning Ef! I am pretty sure all my swarms in my bee yard are natural swarms from my hives.  I live in a rural area and I am aware of most hives in my area.  All of them are well over 100 feet from my yard.  In fact, miles away from my yard.  I would like to think that the one or two I miss every season are repopulating the woods around me.

So you are a believer in "natural growth".  It won't be too many years and you'll have an apiary that might tax your energy.  :o
Have you thought about where you want to draw the line?   :)

I know Ef!  Ha!  You are right.  I drew the line at 15, then 20, then 25, now 30!  Deb and I have dreams of moving to Israel to live for extended periods of time.  Maybe then, I will take a break.  I could just take care of yours!

Thanks! I have bounced a ton of things off of these folks here over the last five years.  I just jump right in.

Great news!!
Let me know when you are ready to start making plans.  I'll be glad to give you any advice you ask for.  I might even suggest that you do some hive work with my grandson---he's over his head trying to keep up with his own rapid expansion, and I'm not up to his pace.
