Queen replacement
« on: April 07, 2023, 10:41:38 am »

The old girl right before I did away with her.  She was still laying but not enough.  Her retinue was tending to her too.  Poor thing.

Uuh, I have the hardest time killing queens. I do and have, but for the most part I let the bees do it. Unless the colony is small and needs a queen pronto, or it's too late in the season to let the bees make another queen which is a 6 week process.

Whenever I have to kill a queen I always put her in the freezer.  It's a humane way to kill insects, not that smashing isn't, it's just harder psychologically on me to smash a queen.  Plus I always keep a couple old queens in the freezer in case I ever wanted to make a swarm lure or some jewelry from one.

I want to see pictures of queen jewelry.

Cruel, yes I agree.  I did away with her by using the hive tool.  I looked down later and she was still alive!  Poor thing.  I took her to the freezer.

My sister is an artist, and she dabbles in all sorts of art.  She's never actually done it, but she's talked about making epoxy jewelry with a queen, so I keep a couple on hand for her in case she ever wants to.  I have an epoxy bookmark with a worker in it.  If you've ever seen those bracelets for kids at like zoos and aquariums that have beetles and scorpions in them, it'd be that kind of thing, but classier.   8)

Baker... I have been thru stuff like that with queens and bees. Like when you put another box on and the box lands on a bee on the edge and when the box is in place you see just the head and roving antenna sticking out... Uuuuuugh!

If I have to kill a queen I hold her in my clasped ungloved hand and send her off to queen heaven with a 'thank you for doing your best' and then squish her real good, put her in one of my potted plants. I know I know siiigh... so soppy  :D
