Baby Chicks
« on: February 20, 2025, 11:46:17 am »
With the high cost of eggs and groceries, I predict brisk sales of baby chicks at local farm and home stores.
Two years ago the city I live in started allowing chickens. My neighbors took the plunge last year. It has been a learning experience for them. I admire them though because they have been serious about how they are approaching it. Their chickens have produced the best quality eggs I have seen in a long time. Strong thick shells and bright orange yolks. They have two well trained dogs that leave the chickens alone. The neighbors know I am an old farm girl so they ask me questions sometimes. Ha! We had chickens when I was a child. That was a LONG time ago!

We are in the middle of a multi-step process to butcher some of our older chickens and get some new chicks.  My sister is calling it "The Snap" (like Thanos in Marvel) because we're basically butchering half the flock.  We're going to be trying out a bunch of new breeds when we get chicks in the spring.  As a result though, we currently are a little low on eggs and are having to supplement with some store bought.
I come from under the hill, and under the hills and over the hills my paths led.  And through the air, I am she that walks unseen.
