Here's the gear that the guy gathered from his dad's collection. He asked me if it was worth $50 and I told him it was worth more than that. He said he'd take $50 and was glad to be able to pass his dad's gear on to someone who would use it. I didn't have anything but $20 bills so I gave him $60 and he accepted the "first time I've ever been tipped" money.

Not shown is another bee suit that was used and badly soiled. I had it in a bucket of water with detergent soaking when the photo was made. The suit shown and one of the veils and pair of gloves are brand new, never been worn.

Those "flower pot" swarm traps work great.  The only thing is you have to get the bees out in the first day or two or it's going to be a messy cut out.

It's a 1942 LA. I have papers from JD which say it was produced on December 8th, 1941 (the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed.) Lots of worried people working on "Little John" that day. I'll post a picture in an appropriate forum so you can see it.

   Indeed!  If your paying close attention to them I am sure they do work well. Plenty of open space for them to like.
   I like to let the bees set up shop, so when I transfer them into a hive they have already started comb, and it is likely the queen has laid in that comb. It anchors them in the new hive a little better without the worry of doing a cut out from a swarm trap.
   You can use a frame of brood from another hive to do the same thing. Still, I check my boxes about one a week. if I check them, and an hour later the swarm moves in, they have a week to make a mess in anything that doesn't have frames/comb in it. SO I guess its a matter of method and time.

With my lack of time (and experience), I, too, am going to try to use a box with frames this year to try to catch one or more swarms.  If they build comb and lay eggs, they'll already be at home.

But, I just wanted to let people that might be wondering know that the flower pots do work well.  You can see my (in)experience with one on my blog.

the flower pot swarm traps hang one on the side of the garage that you walk by each day and other on trees or fence post that you drive by in the neighbor hood so you can slow down and have a look while driving by.
