It sounds good to me. I wonder if maybe placing a frame with some brood right above the hole as well. Nothing like a frame of brood to get her interested in what's up there maybe?
Interesting to follow Dave.

As of last week, I don't believe I have any brood in my established colonies.  Well, at least I didn't dig deep.  I just didn't want to chill them if they were present.  But, you are right.  I would really like to know if there is a queen in that log.  I am sure there is but it's been too cold for them to fly away if there isn't.

I have a third bee tree waiting on me.  I am going to extract it on the spot though.  Just as soon as the weather warms a bit more.

Cut this one open when I got home from the cutting out the Prodigious Oak Tree.  I was disappointed with finding nothing but a couple handful of bees and not evidence of a queen whatsoever.  I was curious about the dead pile of bees you can see in the photo below.  It looked like bees had cleaned house and placed them there which gave me hopes of a viable colony.  I put them in a nuc box and placed them below the nuc of bees from the oak tree.  I know there is eggs in the oak tree nuc and possibly the queen.  I will shake the bees from the orange nuc into the blue oak tree nuc today if they haven't already migrated over.  Win some, lose some.  But, the season is not really even started yet.  So, lots of fun still to come.  I figure all this recent activity is like appetizers.... :D

Three minutes of the video are of the bees close up in the log.  It may be boring to some but it's a neat view of the bees.
