Do it SJ..  Mix a drink, take the most comfy chair you have, and go sit a few feet and to one side of the entrance..  Just sit, and watch, and enjoy that drink..   One of the MOST relaxing things I know of to do!
My wife is slowly getting over her EEEEEEEEEE sounds and flapping her arms as she runs when the bees get near her. She actually came out and sat with me last weekend. There is a "little" hope for her yet!
Drinking RUM before noon makes you a PIRATE not an alcoholic!

Good lesson learned. Don't go into hives at dusk. In the middle day when the foragers are out gathering nectar and pollen, the bees in the hive are occupied transferring the nectar and the hive population can be 25% less.

Had a few more firsts on Sunday. Tried on my new bee suit for the first time, did my first inspection (no way I was waiting another second!), and spotted my first queen cells. The one hive seemed to be doing very well and had begun drawing out three frames of comb. The other hive did not seem to have nearly as many bees, less pollen & nectar, no new comb drawn, and had capped and uncapped queen cells. So I had my first panic session, and then my first management decision.: I'm sitting back and letting them be bees. But just in case, I have set out some swarm traps in case they swarm (and decide to actually go where I want them to).

I have noticed more bees coming and going from the weaker hive in the last two days, so I'm hoping that means they are content.
